Farmer killed in wild elephant attack near Madikeri

Madikeri: A 72-year-old farmer was killed in a wild elephant attack in Madikeri taluk on Wednesday night. Shivappa, a farmer from Chembu village near Sampaje, was killed just outside his house, at around 8:30 pm. He heard unusual noises outside his home and stepped out to investigate, when a wild elephant suddenly attacked him. His screams alerted nearby residents, who rushed to his aid. However, Shivappa had sustained grievous injuries and was lying in a pool of blood in the verandah of his house. His family members transported him to a nearby hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries before receiving any medical assistance, authorities said. State wildlife board member Sanketh Poovaiah visited the victim's family to collect details of the incident. He spoke to forest officials and urged them to to drive the elephants back into the forest immediately. The department officials have assured that compensation will be released at the earliest. Anish and Delvin, residents of Chinnur in Nanjarayapatna, were going to the field to play on Wednesday morning, when a wild elephant suddenly emerged from the coffee estate and attacked their bike, causing serious head injuries to Delvin.
