Orlando Pirates find replacement for Paseka Mako?
Two left-backs are not enough at clubs like Orlando Pirates to compete in the Betway Premiership , especially with the CAF Champions League returning to the Orlando Stadium next season. Paseko Mako has left the club, minus one left-back. According to this report, the Sea Robbers need an addition to compete and cover for Deon Hotto and Yanga Madiba . Kick Off believes that SuperSport United and Amajita captain Neo Rapoo has been noticed by the Orlando Pirates scouts. Rapoo, hailing from Lonehill, Johannesburg, made his senior debut at Matsatsantsa in 2022 just after his 17th birthday. Since then, Rapoo has earned 22 games despite a lengthy injury in the winter of 2024. 'Neo is one of the players that the scouts at Orlando Pirates have identified,' Kick Off reported. 'The club has already made inquiries about the availability of the player for next season,' a source added to the outlet. Rapoo also captained South Africa's U20 team at the Afcon championship in Morocco in May, including a crucial goal against Sierra Leone in Group A. Another Orlando Pirates player to Kaizer Chiefs?
News coming out of Johannesburg says Kaizer Chiefs are in advanced talks to sign Paseko Mako. The 31-year-old left-back left Orlando Pirates just 24 hours ago. Reports from previous months confirmed that coach Nasreddine Nabi and Amakhosi were set to prioritise the left-back position this winter, with Stellenbosch FC's Fawaaz Basadien the dream target. According to the breaking news, Kaizer Chiefs are moments away from signing Mako on a free deal. Images: @orlandopirates/X Rulani sends honest message to Orlando Pirates boss Yesterday, we discovered that Orlando Pirates' former defender Thabiso Monyane has been offered to Kaizer Chiefs. Today's report has just revealed that Mako may also be wearing gold and black next season. 'SABC Sport can exclusively reveal that former Orlando Pirates defender Paseka Mako could be heading to Naturena as talks with Kaizer Chiefs have progressed to an advanced stage,' Mazola Molefe reported. 'According to information gathered by the public broadcaster, the 31-year-old has entered into talks with their Soweto rivals over a potential move to The Glamour Boys ahead of the upcoming season. Mako, who was born in Zebediela, Limpopo, endured an injury-ravaged season with Orlando Pirates last term. He only made 17 appearances, mainly as a substitute, while the 34-year-old Deon Hotto was a regular starter. The Buccaneers also used the newly promoted Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Yanga Madiba in that left-back role. 'Mako now presents a viable option and will arrive as a free agent, should the finer details be ironed out and all parties involved are satisfied,' Molefe added. Mako, whose football career started at Mamelodi Sundowns' development setup, made his professional debut in the Motsepe Foundation Championship with the defunct Cape Town All Stars, before moving to Chippa United and eventually Orlando Pirates. Orlando Pirates triumph over Kaizer Chiefs secures Jose Riveiro's legend status
Paseko Mako and Gaston Sirino Orlando Pirates' Paseko Mako and Gaston Sirino of Kaizer Chiefs battle for possession at the FNB Stadium. Photo: ITUMELENG ENGLISH Independent Media Image: ITUMELENG ENGLISH Independent Media Comment by Matshelane Mamabolo NO MATTER what happens next weekend and in the remaining matches of the season, Jose Riveiro has secured his status as an Orlando Pirates legend as Saturday's 2-1 victory over Kaizer Chiefs ensured that. In leading the Buccaneers to completing a season double over Amakhosi, the Spaniard equalled the record of the most derby wins by a coach of either Soweto giants in the Premier Soccer League era. This was his fifth win, the same number as that of former Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter. The soft-spoken coach, who is leaving the club at the end of the season, could well go ahead of the Englishman before he returns home to Vigo. All he needs to do is to ensure Pirates hold on to their Nedbank Cup title when they play the same Chiefs at Moses Mabhida Stadium next Saturday. And on the strength of this win, it would be folly to bet against him winning an unprecedented third, successive title of the country's premier club knockout competition. Pre-match, the general feeling was that Pirates were on a hiding to nothing – the Buccaneers having lost their two matches prior and the camp appearing somewhat disillusioned. Next Stay Close ✕ The superstitious among us were even pointing out that 'bad things happen in threes'. When Chiefs opened the scoring via Makabi Glody Lilepo within the first two minutes, the observant picked up that it was the third match in a row that Pirates were conceding a goal to a DR Congolese player. Pyramids FC's Fiston Mayele had scored the winner and his compatriot Tresor Yamba was on the mark for Sekhukhune United in their 1-0 victory at Orlando Stadium midweek. Pirates were going to fall to a Congolese goal yet again it seemed, Chiefs particularly firing on all cylinders in the initial stages. Amidst it all, Riveiro maintained his usual calm demeanour on the bench, standing occasionally to direct proceedings and then taking that trademark posture of his on the edge of the technical area to watch the match with his elbow on his knee and the chin balanced on his palm. He had a game-plan, and he was not about to be dissuaded from it by Chiefs enjoying the upper hand. After all, this is a Pirates team he has painstakingly built over three years, and he knows exactly what they can do and how they can do it. And true to form, Pirates levelled matters through Evidence Makgopa before the halftime break, and normalcy was restored. Pirates dictated matters henceforth, with Mohau Nkota making good runs on the wing and Relebohile Mofokeng occasionally showing off his immense skills. Through it all, the coach they had referred to as a plumber when he first came over here watched like a hawk from the bench. At times he would share ideas with his assistant Mandla Ncikazi as they plotted how to get the Buccaneers back to winning ways. They need not have bothered much, because they had a talisman on the field, and he delivered, with Mofokeng scoring what turned out to be the winning goal as Pirates won a fifth successive match against their bitter enemies. Cometh the man, cometh the Cocomelon 👶🔥 Rele Mofokeng is the real deal 😤 📺 Stream #BetwayPrem on DStv: — SuperSport Football ⚽️ (@SSFootball) May 3, 2025 It was a victory that served to illustrate just how superb a coach Riveiro is, and explained just why Pirates had tried to get him to extend his stay at the end of his three-year contract. But why should he stay on when he has proven himself already? Sure, the league title has eluded him, and it is unlikely he will pull the rug from underneath champions Mamelodi Sundowns' feet. Yet, that failure should not be allowed to take away from the incredible work Riveiro has done as Pirates coach.

GOOD NEWS: Orlando Pirates secure left-back's future!
Orlando Pirates have reportedly tied down Paseko Mako to an extended two year deal amid a lack of depth in the left-back position. 'For now, he [Mako] is the only left back who can be there next season as the future of captain Innocent Maela hangs in the balance. So that is why they have decided to keep him for a further two seasons.' a source revealed. One of the Buccaneers current longest-servants, Mako joined in 2018, amassing 170 appearances for the Soweto giants thus far. Bafana coach Hugo Broos believes this will be Relebohile Mofokeng's last season with Orlando Pirates, saying, 'Talking about Mofokeng, I just hope that he makes the right decisions. And that he is not going to a team where he won't play. 'I see all the things around, Barcelona and Rangers and… (sighs) I'm a little bit afraid. I just hope that the people around make the choice of the best sportive solution and not the best financial solution. 'Okay, I think his parents want the best for him, that's for sure. But there is another guy who wants to win a lot of money also, but that's the problem. But ok, let's hope, maybe I talked too soon about that. 'We'll see. I think in June, Rele will not be a player of Orlando Pirates anymore, but a good choice is very important.' Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
