Evan Funke's New Hollywood Lounge Goes Big on Roman Street Food

A new Roman-inspired cocktail lounge from acclaimed chef Evan Funke and Giancarlo Pagani, the managing partner of Mother Wolf Group, is headed to Hollywood. Bar Avoja opens in the short-lived former Mars cocktail bar space, tucked behind Mother Wolf, on May 30. Mars first opened in January 2024 with a $5,000 a year membership that came with a personal spirits locker, priority seating, and invitations to special events; the bar closed in April 2025. At Bar Avoja, Funke will prepare a menu inspired by handheld Roman street food, alongside folded and thin-crust pizza and cocktails. A frittatina di carbonara, a pasta stuffed fritter, is filled with spaghetti swirled with guanciale, black pepper, and egg, or eggplant, mozzarella di bufala, and ricotta salata. A fried arancini, a popular street food in the Eternal City, draws inspiration from cacio e pepe, with crema di pecorino romano and black pepper. At Bar Avoja, Funke will also prepare wood-fired pies. The Portafoglio folded to resemble a pocket, is topped with oxtail meatballs, braised greens, and fonduta di pecorino; the Wolfgang with smoked salmon, herb cream, and trout roe; and the Palermo with sugo di cipolla (onion sauce), caciocavallo, wild oregano, and sauteed bread crumbs. Funke's signature Palermo-inspired focaccia, sfincione all'aglione, will also be on the menu. Gelato and cannoli with ricotta and Santa Barbara pistachios will be available for dessert. Cocktails are made to pair with Funke's cooking, like the Morso Di Vita with Grey Goose, Chinola passion fruit, tomato, basil, and lemon, as well as the Santa Infuocata, mixing Malfy gin, Meyer lemon honey, and Olio Santo olive oil. Alongside cocktails, Bar Avoja will also serve wine and mocktails. Bar Avoja retains elements of the luxe Mars interior, like the intimate red leather seating and an accent wall with wire cages displaying bottles of liquor. Small glass tabletop lamps cast a gentle line downward onto dark wood tables, with strips of metal dividing the top into quarters. It's a venue that's easy to settle into for a few hours, catching up with friends over a bottle of wine and bites from Funke. The bar will be open Thursday to Saturday, by reservation only. For fans of Funke's cooking at Mother Wolf and his eponymous restaurant, Funke, the arrival of Bar Avoja offers an enticing new upscale cocktail option in the neighborhood that's guaranteed to have some top-notch food. Bar Avoja will open at 1545 Wilcox Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90028 on May 30 with hours on Thursday to Saturday, from 6 p.m. until late. Reservations are required and available on Resy . Look inside: Superbly designed house and mews with unparalleled views over Killiney Bay for €7.25m

Houses on Killiney Hill Road in Killiney, Co Dublin, have some of the best sea views in the country – but some capture them better than others. When the owners of Palermo bought their two-storey-over-garden-level house on an acre of rolling lawn overlooking Killiney Bay in 2019, they began a complete renovation, led by architect Karen Brownlee and builder Sean Regan. Their aim of maximising sea views was achieved by building a balcony that spans the width of the house at the back, leading down via a wide spiral staircase to a terrace with two seating areas below it that open off garden-level rooms. Halfway down the rolling lawn, another terrace with built-in seating captures views of Bray Head and the Sugar Loaf across an expanse of sea glittering in bright May sunshine. Palermo is one of many Victorian houses in the area named after places in Italy – Padua and Montebello are farther down the road. It was built in 1848 by the Hone family, whose members included the artist Nathaniel Hone and WB Yeats's biographer Joseph Hone. Joseph lived here until the 1920s, and the letter H is etched into the metal weathervane on the roof of a separate mews house. The late antiques dealer Louis O'Sullivan and his wife, Finola, lived in Palermo for more than 40 years before putting the house up for sale in 2017 with a €4 million asking price. It was bought by the current owners in 2019 for €2.825 million, according to the Property Price Register. Entrance Entrance hall Hallway Drawingroom Kitchen Diningroom Family room Study Main bedroom Bathroom In the past six years they have undertaken substantial renovations on both the house and the mews, resulting in properties that mix period details with modern comforts – lots of storage, underfloor heating in the basement – and vivid contemporary decor. One of the bathrooms, for example, has graffiti-design shower tiles, and the kitchen has a beautiful green waterfall island unit. READ MORE The 595sq m (6,400sq ft) property, including the main house and the mews, is for sale for €7.25 million. The 429sq m (4,604sq ft) main house has a C2 Ber rating and is for sale by itself for €5.95 million. The A-rated 167sq m (1,796sq ft) three-bedroom mews, currently rented for €6,200 a month, may or may not be sold separately. The tenant will be vacating the mews shortly, the agent says. Why move after doing all that work? The couple came here from London with two children and now want to move closer to their children's secondary school. They also enjoy home renovation – it's his fourth or fifth, says one of the owners. The entrance to Palermo is roughly a third of the way down winding Killiney Hill from the Druid's Chair pub on the left, with a newly widened and recessed entrance that makes it easier to access. The front door opens at the side of the house into a tiled porch leading into a hall with a new engineered oak parquet floor and original ceiling cornicing. A Waterford Crystal chandelier – one of many in the house – hangs from the ceiling. A stained-glass window at the far end of the hall matches one in the landing above and a cosy study opens to the right, and next to it is a diningroom with striking forest-effect wallpaper, with a bar concealed in one wall. Both have original timber floors. Garden Sea views from garden Commanding views The main rooms, however, are the drawingroom and kitchen across the hall, both with commanding views of the sea. The large drawingroom has a deep bay window with three tall sash windows. Painted a soft grey/green, the room has a white marble fireplace, chandelier, ceiling cornicing and, most interestingly, partial wallpaper on two walls. The owners think this is hand-painted de Gournay wallpaper, with delicate trees on a yellow background, that may have been in Palermo even before the O'Sullivan family lived there. A door in the corner of the room opens into the streamlined Rhatigan & Hick kitchen/breakfastroom that barely looks like a kitchen: just about everything is concealed in floor-to-ceiling units with doors that fold back next to a large island. This has a sink, integrated dishwasher and seating, and a green waterfall quartzite top. Most importantly, two very tall bay sash windows and glazed double doors opening on to the balcony enjoy the same sea views as the drawingroom. A door opens from the kitchen back into the hall, at the very end of which is a downstairs toilet with vivid green jungle-like wallpaper. Mews house Mews livingroom Mews kitchen A staircase with a striking striped red, grey and orange carpet and a glass balustrade lead to the garden level. The rooms here are timber-floored and have underfloor heating: a large study at one end opens on to the terrace outside, as does the family room – which has a wood-burning stove – at the other end of the hall. There's a gym room in between that could be another bedroom. A bathroom next to the family room has a shower with jazzy black and green tiles. There's a wine cellar through an arch in the old brick coal cellar, and the large utility room has a Belfast sink and lots of storage cupboards. Upstairs, on the first floor, the main bedroom enjoys the same views as the kitchen and breakfastroom directly below it. A floor-to-ceiling built-in wardrobe curves around one corner of the room, which has a marble fireplace and a stained timber floor. Three tall sash windows with working shutters in a shallow bay are uncurtained (but have fitted blackout blinds): they have probably the best sea views in the house, from Bray Head to Howth. The en suite has a pink-tiled shower and a sink with a marble surround. There are three other double bedrooms at this level, three with en suites, all with built-in wardrobes. One is fitted as study, another has a ladder leading up to a hidden mezzanine, much loved by their son, says one of the owners. Its en suite has graffiti tiles from Design Emporium. Their daughter's room is dual-aspect, with one tall window looking out to sea; the timber floor is painted white, and a hammock-style swing hangs from the ceiling. A toilet off the landing has flamingo wallpaper; a family bathroom on the first floor return has a shower, oval bath and tiled floor. Outside, two gravelled terraces are sheltered beneath the main balcony: they look down over a rolling lawn with a magnolia tree at its centre near the sunken terrace, all sheltered by high hedges. A trampoline built into the lawn in this very family-friendly house will remain. Paths on both sides of the lawn lead around it; a gate near the bottom opens on to Strathmore Road, from where it's a reasonably short walk (past Bono's house) to Killiney beach and Killiney Dart station. The three/four-bedroom A-rated L-shaped mews is completely private, with high stone walls around a large courtyard. The livingroom is timber-floored, like all the rooms downstairs in this two-storey mews; the kitchen/diningroom has quartz-topped units, a peninsula with seating and double doors opening into the courtyard. A TV room has a wide arched window looking into the courtyard; a yellow spiral staircase leads to a bedroom upstairs. The main bedroom, over the livingroom, has a few steps down into a space with a wide picture window that offers a slice of Palermo's view of the sea. There are a number of other outbuildings beside the main house that could be converted by new owners.

Liam Payne's bereaved ex-girlfriend Kate Cassidy reveals poignant reminder of the tragic star after shares of her emotional social media tribute mirror their 'angel number'

The former girlfriend of tragic One Direction star Liam Payne was given another poignant reminder of his passing on Monday. Payne suffered fatal head injuries after falling from a third floor balcony at the CasaSur hotel in upscale Palermo, Buenos Aires on October 16, 2024. Seven months on from that fateful day in the Argentine capital, the singer's bereaved girlfriend Kate Cassidy discovered a previous social media tribute to the singer, who was just 31 at the time of his death, had been shared 4,444 times. Uncannily, it is remarkably similar to the 4:44 figure adopted by Payne and Cassidy as their 'angel number' prior to his sudden death. Drawing attention to her shares and their likeness to the angel number on Instagram, Cassidy, 26, wrote: 'Hi Liam.' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the Daily Mail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. The mystical figure has several hidden meanings behind it and is considered an angel number in numerology. Angel numbers are repeating sequences of digits, normally in sets of three or four, and they are believed to hold spiritual guidance. While 333 symbolises growth and 555 represents change, 444 has its own unique meaning behind it. In numerology, 444 is a sign that the 'angels are with you' and are 'there to guide you step by step'. The way the figures are formed means they represent stability and a reassurance that you are not alone. Numerology expert Sunny Dawn Johnston told Glamour: 'When you see these numbers, know deep within that the angels are speaking to you, guiding and supporting you. 'It's a blessing to be in such direct communication with the divine.' Cassidy had originally flown with Payne to Buenos Aires while he renewed his visa and watched his former One Direction bandmate Niall Horan's concert in the city on October 4. However, the late singer stayed on in the Argentinian capital after she flew home on October 14. He tragically died two days later after falling from his hotel balcony while under the influence of class-A drugs and alcohol. Following his death, Cassidy added '444' to her emotional tribute to her 'angel' boyfriend and shared a snap of a note whre Payne had written the numbers. It showed the former One Direction band-member's fascination with 'angel numbers' and 'manifesting'. Cassidy revealed that she and Payne had been 'manifesting their lives together' - a longing heavily associated with the number she signed off her tribute post with, '444'. She told her followers that she had been at a 'complete loss' following the tragedy and that 'nothing about the past few days had felt real'. The American influencer then posted the sequence '444' in the bottom right-hand corner of the tribute next to a red heart emoji. TJ Higgs revealed the meaning behind the sequence, saying: 'The angel number 444 signifies protection, encouragement, and support from the spiritual realm. 'Seeing this number repeatedly suggest that you are on the right path and that your angels are surrounding you, offering their guidance.' Cassidy added an explanation of the '444 angel number sequence on her Instagram, saying it 'reminds you that your angels are always there to support you' She added: 'Many people find comfort in angel numbers during difficult periods, as they can symbolise hope and reassurance. For instance, seeing 444 may remind individuals that they are not alone, and that support is available. 'By interpreting these numbers as messages of love and guidance, individuals may feel a sense of connection to something greater, aiding in their healing process. 'When Liam Payne wrote his note to his girlfriend Kate, with the significance of angel numbers 444, I genuinely believe he was fully aware of the love and support surrounding him. 'He understood that he had people in his life who made him feel, loved cherished, valued, and important.'

Delta Air Lines, United Airlines Launch Direct Service to Sicily Before Memorial Day

Memorial Day weekend is here, and while the holiday is all about honoring those who lost their lives serving this country, many use this weekend as a time to make that first summer trip. More than 45 millions Americans are expected to travel over the holiday weekend, according to AAA, which is roughly 1.4 million more compared to 2024. Both Delta Air Lines and United Airlines have reached a big first before Memorial Day. Both airlines launched their first-ever flights to the Mediterranean island of Sicily this week, making it much more convenient for U.S. passengers to make a trip out to the Italian area. United started its new direct service between Newark Liberty International Airport and Palermo Airport on May 21. The flight schedule will give travelers the chance to take the route three times per week on Boeing 767-400 aircraft through Sept. 24. Also on May 21, Delta launched its first flight between New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport and Catania–Fontanarossa Airport, on the eastern coast of Sicily, which will have flights available for passengers daily on the Boeing 767-300 aircraft through Oct. 24. While both of these routes are direct to Sicily, the biggest difference is that they provide travel to two separate airports located on different ends of the island. Another difference is that United's services uses a Boeing 767-400 aircraft, while Delta's employs a Boeing 767-300. 'Catania will be the fifth Italian city served by Delta from the U.S., along with Rome, Milan, Venice, and Naples," Matteo Curcio, Delta's senior vice president for Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and India said in a statement. "Sicily is a highly sought-after destination and many Italian Americans have strong bonds with this wonderful Italian region." Curcio added, "We are convinced that our service will benefit the region's economy with regards to incoming tourism, as well as offering great connectivity to the US for Sicilians."Delta Air Lines, United Airlines Launch Direct Service to Sicily Before Memorial Day first appeared on Men's Journal on May 25, 2025

The gorgeous city crowned cheapest for Aperol Spritz in Europe - and where to find the famous 84p drink

Nothing screams summer quite like sipping a citrusy Aperol Spritz under the sun - and new research reveals exactly where in Europe you can enjoy as many as you want without burning a hole in your wallet. Dubbed the 'sunset cocktail' for its vibrant orange hue, the drink has seen global sales quintuple since 2015. In the UK, it's now officially the nation's favourite cocktail, with over 183,000 monthly Google searches and over 1.4 billion views on TikTok 's #aperolspritz hashtag. Meanwhile in Veneto, Italy - the home country of the beloved cocktail - nearly 300,000 Spritzes are consumed in a single day alone. Luckily, for superfans keen to sip without the splurge this summer, the best and cheapest Aperol Spritz across 39 of Europe's most popular holiday hotspots have been revealed. And it's Naples that has been named the best-value European city for an Aperol, with the average price coming in at just £1.54 (€2.00). It's a fitting honour for the southern Italian city, considering Italy is the birthplace of the popular drink. At Cammarota Spritz, a no-frills Aperol haven, fans can order one for as little as €1 - the equivalent of 84p - while Spritzerò, another Naples hotspot, keeps it at a modest €2.00. Close behind is Palermo, where you can grab a Spritz for just €3.86 (£2.81) on average. According to the experts at eurochange, visitors should head to the bustling Ballarò Market, where they'll find takeaway versions for even less, at just €3. And it's not just southern Italy offering value, as Bulgaria, one of Europe's rising holiday hotspots, also made the top ten list. With the pound holding strong against the Bulgarian lev, cities like Varna and Burgas offer Spritzes for around £3.39 and £3.50, respectively. Meanwhile, in Greece, often associated with high-end tourism, hidden gems like Kefalonia deliver surprising value, with a Spritz costing just €7.16 (£5.49) on average. On the flip side, the most expensive Spritz in Europe isn't in Paris or Zurich - but in Milan, where it averages a staggering €16.66 (£12.81). At the famous Aperol Terrazza, which overlooks the city's iconic Duomo, one cocktail will set you back €20.00 (£15.65), while the price for a Spritz in Rome hovers around €13.83 (£9.99). Montenegro, despite its growing popularity among British holidaymakers, also ranked higher in price. In Budva, a Spritz costs around €8.16 (£6.27) - placing it 19th out of the 39 destinations surveyed. Laura Evans-Fisk, head of digital & engagement at eurochange said: 'The Aperol Spritz has become one of the most popular holiday cocktails in recent years, but all too often holiday-goers can be stung by sky-high drinks prices when they're away. 'That's why we wanted to help travellers by researching where you can find some of the best and cheapest Aperol Spritz. You might be surprised that many of them are in the home country of the drink itself!' Colin McKenzie, drinks expert at Gradient Experience explained why the Aperol Spritz has become so popular in recent years. He said: 'It's the perfect storm of timing, taste, and Instagram. People aren't just buying a drink; they're buying a feeling, a moment in the sun. It's holiday mode in liquid form.'
