Kesha Originally Thought ‘Tik Tok' Was ‘Too Dumb' Before It Became Her Biggest Hit

The party don't stop for Kesha's biggest hit, 'Tik Tok,' which has remained one of the most popular songs from the late 2000s more than a decade later. But according to the pop star, she originally thought the track was 'too dumb' when she first wrote it. While serving as a guest on The Jennifer Hudson Show Tuesday (May 13), Kesha recalled being blown away by the success of 'Tik Tok' after it dropped in 2009. 'No, oh my god,' she said when asked whether she ever expected it to become such a big hit. 'Which was confusing, because I like to think of myself as a fairly intelligent human being. But it just got dumber and dumber and better and better.' Kesha added, 'When I listened to the final product, I was like, 'This is too dumb.'' Regardless, there was nothing dumb about what the track would do for her career. 'Tik Tok' would launch the California native to superstar status, becoming not just her first solo Billboard Hot 100 entry, but her first No. 1 on the chart. It would also remain in the top spot for nine weeks, her longest run at the chart's summit, and helped Kesha's first album, Animal, debut atop the Billboard 200. Fifteen years later, the musician is gearing up to release her sixth studio album, . (Period), her first LP under her own label, Kesha Records. Her departure from Dr. Luke's Kemosabe Records — the founder of which also produced much of Animal — comes after a yearslong legal battle with Dr. Luke over Kesha's claims that he drugged and raped her in 2005, after which he sued her for defamation while calling the allegations 'false and shocking.' Their ensuing legal battle continued for nine years before the two parties finally reached a settlement in 2023. Of finally getting to release music fully on her own terms, Kesha told Hudson, 'I'm really excited for the world to hear this, because I've been in control of everything.' 'It's been all of my vision, all of my words, a lot of hard work, a lot of joy,' she continued, tearing up. 'Really coming back home to myself and feeling what freedom really looks like, feels like, sounds like.' Watch Kesha's conversation with Hudson below. Here's Why Swifties Are Convinced Taylor Swift Is Going to Announce Something at the 2025 AMAs

All Swiftie eyes will be turned toward the 2025 American Music Awards later this month, as fans are absolutely convinced that Taylor Swift is planning to announce something major at this year's ceremony. There are several reasons for the detective-like fanbase's latest hunch. Two of the biggest ones tie back to the pop superstar's online store, which fans noticed now covertly spells out 'AMAs' via the first letters of each word in a prominent four-option menu: Apparel, Music, Accessories and Sale. More from Billboard Here's How to Vote for the 2025 American Music Awards Twenty One Pilots Fans Jumped Into Veronica Mars Mode After Someone Took Off With One of Josh Dun's Bespoke Drums Palm Tree Festival to Debut in St. Tropez With Headliners A$AP Rocky & Swedish House Mafia Additionally, Swift's site currently has exactly 12 items up for sale at 26% off, which fans have pointed out as two significant numbers. First, the 14-time Grammy winner's last album — the 17-week Billboard 200-topping Tortured Poets Department — was her 11th studio LP, meaning her next project would be her 12th. Second, the date of the 2025 AMAs is May 26. That, of course, isn't all. Taylor Nation recently reshared a fan's post on X about voting for Swift at this year's AMAs (she's nominated in six categories in 2025) and wrote, 'And our town, it looks so sMall from wAy up here.' 'Screamed, 'vote for the chairman' at the night sky!' Swift's team added in the May 6 post. On the surface, those lines appear to be a simple play on a lyric from Swift's track 'thanK you aIMee.' But you also might notice the randomly capitalized letters in the sentence; put them together, and what do they spell? 'AMAs.' With all of that in mind, Swifties are sure the 'Fortnight' singer has something special planned for the 2025 awards. The repetition of the number 12 in her potential Easter eggs has a lot of people thinking that an announcement pertaining to her next proper album is in the cards, but some are holding out hope that she'll actually reveal something about her long-anticipated Reputation or Taylor Swift re-records. 'Her store spelling out AMAS, 12 items on sale for 26% (the amas are on the 26th), TN capitalizing a caption to spell out AMAS…. guys… THESE ARE EASTER EGGS,' one fan wrote on X. Another person added, 'i think this enough reasonable clown material.' If Swift does unveil something album-related at the AMAs, it would be far from the first time she's used an award show for that purpose. It was at the 2022 VMAs that she announced Midnights, and while accepting best pop vocal album for that same LP at the 2024 Grammys, she announced Tortured Poets. The Eras headliner also has a special history with the AMAs in particular. In 2019, she was declared the show's second-ever artist of the decade, performing a medley of her biggest hits before accepting the honor on stage. She's also the most-decorated artist in AMAs history, boasting 40 awards in her collection total. Airing live on Memorial Day, or May 26, the AMAs will be available to stream on Paramount+ in the U.S. The upcoming show comes after Swift was recently spotted out and about with boyfriend Travis Kelce for the first time in months, dining at a Philadelphia restaurant on Mother's Day (May 11) after mostly lying low following the conclusion of the Eras Tour in December. See what Swifties are saying about the possibility of a big AMAs announcement below. Amyl and the Sniffers, Royel Otis Lead Finalists for 2025 AIR Awards

Some of Australia's biggest musical exports are up for high-profile honors at this year's AIR Awards, set to be handed out on July 31 at the Adelaide Town Hall in South Australia. Leading the charge in this year's event are the likes of Royel Otis, who are up for four awards, just one year after being named breakthrough independent artist of the year at the 2024 edition. This year sees them up for the likes of best independent rock album or EP, independent album of the year, and independent marketing team of the year. Royel Otis will be in fine company, sharing the former two categories with both Amyl and the Sniffers and King Stingray. Amyl, meanwhile, are also up for independent song of the year for 'U Should Not Be Doing That,' which recently took out song of the year at the APRA Music Awards last month. Other well-represented artists at this year's ceremony are Emily Wurramara, Confidence Man and Alice Ivy, who are up for four awards each, with the latter pair in contention for best independent dance, electronica or club single and Best Independent Dance or Electronica Album or EP. Acts such as Indigenous hip-hop supergroup 3%, Gut Health, and others are also hoping to take home multiples at the event. 'It's a wonderful opportunity to recognise the work the independent music industry does in providing talented and emerging artists and music businesses with a platform to share their art with a wider audience,' commented South Australian minister for arts, Andrea Michaels MP. Officially known as the Australian Independent Record Awards, the awards were first established in 2006 as an effort to 'recognise, promote, and celebrate the success of Australia's Independent Music sector.' This year also features a new category, with independent mix, studio or mastering engineer of the year set to be handed out at the July ceremony for the first time. Some of Australia's biggest musical exports have been recognized by the AIRs in recent years, including RVG, who took home last year's best independent album for Brain Worms, and Jem Cassar-Daley, whose 'King of Disappointment' was named best independent single/EP. Olivia Rodrigo Reveals Full Lineup For London BST Hyde Park Show

The full lineup for Olivia Rodrigo's headline show at London's BST Hyde Park series has been announced. The huge outdoor gig will take place in the capital on June 27, two days before the pop phenomenon's much-anticipated Glastonbury headline slot. She will be joined by special guests Girl In Red and The Last Dinner Party, who were confirmed for the gig last November. More from Billboard Twenty One Pilots Fans Jumped Into Veronica Mars Mode After Someone Took Off With One of Josh Dun's Bespoke Drums Palm Tree Festival to Debut in St. Tropez With Headliners A$AP Rocky & Swedish House Mafia Kelly Clarkson Doesn't Care What HR Says, She's Totally Open to Comments on Her Weight Loss: 'I Want You to Say 'Damn!' Today (May 13), eight more support acts have been added to the bill: Flowerovlove, Caity Baser, Between Friends, Florence Road, Katie Gregson-Macleod, Ruti, Aziya and Déyyess. Irish band Florence Road came to prominence on TikTok last year, where they shared covers of contemporary pop songs including their takes on Rodrigo's 'Obsessed' and 'Making The Bed.' In April, the four-piece released an acoustic ballad entitled 'Anxiety,' which was produced by Dan Nigro, known for his work with Rodrigo and Chappell Roan. Baser has enjoyed a flurry of activity in recent months. Following the release of her single 'Watch That Girl (She's Gonna Say It),' the Southampton-raised musician has completed a tour of intimate venues across the U.K. and dropped another new track, 'Running From Myself.' Singer-songwriter Gregson-Macleod is eyeing up the release of her Love Me Too Well, I'll Retire Early EP in July, which will arrive via Matt Maltese's Last Recordings On Earth label. Aziya has drip-fed a slew of singles throughout 2025, the most recent being the grungy 'Diamonds,' which dropped in April. The BST Hyde Park shows have a history of supporting emerging acts, platforming newer names in the early stages of their career. Over the past few years, the likes of Sam Fender (Bob Dylan and Neil Young, 2019), The Last Dinner Party (The Rolling Stones, 2022) and Elmiene (SZA, 2024) have performed at the festival before going on to break into the mainstream. The other headliners for BST Hyde Park 2025 are: Zach Bryan (June 28 and 29) Noah Kahan (July 4), Sabrina Carpenter (July 5, 6), Neil Young and The Chrome Hearts (July 11), Stevie Wonder (July 12) and Jeff Lynne's ELO (July 13). Remaining tickets can be found here. Rodrigo unveiled her second LP Guts in 2023, which she has supported with extensive global touring. In April, she performed the largest show of her career to date at a sold-out Estadio GNP Seguros in Mexico City, which holds a capacity of 65,000 fans. Kneecap's First Live Show Since Coachella Set to Go Ahead at London Festival

Irish hip hop act Kneecap will still be headlining Wide Awake Festival 2025 as planned, the festival has announced. It will mark the band's first show since they performed at Coachella last month. The news arrives following a period of intense scrutiny on the West Belfast trio in the weeks after Coachella. At the end of their sets, Kneecap displayed messages on the war in Gaza, writing: 'Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinian people. It is being enabled by the U.S. government who arm and fund Israel despite their war crimes. F–k Israel; free Palestine.' More from Billboard Twenty One Pilots Fans Jumped Into Veronica Mars Mode After Someone Took Off With One of Josh Dun's Bespoke Drums Palm Tree Festival to Debut in St. Tropez With Headliners A$AP Rocky & Swedish House Mafia Kelly Clarkson Doesn't Care What HR Says, She's Totally Open to Comments on Her Weight Loss: 'I Want You to Say 'Damn!' The group went on to face criticism from a number of industry figures including Sharon Osbourne, who called for their U.S. visas to be retracted. A group of politicians, meanwhile, called for Kneecap to be removed from a series of U.K. festival line-ups this summer. Scrutiny continued when counter-terror police in London announced (May 1) an investigation into videos of band members allegedly calling for the death of elected British MPs and shouting 'up Hamas, up Hezbollah.' The group have since gone on to issue a statement to their Instagram account: 'Let us be unequivocal: we do not, and have never, supported Hamas or Hezbollah. We condemn all attacks on civilians, always. It is never okay,' it read in part. Consequently, German headline shows in Hamburg, Cologne and Berlin for this summer have been pulled, alongside previously-announced appearances at Hurricane and Southside Festivals. A night at the Eden Project, Cornwall, was also cancelled last month but has since been replaced with three new dates in the nearby city of Plymouth, south west England. Wide Awake have now shared a statement across their social media platforms confirming Kneecap's headline performance is still slated to go ahead next week (May 23). 'After positive discussions with key stakeholders, Wide Awake Festival can confirm that, as planned, Kneecap will be performing at this year's festival on Friday May 23 at Brockwell Park,' it began. 'Wide Awake has a proud history of supporting the alternative music scene, and we look forward to staging another unforgettable event showcasing the very best emerging and established talent.' The post also featured a lengthy signatory list of artists sharing their support for Kneecap and the 'freedom of expression,' featuring names such as Pulp, Fontaines D.C., Primal Scream, Massive Attack, Self Esteem and Amyl and The Sniffers, among others. Other acts set to perform at Wide Awake, which takes place in Brockwell Park, south London, include English Teacher, CMAT, Peaches, Fat Dog and more. Tickets and the full line-up can be found on the event's official website.
