Farmer killed in wild elephant attack near Madikeri
Madikeri: A 72-year-old farmer was killed in a wild elephant attack in Madikeri taluk on Wednesday night. Shivappa, a farmer from Chembu village near Sampaje, was killed just outside his house, at around 8:30 pm.
He heard unusual noises outside his home and stepped out to investigate, when a wild elephant suddenly attacked him. His screams alerted nearby residents, who rushed to his aid. However, Shivappa had sustained grievous injuries and was lying in a pool of blood in the verandah of his house.
His family members transported him to a nearby hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries before receiving any medical assistance, authorities said.
State wildlife board member Sanketh Poovaiah visited the victim's family to collect details of the incident. He spoke to forest officials and urged them to to drive the elephants back into the forest immediately. The department officials have assured that compensation will be released at the earliest.
Meanwhile, villagers have expressed concerns over increasing conflict with wild elephants and have urged foresters to seal the forest fringes to prevent elephant movement.

Meanwhile, in a different One person was seriously injured after a wild elephant attacked a youth riding a bike in Nanjarayapatna. Anish and Delvin, residents of Chinnur in Nanjarayapatna, were going to the field to play on Wednesday morning, when a wild elephant suddenly emerged from the coffee estate and attacked their bike, causing serious head injuries to Delvin. Anish however, escaped unhurt.
Gram panchayat president Vishwa said that the wild elephant crossed a trench and attacked the bikers. Forest officials visited the spot.
Destroyed crops
In another incident, a wild elephant destroyed agricultural crops in Chettali. The elephant entered the estate of Hosamane Poovaiah and destroyed coffee, black pepper, and banana plantations, resulting in a loss of more than Rs 1 lakh. Poovaiah expressed dissatisfaction over inaction regarding a request for compensation. The wild elephants that have camped in the plantations have created anxiety. Workers are reluctant to come to work.
