Shari Redstone Discloses Thyroid Cancer Diagnosis
Paramount Global chair Shari Redstone has disclosed that she underwent surgery for thyroid cancer in May after being diagnosed earlier this year. A spokesperson for Redstone said, 'Shari Redstone was diagnosed with thyroid cancer earlier this spring. While it has been a challenging period, she is maintaining all professional and philanthropic activities throughout her treatment, which is ongoing. She and her family are grateful that her prognosis is excellent.' That agreement was struck in July 2024 but remains in limbo, as it still hasn't been approved by the FCC, led by Trump ally Brendan Carr. She's also dealing with a lawsuit filed by President Trump against the CBS news division over a '60 Minutes' interview with Kamala Harris. Her cancer diagnosis is another difficult wrinkle in the already-tangled situation Redstone has been working to resolve. According to the New York Times, which first reported the story, Redstone said she consulted doctors about two months ago after experiencing fatigue and other symptoms. She had surgery to remove her thyroid gland, but surgeons were unable to remove the cancer cells that had spread to her vocal cords. She continues to be treated with radiation, the spokesperson said. Redstone had shared the news of her diagnosis with David Ellison, the head of Skydance, and with close family members and friends. If and when the Paramount-Skydance deal closes, Redstone will leave the merged company's board. The series follows Danny after he takes a role with Boston PD, where he is partnered with detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green), the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family. This won't be Lawson's first time playing a cop: she is best known for starring as Juliet O'Hara in 'Psych,' which ran on the USA network for eight seasons from 2006 to 2014, as well 'Psych: The Movie' (2017), 'Psych 2: Lassie Come Home' (2020) and 'Psych 3: This Is Gus (2021).' In 2024, she starred in the Hallmark Christmas movie 'Sugarplummed,' and also recently reunited with 'Psych' star Corbin Bernsen in an indie comedy pilot called 'Woodstockers.' Her other credits include a lead role in the 2020 Fox sitcom 'Outmatched' and recurring roles in Seasons 2 and 3 of Netflix's 'The Santa Clarita Diet,' Season 3 of Fox's 'Lethal Weapon,' Seasons 2 and 3 of Netflix's 'The Ranch' and Season 12 of CBS' 'Two and a Half Men.' CBS Studios produces the series in association with Jerry Bruckheimer Television, and the series will be distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution. Paramount Global, With Skydance Deal and Trump Lawsuit Pending, Nominates Three New Board Members for Election at July 2 Annual Meeting
Paramount Global and controlling shareholder Shari Redstone had hoped to close the deal to merge the media company with Skydance Media by this point. But as the deal is still pending FCC approval, and as a potential settlement looms with Donald Trump in his lawsuit against '60 Minutes,' Paramount has set a date for its 2025 annual meeting of stockholders and nominated three new members to its board. More from Variety California Senators Suggest Paramount-Trump Settlement Would Amount to a Bribe and Harm Independent Press Trump Lawyers Claim '60 Minutes' Harris Interview Caused Him 'Mental Anguish,' Argue That the 'First Amendment Is No Shield to News Distortion' in Motion to Deny Paramount Bid to Dismiss Lawsuit Paramount Could Violate Anti-Bribery Law if it Pays to Settle Trump's '60 Minutes' Lawsuit, Senators Claim The Paramount annual meeting is scheduled to be held by live webcast starting at 9 a.m. ET on Wednesday, July 2, 2025. The company has nominated three new directors: Mary Boies, counsel to Boies Schiller Flexner LLP, specializing in antitrust and corporate commercial litigation; Charles E. Ryan, founder and general partner of Almaz Capital; and Roanne Sragow Licht, a former judge and adjunct professor at Boston University and Roger Williams University. The company disclosed the shareholder meeting date and the three directors in its 2025 proxy statement filed Monday with the SEC. The current board members standing for reelection are Redstone, non-executive chair of Paramount Global; Barbara M. Byrne, former vice chairman of investment banking at Barclays; Linda M. Griego, CEO of Griego Enterprises, a business management company; and Susan Schuman, CEO of Kyu Consulting Group. The proposed slate would result in the Paramount board having seven members following the annual meeting in July. Judith McHale, who currently serves on Paramount's board and is chair of the compensation committee, is not standing for re-election at the 2025 meeting. McHale, who is president and CEO of Cane Investments, wanted to step back from her professional commitments across her public board positions, according to sources familiar with her thinking. In June 2024, four then-members of Paramount's board exited as the company stepped up the M&A talks with Skydance, while former CEO Bob Bakish was booted from Paramount (and its board) in April 2024. Then last October, Charles Phillips Jr., former president of Larry Ellison's Oracle, quit the Paramount board of directors. Phillips had led the board's special committee on M&A that ultimately reached the agreement to merge the company with Skydance. If and when the Paramount-Skydance deal closes to form 'Paramount Skydance Corp.,' Redstone is set to exit the merged company's board. Skydance CEO David Ellison, who is the son of Larry Ellison, would assume the role as CEO and chairman of the combined Paramount-Skydance. The company would be controlled by the Ellison family and remain publicly traded.
