MoYAS, Miranda House host International Youth Day with focus on structured volunteerism
NEW DELHI: The ministry of youth affairs and sports (MoYAS), in collaboration with Delhi University's Miranda House, marked International Youth Day 2025 on Tuesday with discussions on strengthening volunteerism and youth leadership in community development. The theme — 'Volunteerism and Youth Leadership (Impact of Volunteering)' — framed the deliberations that brought together students, youth organisations, and UN agency representatives. Department of youth affairs secretary Pallavi Jain Govil underlined the role of 'glocal volunteering' — applying global perspectives to local action — and detailed the scale of the government's Mera Yuva Bharat (MY Bharat) platform, launched in 2023. With over 1.8 crore registered members, the platform is being used to link youth to priority causes in areas such as environment, health, and education, and to support the government's Viksit Bharat @2047 roadmap. UN India resident coordinator and UNICEF Representative Cynthia McCaffrey cited MY Bharat's reported mobilisation of nine million volunteers for activities ranging from climate action to pandemic response. She said volunteer work is a proven means of building youth leadership and resilience. Joint secretary Nitesh Kumar Mishra outlined three focus areas for MoYAS: expanding partnerships with academic institutions, increasing awareness of volunteerism's value among students and faculty, and enabling young people to take up civic leadership roles. Student-led activities included an e-waste collection drive (August 4–11), campus cleanliness and plantation programmes, and a safety audit. Two panel discussions examined global youth action, inclusive governance, and international cooperation in volunteer networks, with participation from UNFPA, UNDP, UN Women and UNICEF. A theatre performance by the Miranda House Dramatics Society addressed youth-led social change. The programme was positioned as part of the Centre's effort to integrate structured volunteerism into national development strategies and to strengthen India's engagement in global youth cooperation frameworks.
