LANGKAWI: The iconic Langkawi Skybridge, suspended 650 metres above sea level on Gunung Machinchang, is now adorned with 68 Jalur Gemilang flags in celebration of Malaysia's 68th Merdeka Day. The flags, displayed along the 125-metre bridge from Aug 1 to Sept 16, are not only a patriotic gesture but also a striking visual attraction for both local and international visitors. Built in 2003, the Skybridge is among the main highlights for tourists taking the Langkawi SkyCab (Langkawi Cable Car) ride. Panorama Langkawi Sdn Bhd acting chief operating officer Abu Hashim Abd Rahman said the initiative aims to foster a patriotic spirit while enhancing the Merdeka festivities. "This installation also signals to foreign tourists that our nation is in the mood to celebrate its historic day on Aug 31. "Indirectly, it promotes Malaysia globally when photos of the Jalur Gemilang fluttering proudly are shared by tourists on social media," he said when met here today. Hashim said the company plans to make the flag display atop Gunung Machinchang an annual Merdeka tradition.
