ICUs operational in 40 district hospitals, says Uttar Pradesh government

With Intensive Care Units (ICUs) operational in 40 district hospitals across the state, access to advanced medical treatment for critically ill patients at the local level has improved significantly, according to a press statement issued by the state government on Friday. Fully operational ICUs are providing critical services in several hospitals in Lucknow and other districts. (PICTURE FOR REPRESENTATION) Launched nearly 15 months ago, the initiative has enabled more than 2,100 patients to receive timely, life-saving care in their districts, bringing much-needed relief to families who would otherwise be forced to travel to Lucknow or Delhi, the statement added. Earlier, many district hospitals had the physical infrastructure for ICUs, but lacked the trained personnel to operate them effectively. This led to the frequent referral of critical patients to tertiary hospitals in metropolitan areas. To address this gap, the state government introduced a comprehensive training programme to build local ICU capabilities. Principal secretary, health and medical education, Parth Sarthi Sen Sharma stated that the training programme was designed to equip doctors, nurses, and paramedical staff of district hospitals with proficiency in using ventilators and other modern medical technologies. He affirmed that this vision is now bearing fruit. Now, fully operational ICUs are not only providing critical services in several hospitals in Lucknow, including Balrampur Hospital, Civil Hospital, Rani Laxmibai Hospital, Lokbandhu Hospital, and Ram Sagar Mishra Hospital, but also across numerous districts like Barabanki, Ayodhya, Sitapur, Unnao, Kanpur Nagar, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Ambedkar Nagar, Ballia, Azamgarh, Mau, Gorakhpur and Basti. In the western and Bundelkhand regions, district hospitals in Etawah, Banda, Chitrakoot, Agra, Mathura, Firozabad, Aligarh, Bulandshahr, Kannauj, Jhansi, Bareilly, Moradabad, Meerut, Ghaziabad, Muzaffarnagar, and Shamli have also established and operationalized ICU facilities. This expanded network ensures that intensive care services are now within reach for residents across a much broader geographic area, marking a significant leap forward in public health delivery in Uttar Pradesh. 'Critical Care Refresher Manual' released Principal secretary, health and medical education, Partha Sarthi Sen Sharma released the 'Critical Care Refresher Manual.' This comprehensive guide features contributions from 36 eminent experts from medical colleges across Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. Designed as a practical handbook, the manual serves as a reliable reference for healthcare professionals involved in intensive care.

Emergency care meet for docs begins

Lucknow: To improve emergency care in govt hospitals, a four-day training workshop, District Hospital Physician Training (DHPT), began in Lucknow on Thursday with participation of 26 doctors from different hospitals. Following instructions of principal health secretary Partha Sarthi Sen Sharma, the workshop is being conducted by EMRI Green Health Services, which runs the 108 and 102 ambulance services in UP. The training module has been created by EMRI and Stanford School of Medicine, USA. Dr. Kavita Arya, director of Balrampur Hospital, inaugurated the workshop. Doctors are being trained in emergency care during the critical "golden hour"—the time period of first medical intervention before patients are referred to bigger hospitals. TNN

U.P launches drive to curb rising heart attack deaths

In a major initiative aimed at reducing deaths from heart attacks, the state government, in collaboration with Lucknow's Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), launched the UP STEMI Care Program on Saturday. The move is designed to address the alarming rise in ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) — a severe and time-critical form of heart attack — by providing early diagnosis and treatment, especially in rural and underserved areas of the district and its nearby areas. (For representation) At the launch event, Professor Aditya Kapoor, the head of Cardiology at SGPGIMS, said, 'This programme is a major leap in reducing preventable cardiac deaths in UP. By combining medical expertise with government support, we are creating a model that the entire country can follow.' The core of the programme is a hub-and-spoke model that ensures timely thrombolysis (clot-busting treatment) at peripheral hospitals, with rapid referral for advanced cardiac interventions like PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention) at tertiary care centre such as SGPGIMS. The initiative includes the distribution of tenecteplase, a potent fibrinolytic drug, and the deployment of tele-ECG technology for real-time diagnosis and treatment initiation. Under this strategy, community and district hospitals (spokes) are now equipped to deliver fibrinolysis within the crucial first hour of a heart attack, while specialised hubs like SGPGIMS will handle advanced care within 3–24 hours. This closes a long-standing gap between early intervention and expert treatment. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in India, accounting for over 28% of all deaths, according to a government note. Coronary artery disease (CAD), a major contributor, is now affecting Indians nearly a decade earlier than those in Western countries. In Uttar Pradesh alone, nearly 5 lakh STEMI cases occur annually, and access to timely, specialised care remains limited in non-urban regions. Among those aged 40–69 and above 70, CAD accounts for nearly 25% of all deaths. Even among those under 40, CAD causes 10% of all deaths — an alarming statistic that underscores the urgency of intervention. Regarding the initiative, Partha Sarthi Sen Sharma, the principal secretary of Health and Medical Education, said, 'This is a blueprint for scalable cardiac care across India.' Prof. R.K. Dhiman of SGPGIMS expressed his full support to the programme, calling it a transformative step in public health and assuring continued institutional backing.

‘Family planning boosts women power, pillar of holistic devpt'

Lucknow: Emphasising that family planning was an effective means to women's empowerment, principal secretary, health and family welfare, Partha Sarthi Sen Sharma said that family planning is not just about population control, it must be seen as a pillar of holistic development. "The aim of family planning is not mere population control, but to build an empowered, educated and healthy society. This requires an integrated approach linking education, nutrition, women's empowerment and health. Such coordination is not possible without convergence across departments. The integrated development model adopted in Shravasti is a great example and should be replicated in other high-priority districts," Sharma said on Friday. He was presiding over a workshop titled 'Empowering women through family planning: Advancing intersectoral convergence in UP'. Organised by Mamta Health Institute for Mother and Child, with support from the Gates Foundation, the event reinforced multi-sectoral collaboration to strengthen family planning services and accessibility across the state. The deliberations focused on enhancing the reach, quality and effectiveness of family planning services through stronger multi-sectoral coordination. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Echoing similar thoughts, principal secretary, department of women welfare, Leena Johari said, "It's not 'you' and 'me', but 'we' that can bring true change.
