BSP to bank on ‘janata ka gathbandhan' to revive fortunes in 2027 UP elections

Lucknow: In the 2027 UP assembly elections, the Bahujan Samaj Party 's antithesis to political 'gathbandhan' (alliance)" will be 'janata ka gathbandhan' (alliance of people). This is the idea with which the party wants to make a comeback to power, 20 years after it formed a majority govt in UP in 2007. To make it happen, the party has started applying strategies it adopted in 2007. The basic activity was mobilising people from 'sarv samaj' (every caste and community) at the booth level and making them aware of the party's plans for growth and development. "We have started doing it again. We are informing people from various castes and communities about what all 'Behenji' after BSP formed the govt. We are also informing people about the constant onslaught being made by the Congress and the BJP on the constitutional provisions for SCs and backwards," said UP BSP president Vishwanath Pal. "The idea is to unite people from various backgrounds at the booth level against the propaganda of opposition parties. BSP plans to win by riding on 'janata ka gathbandhan'," he said. In the 2022 assembly elections, BSP won only one seat in UP (Rasra in Ballia) and polled over 12.8% of votes. The 2024 Lok Sabha elections did not do any good to the party's dropping political stakes in UP. It lost all the 10 seats won in 2019, and the vote share shrank to 9.4% from 19.4% in 2019. To tighten its grip on voters at the ground level, the party has taken to micro-planning and has started organising 'chaupals' and 'baithaks' at every booth in villages, in which senior and local functionaries are interacting with the people. Since booth is the micro-unit of electoral setup, BSP has pinned its hopes there. 'Chaupals' and 'baithaks' at the booth level may also not require local villagers to commute to some spot away from their homes to listen to party workers. "It is almost like a door-to-door meeting where maximum voters can be mobilised," said Pal.

UN 'blocking aid', Israel claims amid worsening Gaza hunger crisis

UNITED NATIONS, United States: Israel accused the United Nations Wednesday of seeking to "block" Gaza aid distribution, as the global body said it was doing its utmost to gather the limited assistance greenlighted by Israel's authorities. The humanitarian situation in Gaza, where Israel has imposed a two-month aid blockade, is dire, with food security experts saying starvation is looming for one in five people. "While the UN spreads panic and makes declarations detached from reality, the state of Israel is steadily facilitating the entry of aid into Gaza," Israel's United Nations Ambassador Danny Danon told the Security Council. He said the assistance was entering by trucks – under limited authorisation by Israel at the Kerem Shalom crossing since last week following the blockade – and via a "new distribution mechanism developed in coordination with the US and key international partners." Danon was referring to the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a private, US-backed aid group that has established its own distribution system, one the United Nations considers contrary to its humanitarian principles. A chaotic distribution of aid at a GHF centre Tuesday left 47 people wounded. Israel's ambassador blamed Hamas for the tumult, saying the Palestinian group set up roadblocks and checkpoints to block access to the distribution centre. He accused the UN of "trying to block" the aid. The United Nations "is using threats, intimidation and retaliation against NGOs that choose to participate in the new humanitarian mechanism," Danon added. Danon specifically accused the United Nations of having removed these nongovernmental organisations from a database listing groups working in Gaza, an accusation rejected by the UN. "There are no differences between the current list and the one from before the launch of the GHF," Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, told AFP. But the UN reiterated its opposition to coordinating with GHF. "We will not participate in operations that do not meet our humanitarian principles," insisted Dujarric. He also said the UN was doing all it could to gather the aid arriving through Kerem Shalom. Since last week 800 truckloads were approved by Israel but fewer than 500 made it into Gaza, according to Dujarric. "We and our partners could collect just over 200 of them, limited by insecurity and restricted access," he said. "If we're not able to pick up those goods, I can tell you one thing, it is not for lack of trying." Danon had said "more than 400 trucks" full of aid were already on the Gaza side of the crossing and that Israel had provided "safe routes" for the distribution. "But the UN did not show up," the Israeli envoy said. "Put your ego aside, pick up the aid and do your job." Israeli military operations in Gaza have killed at least 54,804 people, mostly civilians, according to the health ministry there. The UN considers the figures reliable. The punishing offensive has reduced much of the Palestinian territory to rubble – including hospitals, schools and other basic infrastructure – and resulted in the displacement of almost all of its roughly two million people. Israel launched its operations in response to the Oct 7, 2023, attack by Hamas, which killed 1,218 people, according to an AFP tally based on official figures.--AFP

JSR hosps ready to handle Covid: East S'bhum civil surgeon

1 2 Jamshedpur: The city is equipped to handle any situation arising due to the spread of Covid-19 virus, said East Singhbhum district civil surgeon Dr Sahir Pal. Dr Pal said, "We are in a wait-and-watch situation, waiting for formal guidelines and advisory from govt. The RT-PCR laboratory at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital can be made operational within short notice. " Earlier, during the first wave of Covid outbreak, laboratory samples collected for RT-PCR testing had to be sent to West Bengal or Odisha, which delayed the treatment process. Now, Jharkhand is has its own laboratories. Dr Pal added, "Health officials can prepare isolation wards for Covid positive patients in short notice. There is no dearth of oxygen as most govt and private hospitals have manufacturing plants." Dr Amit Trivedi, a pulmonologist, said, "There is no need to worry as experts say that the virus is a mild variant but people must not be complacent. They must follow the precautions." "Govt must keep a watch on the data of Covid patients. This will help authorities to strategise advisory to contain the virus," he added. Dr Trivedi said, "Kolkata has logged 11 cases. Every day, around 50,000 people shuttle between the two cities for various purposes. So being careful from early days will help to check the spread. As schools are closed for summer vacation, children are safe. Testing of people with Covid symptoms must be started by govt as soon as possible as it is one of the key factors to check the spread of the virus."

Can rename Beadon St if patriot kin apply: KMC

Kolkata: The Bengal govt will consider a request by the family of eminent jurist Radhabinod Pal to rename Beadon Street in his name. Pal's grandson, Sudhi Binod Pal, in a social media post, mentioned that the Bengal govt has already allocated a "huge grant" to the National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) in Kolkata to organise a conclave and dedicate a chair in his name. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He also urged the Bengal govt, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, and Trinamool Congress National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee to take up an "unfulfilled request" to rename either Beadon Street or any other important street in north Kolkata after Justice Pal. The Bengal govt earlier gave a Rs 1-crore grant to NUJS to honour Pal. Abhishek paid his tributes to Pal's memorial in Tokyo on Friday. Sources said, Banerjee has indicated he will take this up with the Bengal govt and KMC upon his return to Kolkata. A jurist from Calcutta High Court, Pal was part of the International Military Tribunal for the Far East conducted by the Allies for the atrocities committed by the Japanese. He was the only judge to give a dissenting vote against the tribunal's verdict, insisting all defendants were not guilty. He is extremely revered in Japan, with the Yasukuni Shrine and the Kyoto Ryozen Gokoku Shrine having monuments dedicated to Pal. Pal, who graduated from Presidency and Calcutta University, was a Calcutta High Court judge and also the Calcutta University vice-chancellor. Beadon Street was named after Sir Cecil Beadon, the Lieutenant-Governor of Bengal from 1862 to 1867. It was during his tenure that the Calcutta High Court was established. This street has already been officially renamed Abhedananda Sarani after Swami Abhedananda, a direct disciple of Sri Ramakrishna.

First Indian woman scaled Mt Everest Bachendri Pal's name was written in golden letters in history on May 23, 1984, after she scaled the highest peak in the world , Mount Everest. Pal, born in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district, had been drawn to the mountains from a young age. As she expressed her desire to become a professional mountaineer, she encountered stiff opposition from her family and relatives. But, this changed when she soon found success in her chosen field. Having successfully climbed a number of smaller peaks, she was selected to join India's inaugural mixed-gender team for a Mount Everest expedition . Bachendri Pal wanted to become a mountaineer from a young age. File image/X Pal's ascent was undertaken as part of India's fourth Everest expedition, commanded by Brigadier DK Khullar. The expedition encountered significant challenges, including an avalanche on the Lhotse glacier that resulted in injuries to several team members. Undeterred by these obstacles, Pal continued her climb, successfully reaching the summit on May 23, 1984, the day before her 30th birthday. Following her groundbreaking ascent, Pal dedicated herself to promoting adventure sports among women. She subsequently led numerous expeditions, notably an all-women's team to Everest in 1993 and orchestrated various rafting and trekking missions throughout the Himalayas. Her unwavering commitment to service was also demonstrated by her disaster relief work, especially during the 2013 North India floods. Police killed Bonnie and Clyde Two notorious criminals , namely Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were shot dead by Texas and Louisiana state police on this day in 1934. The two met when Bonnie was 19 years old and her husband was serving time in jail for murder. Shortly after their meeting, Barrow was imprisoned for robbery. Parker visited him daily and smuggled a gun into prison for his escape, though he was soon caught in Ohio and returned to jail. Upon Barrow's parole in 1932, he immediately reconnected with Parker, and they began their life of crime together. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Throughout the next two years, the couple along with other accomplices including Barrow's childhood friend Raymond Hamilton, WD Jones, Henry Methvin, Barrow's brother Buck and his wife Blanche, created havoc in Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, New Mexico and Louisiana. The bullet-riddled automobile in which the bandits, Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker were trapped, shot and killed on a Louisiana road is seen May 24, 1934. As Bonnie and Clyde approached the scene in their stolen 1934 Ford V-8, the posse opened fire, unleashing a barrage of bullets. The couple succumbed instantly, with reports indicating that approximately 130 rounds were discharged, resulting in their bodies being extensively perforated. The deaths of Bonnie and Clyde marked the end of their infamous crime spree during the Great Depression era, which had captured the attention of the American public.
