PCI chief Devendra Jhajharia to highlight India's para-sports vision at APC General Assembly

New Delhi: The Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) will represent the country at the 2025 Asian Paralympic Committee (APC) Conference, Asian Awards, and General Assembly scheduled to be held from August 10 to 15 in Astana, Kazakhstan. PCI President Devendra Jhajharia and General Secretary Jaywant Hammanavar will be attending the event on behalf of India. This prestigious gathering will bring together representatives from 45 Asian National Paralympic Committees (NPC), along with athletes, delegates, APC Executive Board members, standing committees, international federations, games organising committees, and global sports organisations. With more than 200 attendees expected, the event stands as a cornerstone of para-sports development and governance in Asia. The week-long programme will begin with a two-day conference featuring presentations and workshops on a wide range of topics central to the growth of para-sports. This will be followed by the formal business of the General Assembly, where key decisions, including the approval of the APC strategic plan and financial accounts, will be undertaken. One of the highlights of the gathering will be the Asian Awards, which will recognise the continent's top para-athletes, officials, and performers across seven categories, including Best Male and Female Athletes, Youth Athlete, Team Performance, Exemplary Official, Best Photography, and Outstanding NPC Performance. Ahead of the event, Jhajharia expressed India's commitment to contributing meaningfully to the discussions and to showcasing the country's efforts in para sports. 'The 2025 APC Conference and Assembly is a vital platform not just for collaboration but also for showcasing the work each nation is doing to empower para-athletes. India is at a transformative stage in para sports, and we look forward to sharing our journey, especially our preparations for the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships in New Delhi. "At the Paralympic Committee of India, we are committed to delivering a championship of the highest global standards and to establishing India as a leading host for inclusive sporting events. These efforts reflect our broader mission to make India a central force in the global para sports ecosystem. This conference is also a chance to learn, exchange best practices, and reaffirm our commitment to building a more inclusive sporting future across Asia,' he said. India's presence in Astana will reaffirm its growing leadership in the Asian para sports movement. As the country prepares to host the World Para Athletics Championships this year, it aims to set new benchmarks in inclusion, organisation, and athlete empowerment, furthering its vision of becoming a global hub for para sports.

Sukant Kadam expressed, 'I gave it everything on court, and reaching the final at a Level 1 event is a big boost. Matches like these help me improve, and I'm taking away valuable lessons to refine my game for the Paralympics," as stated in a press release from the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI). In the Men's Singles SH6 category, Paralympic gold medallist Krishna Nagar maintained his consistent form, progressing to the semifinals and earning a hard-fought bronze medal. Krishna Nagar remarked, 'Every match here was a test of focus and endurance. I'm happy to finish on the podium again, and this performance gives me great confidence as we head towards Paris." India's strong performance across multiple categories highlights the depth of talent and preparation among its para shuttlers. Delhi Half Marathon Organisers Remember Fauja Singh Ahead Of October 12 Event

The 20th edition of the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon will be held on October 12 and will start from the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi, the organisers of the event said on Wednesday. The registration for the race categories, including half marathon, Open 10K, Great Delhi Run, Senior Citizens Run and Champions with Disability, will commence on July 17 and will remain open till September 19. The launch event was attended by Delhi's sports minister Ashish Sood and tourism minister Kapil Mishra among others. Vivek Singh, joint Managing Director of Procam International - the organisers of the Delhi Marathon, said Fauja Singh, the iconic marathoner who died at the age of 114 in a road accident on Monday, was a huge inspiration to all. "Fauja Singh ji had come for the Mumbai Marathon in 2016. I met him then. His specialty was that he was extremely disciplined. Whoever met him could not remain without being impressed and inspired by him," Singh said. "His dedication to the marathon was amazing. He maintained it throughout his life. The great double Olympic winner Eliud Kipchoge said, 'Those who are disciplined are truly free.' Fauja ji was completely true to this statement. It is very sad that he died like this." Commenting on the 20th edition of the event, Anil Singh, MD of Procam International, the promoters of the race said: "This 20th year of the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon is deeply emotional for us more than a milestone; it's a celebration of a legacy built step by step, year after year. "What started as a vision to create a world-class sporting event in India has grown into a symbol of resilience, community, and hope. We've witnessed runners turn into role models, streets transform into stories of courage, and a city come alive with purpose." Also part of the event was former India hockey team skipper and current junior men's hockey team coach PR Sreejesh and Paralympic Committee of India chief Devendra Jhajharia.

Paralympic Committee of India director K.R. Satyanarayan elected as SAPSF president

New Delhi [India], July 12 (ANI): In a historic move to strengthen and unify the para sports movement across South Asia, the South Asian Para Sports Federation (SAPSF) was officially formed on Saturday, as per the press release from PCI. The Federation will be led by Satya Babu of India, Director of the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI), who has been elected as President, while Ahmed Mohamed of Maldives, Secretary General of NPC Maldives, will serve as Secretary General. Jaywant Gundu Hammannavar, Secretary General of PCI, has been appointed as Treasurer. Vice Presidents include Thushan Deepal Hearth Lekam Ralalage of Sri Lanka, President of the Sri Lanka Paralympic Committee, and Om Nath Shiwakoti of Nepal, Treasurer of NPC Nepal. Representing the athletes, Rajitha Ampemotti from Sri Lanka has been appointed as Athlete Representative. Expanding the leadership structure, Chencho of NPC Bhutan has been appointed as a Committee Member, Deepa Malik, Padma Shri and Paralympic medallist, has been appointed by default through her position as the Asian Paralympic Committee (APC) Representative. Satyanarayana from NPC India has also been appointed as the Senior Chief Advisor and Manish Rana of NPC India will serve as the Joint Secretary, to SAPSF, in recognition of his pivotal role in shaping the federation's formation and future vision. The formation of SAPSF took place in the presence of official representatives from India, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and the Maldives, marking the beginning of a new chapter in regional collaboration. Devendra Jhajharia, the President of the Paralympic Committee of India, also attended the meeting. The Federation aims to build a structured and united front for para-athletes, focusing on infrastructure development, athlete support systems, resource pooling, and ultimately, the launch of the South Asian Para Games. Expressing his delight on being elected as the inaugural President, Satya Babu said as quoted by the PCI press release, 'It is an honour to be entrusted with this responsibility at such a pivotal moment for para sports in our region.' He further added, 'Our vision is to replicate the spirit of the South Asian Games, but exclusively for Para athletes. This is a major step in creating world-class training and competition platforms across the region. With SAPSF, we aim to unlock new pathways for athletes to compete and grow.' Ahmed Mohamed, Secretary General of SAPSF, stressed the importance of inclusivity and expanded access. 'Many athletes in South Asia have had limited access to international competition. This initiative opens doors for classification, training, and exposure. We are grateful to the Paralympic Committee of India for driving this forward,' Ahmed Mohamed said. Vice President Thushan Ralalage of Sri Lanka emphasised the need for long-term athlete development. 'This isn't just about medals--it's about building an ecosystem that supports para athletes at every level through education, training, and classification programs,' Thushan Ralalage said. Om Nath Shiwakoti of Nepal, also serving as Vice President, spoke about the critical need for shared resources. 'Countries like Nepal lack the infrastructure that India possesses. Through SAPSF, we can bridge that gap and build regional strength by leveraging one another's capacities,' Om Nath Shiwakoti Sonam Karma Tshering, Secretary General of the Bhutan Paralympic Committee, welcomed the move, stating, 'We've never had the chance to truly work together as a region. With SAPSF, we can now create a common event calendar, share knowledge, and help each other rise.' With the establishment of SAPSF, South Asia takes a bold and unified step forward--toward becoming a global leader in para sports. The Federation promises a future where para athletes are empowered by opportunity, united by purpose, and supported by a regional system committed to excellence and equity. (ANI)

Mahabubnagar: Members of the Telangana Para-Athletes Association have hailed the remarkable achievements of Telangana para-athletes who won gold medals at the 7th Indian Open Para Athletics International Championship – 2025, held on July 11 and 12 at Sri Kanteerava Stadium, Bengaluru. In a proud moment for the state, Jeevan Ji Deepti (T20 category) clinched the gold medal in the track event with an impressive timing of 56.63 seconds, while Akira Nandan (T37 category) secured gold by finishing the race in 51.71 seconds. Their determination and outstanding performances stood out on the national stage, earning them applause from sports enthusiasts across Telangana. Adding to the state's representation, Devendra delivered a strong performance in both the javelin and shot put events, showcasing the growing strength of Telangana's para-athletic talent. Congratulating the athletes, Dr. Shekhar, President of the Para Athletics Association of Telangana, and Gadipalli Prashanth, General Secretary, expressed pride in their accomplishments. They reiterated the association's commitment to promoting para-sports and supporting athletes with opportunities and training.
