olhapur: Gold jewellery valued at Rs50 lakh were stolen from the home of the head of the medicine department at the state-run Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj Government Medical College.
The theft, which occurred at the family's residence in Anant Paradise in New Shahupuri, was discovered by the domestic help on Monday evening. She found the apartment door open and alerted the family. Upon the family's return, the complainant, 57-year-old Anita Paritekar, found the bedroom lock broken, compartments open, and belongings scattered.
Paritekar told police that the jewellery was being saved for her son's marriage.
A complaint has been filed with the Shahupuri police, and the local crime branch is investigating the case.
Santosh Doke, police inspector of Shahupuri Police Station, said, "We are tracing the suspects and soon we will be catching hold of them. There were no functional CCTV cameras inside the building. The doctor told us that the family bought some CCTV cameras some days ago, but due to their busy schedule, they could not install them."
Interestingly, Paritekar found that her silver jewellery items were intact and not stolen, while only the gems and gold ornaments, along with Rs25,000 cash, were taken away.
The couple has a son and a married daughter.
They have a granddaughter, and the couple was planning to save some of their investment in gold for the future of their granddaughter as well.
