Police to take action after schoolgirl falls from moving bus
The State Police Chief has directed action in connection with the incident in which a schoolgirl fell from a moving bus. The directive came following a complaint filed by Eby J. Jose, Chairman of the Mahatma Gandhi National Foundation, Pala. In his complaint, Mr. Jose had demanded that the permit of the bus involved in the incident be cancelled and licences of both driver and conductor revoked. He also pointed out that the bus door was open at the time of the accident and that there was a serious lapse in safety measures. The incident took place around 4 p.m. on Friday (July 11) at the Anithottam bus stop on the Kanjirappally–Erumeli road. CCTV footage from a nearby shop showed the girl falling from the moving bus and the bus continuing without stopping. The video has since gone viral on social media. The student fell from a private bus named Vazhayil, operating on the Erattupetta–Kanjirappally route. The victim was a Class 7 student at Kanjirappally.

Haddad Maia downs Kvitova on opening day of new Queen's Club Championships
Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia came from a set down to beat former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova and reach the second round of the new WTA 500 event at Queen's Club on Monday. After a 52-year gap since the last top-tier women's event was held at the London grasscourt club, it was fitting that twice Wimbledon winner Kvitova opened proceedings on a court named after former British Wimbledon champion Andy Murray. After an impressive start on the pristine centre court lawn in front of a sizeable crowd, however, the Czech was unable to hold off her younger opponent who prevailed 2-6 6-4 6-4. Kvitova, who won her titles at the All England Club in 2011 and 2014, made her comeback from a 17-month maternity break in February and gained entry to the tournament via a protected ranking. After holding serve in a marathon fifth game, the 35-year-old surged on to win the opening set and looked on course for only her second victory since returning. The rust was apparent though as world number 23 Haddad Maia worked her way back into the match and claimed the win. After levelling the match she got an early break in the deciding set and that proved decisive as she sealed a clash against American third seed Emma Navarro. 'For sure (Petra) is won of the best players on this surface and it's a privilege to be here,' Haddad Maia said. German qualifier Tatjana Maria also made it through as she beat former US Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez 7-6 6-2. Strycova to replace Pala as Czech Billie Jean King Cup team captain: Two-time Wimbledon doubles champion Barbora Strycova will take over as captain of the Czech Billie Jean King Cup team from Petr Pala, the national tennis federation confirmed on Monday. Pala took the helm in 2008 and led the Czechs to six Fed Cup victories in 2011-2018, leaning on the likes of Kvitova, Lucie Safarova, Karolina Pliskova and Strycova herself. The Czechs have been less impressive since the women's team competition changed to the Billie Jean King Cup in 2020, also because of a generational shift. 'I have realised the girls are younger and younger and I'm not getting any younger with them, it's rather the contrary,' Pala, 49, told Czech media on Monday. Agencies

Strycova to replace Pala as Czech Billie Jean King Cup team captain
Pala took the helm in 2008 and led the Czechs to six Fed Cup victories in 2011-2018, leaning on the likes of Petra Kvitova, Lucie Safarova, Karolina Pliskova and Strycova herself. The Czechs have been less impressive since the women's team competition changed to the Billie Jean King Cup in 2020, also because of a generational shift. "I have realised the girls are younger and younger and I'm not getting any younger with them, it's rather the contrary," Pala, 49, told Czech media on Monday. Pala will remain in charge for November's Billie Jean King Cup play-offs before handing over to Strycova in January 2026. Strycova, 39, who was on five of the six Czech Republic teams that won the Fed Cup, said she was relishing the opportunity. "Playing tennis is quite different from leading the Fed Cup team," said Strycova. "But I know I will give my best and try to lead the girls to another trophy." Strycova retired before giving birth to the first of her two children in 2021, but returned for one last season in 2023. She won the Wimbledon doubles with Taiwan's Hsieh Su-wei in her last year, having also won in 2019. The top-ranked Czech players at the moment are Karolina Muchova (14) and Barbora Krejcikova (17).

Henderson Fire: 300-acre wildfire burns near Pala Casino
Updates: This story has been updated with new information. Crews continued efforts on Saturday to build containment lines around a 300-acre wildfire near the Pala Casino that prompted evacuation orders in some neighborhoods. The Henderson Fire started for unknown reasons shortly after 5:30 p.m. Friday off Henderson Road, north of state Route 76 and east of Interstate 15, according to Cal Fire. The blaze was 15% contained as of Saturday morning. Cal Fire Capt. Mike Cornette said evacuation orders are still in place. 'We've ordered additional aircraft this morning,' he said Saturday, adding the pilots have been helped by improved visibility. There were no reports of structure damage or injuries. The northwest-spreading fire grew to 30 acres by 6:59 p.m. Friday as ground crews and personnel aboard air tankers and water-dropping helicopters worked to subdue the blaze, the state agency reported. The fire grew to 200 acres by 9:57 p.m. Friday, and to 300 acres by Saturday morning, according to Cal Fire. 'Firefighters were able to make progress (overnight) as fire behavior was minimal,' according to a Cal Fire statement Saturday morning. 'A substantial number of extra firefighters and equipment have been requested for (Saturday), as there will be work to fully contain the fire.' An evacuation order was issued for nearby areas, with a temporary evacuation point set up at the Pala Casino parking lot. The South Coast Air Quality Management District issued a wildfire smoke advisory for some areas of western Riverside County on Saturday due to the fire. The advisory was effective until 8 a.m. Sunday in the areas of Murrieta, Temecula, Sage, Aguanga and Anza. The South Coast AQMD said the smoke will most heavily impact areas near and to the northeast of the fire. Particle pollution levels were expected to reach the 'unhealthy for sensitive groups' air quality index category in the affected areas. If the fire remains active, the South Coast AQMD said the particle pollution levels could reach the 'unhealthy' air quality index category by Saturday night and early Sunday morning. Conditions may change quickly, depending on fire activity and weather, the South Coast AQMD announced. This is a developing story and will be updated.
