Pakistan's national airline concludes month-long post-Hajj flight operation
KARACHI: Pakistan's national flag carrier announced concluding its month-long post-Hajj flight operation on Thursday, saying it had repatriated 41,500 pilgrims since June 10 from Saudi Arabia. Pakistan concluded its 33-day pre-Hajj flight operation in May, transporting more than 115,000 pilgrims to Saudi Arabia under both the government and private schemes for the annual Islamic pilgrimage. The Pakistan International Airline (PIA) began its post-Hajj flight operation on June 10. The final post-Hajj flight operated by PIA arrived in Islamabad from Madinah at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, the national airline's spokesperson said in a statement. 'In total, over 41,500 pilgrims were repatriated to Pakistan via 147 flights operated by PIA,' the spokesperson said. 'PIA maintained an on-time departure rate of over 90 percent for its Hajj flights.' The airline said its post-Hajj operation was conducted from Pakistan's Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Quetta, Multan and Peshawar cities. The airline used its Boeing 777 and Airbus A320 aircraft for the operation. 'Pilgrims expressed satisfaction with the arrangements made by PIA,' the airline's spokesperson said. Pakistan has already started the registration process for Hajj 2026, with over 313,000 individuals completing the process. Intending pilgrims can register for the annual Islamic pilgrimage next year through the religion ministry's online portal and 15 designated banks. Pakistan has extended the deadline to register for Hajj 2026 till July 11.

PIA's first special flight brings 107 stranded Pakistanis from Iran to Islamabad
Pakistan International Airline's (PIA) first special flight carrying 107 stranded Pakistanis from Iran arrived in Islamabad from Ashgabat on late Tuesday night. In a press release, PIA said that due to the closure of Iranian airspace, Pakistani citizens present in Iran reached the city of Ashgabat in Turkmenistan via land routes. The special flight of PIA was dispatched on the instructions of the government and Pakistani embassies in Iran and Turkmenistan played a key role in this entire process, said the national airline. 'In this difficult time, the national airline providing its services in the interest of the nation is a continuation of our decades-long tradition,' said the PIA. Amid rising tensions following Israeli air strikes, the government has issued a temporary travel advisory, urging citizens to avoid travel to Iran and Iraq. The Foreign Office advised all Pakistani pilgrims to reconsider their travel plans to both countries due to the evolving security environment. Officials emphasized that the government is closely monitoring the situation and remains committed to the protection and well-being of its citizens. On June 16, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said Pakistan had evacuated 450 pilgrims from Iran and was working to assist others still stranded. He added that the Pakistani Embassy in Iraq is actively engaged with pilgrims stranded there due to the closure of airspace. 'Measures are being taken to ensure their safety and arrange possible evacuation,' Dar assured.

Five were travel-related, and three were from close contacts or community spread. Last year, the agency confirmed three cases. Cases in Peel are not known to be connected to the current multi-jurisdictional measles outbreak in Ontario, according to the Peel Public Health release. Peel Public Health advises anyone who was at any of the exposure sites during the times listed to check their immunization record to confirm they are up to date with vaccinations. Anyone experiencing symptoms should contact their health provider and stay home from work or school. Anyone who is pregnant, has a weakened immune system, or has an infant under the age of one, should contact their local public health unit right away. Symptoms can include fever, runny nose, cough, red eyes, a red rash that begins on the face and spreads down the body and small blue-white spots that can appear on the inside of the mouth and throat. They usually begin seven to 21 days after infection. There have been nearly 1,800 measles cases reported in Ontario since October, when a measles outbreak began across Canada. The disease is deemed eliminated in Canada by the World Health Organization, but the country is now at risk of losing that status.
