Juvenile charged in shooting of Paterson man
A 17-year-old Paterson boy has been charged in connection with the shooting death of a man playing dominoes last month near a downtown intersection in the city, the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office announced on Saturday, June 7. Prosecutors said he is charged with "acts of juvenile delinquency" that would constitute the crimes of felony murder, first degree; murder, first degree; robbery, first degree; and conspiracy to commit robbery, second degree, "if he were an adult." The shooting took place around 6:30 p.m on May 11, during the attempted robbery of a group of men playing dominoes in the area of Rosa Parks Boulevard and Lafayette Street. Investigators said three suspects approached the victim and attempted to take his gold chain. One of the suspects discharged a firearm, striking the victim, later identified as Rulsy Mata Sosa, 42, of Paterson. Sosa was transported to Saint Joseph's University Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased. Investigators say the juvenile charged on Saturday was one of the individuals involved. He was taken into custody on June 6 without incident and is currently detained pending further court proceedings. His name was not released due to his juvenile status. The shooting was one of three in the city in over 28 hours that weekend, law enforcement sources said. The killing was Paterson's seventh homicide of 2025. At the same point last year, the city had four homicides. The case has been referred to the Passaic County Family Court, Juvenile Part, for further proceedings.
