The deal for two people includes four items - a Taste The Difference main, side, dessert and drink - for the new price of £15 with a Nectar card, up from £12 just a few weeks ago. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Meal deal prices have jumped at Sainsbury's Credit: Getty The move follows similar price hikes on rival supermarkets' dine-in deals, with Tesco, M&S and Waitrose also hiking the cost to £15 in recent months. But shoppers have protested, with one saying a 25% hike does not mirror inflation. One customer wrote on "Why are you copying @waitrose and putting up your main meal deal from £12 to £15 without any notice - that's a 25% increase!!!... 'Another supermarket losing my custom." Another added: 'That's a 25% increase, massively over the current rate of inflation." A third fumed on the review site "Price of meal deal which includes a main, side, dessert and a bottle of wine has increased by £3 in a week. Last week £12 this week £15! "They must have seen how inflation had risen and decided to contribute to these figures." Sainsbury's said this is the first time it has increased the price of the dine-in deal since its launch in August 2021. In a statement, the supermarket said: 'With thousands of delicious possible combinations to choose from, customers can continue to save on dining out for two by selecting their favourite main, side, dessert and drink from our Taste the Difference range for £15. 'Whether enjoying a British Beef Ranch Steak, or sneaking an extra spoonful of the Lemon, Passion Fruit & Yuzu Possets, customers can create the perfect dining experience from home for great value, without compromising on taste. 'We've also recently introduced two new flavourful main dishes which incorporate the high-quality ingredients customers would expect, with a Slow Cooked Beef Bourguignon and Crackling Pork Belly now available.' Waitrose, which has also increased the price of its top end meal deal from £12 to £15, said: 'We know customers are increasingly looking to enjoy the quality of a restaurant meal at home. 'Our No.1 dine-in meal deal includes a brilliant range of premium products, and while we're always working hard to keep costs down, we're confident this still provides great value.' Earlier this year Tesco said it had worked to improve the quality of its Finest Dine In range, investing in the ingredients and recipes, and introducing an updated menu. Its Clubcard members now pay £15 for two people for its dine-in meal deal, with savings of up to £22.50, for a main, side, dessert and drink. And last October, ready-meals fans were angry because M&S hiked its popular Gastropub meal offer from £12 to £15, with new creations included by Tom Kerridge. The store said 95% of the dishes were new or had been improved.

Better Sour clean-label sweets brand attracts investor cash for growth
Better Sour, a US-based start-up making clean-label sweets, has attracted investment from Taste Tomorrow Ventures. The early-stage investment arm of beverage incubator LA Libations did not disclosed the size of the capital injection nor any stake it has taken in Better Sour, founded in 2023 by entrepreneurs Bella Hughes and Semira Nikou. Better Sour aims 'to transform the candy aisle' with its brand of sour gummies, which are made using 'clean, plant-based ingredients and dyes' derived from fruits and vegetables. According to Danny Stepper, co-founder of Taste Tomorrow Ventures, the investment will support Better Sour's 'next phase of growth and deepens our commitment to backing diverse founders who are reshaping the future of snacks'. Commenting on the funding, Ms Hughes said in a statement: "We are incredibly excited to partner with Taste Tomorrow Ventures and their sister division, LA Libations, whose team understands not only the power of brand and innovation, but the importance of diverse leadership and building with purpose. 'This partnership will help us scale our mission and reach more consumers craving bold taste and culinary better-for-you candy.' Better Sour's products are currently available in more than 3,300 stores and on the Amazon online platform. They are offered in flavours such as Guava Calamansi Lime, Pomegranate Apricot and Passion Fruit, according to Better Sour's website. Scott Guthrie, managing director at Taste Tomorrow Ventures, added: 'Better Sour's rise is a testament to the power of innovation in a multibillion-dollar category, where gummy candy is seeing double-digit growth and sour flavours are exploding, driving the majority of growth in the segment.' Taste Tomorrow Ventures was launched by LA Libations co-founders Stepper and Dino Sarti, in collaboration with Guthrie, whose career includes leadership roles at PepsiCo, Sodastream and Disney. The venture-capital firm kicked off its inaugural fund in March having raised $30m. Taste Tomorrow Ventures' first investment was Just Ice Tea, a US-based beverage company. Just Ice Tea was created by Seth Goldman, the entrepreneur behind Honest Tea, which he sold to The Coca-Cola Company in 2011. Coca-Cola later discontinued the Honest Tea brand approximately three years ago. "Better Sour clean-label sweets brand attracts investor cash for growth " was originally created and published by Just Food, a GlobalData owned brand. Root Awakening: Passion fruit plant needs bigger pot, climbing support
The Passion Fruit is a vine and will need a sturdy structure to climb on. PHOTO: JOSEPH TU Vine could be the Passion Fruit plant I have been growing this plant in a pot indoors. What is it and how do I take better care of it? Joseph Tu The vine is probably the Passion Fruit plant (Passiflora edulis). You or someone else may have inadvertently sown its seeds after eating passion fruit previously. The plant will grow larger over time and requires a larger pot to thrive. It is a sun-loving species that needs at least six hours of direct sunlight daily . As it is a vine, it also needs a sturdy structure to climb on. Hand pollination may need to be performed in high-rise gardens due to a lack of pollinators. Dumb Cane and its relatives require more light Leaves can turn yellow if the plants are allowed to dry out for too long. PHOTO: KISHORE RENJAN These indoor plants were planted approximately three months ago. Recently I noticed the leaves turning yellow and drooping. What is wrong? Kishore Renjan The plants visible in the picture include Dumbcane (Dieffenbachia) and Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema). Their leaves could be yellowing due to a lack of sunlight. The plants also appear rather stretched. Although these are shade-tolerant plants, they will not thrive in dim light. Place them in a location that gets four to six hours of filtered sunlight a day. Filtered sunlight will cast a shadow with a fuzzy edge. Next, water your plants adequately, as they can wilt and turn yellow if allowed to dry out for long periods. Ulam Raja is a traditional vegetable The silver streaks on this Ulam Raja's leaves could be due to spider mites. PHOTO: CHRIS ANG What is this plant and is it edible? Also, why are the bottom parts turning brown? Chris Ang The plant is commonly known as Ulam Raja (Cosmos caudatus). Its young leaves are picked and added to traditional salads called 'ulam' in this part of the world. It is normal for older leaves to turn brown and fall off, but make sure the plant is well-watered so its leaves do not dry out totally. There may also be a pest infestation on your plant. The silver streaks on the leaves could be due to spider mites. Take appropriate action by spraying the plants with summer oil, which is available at local nurseries, as needed. Pomegranate could be shedding due to lack of light Why is my pomegranate plant shedding yellow leaves, especially at the bottom? Stanley Teh Rotate the pot periodically to ensure all parts of the plant are exposed to light. PHOTO: STANLEY TEH The pomegranate plant requires direct sunlight to thrive. The leaves near the base of the plant are being shaded by its upper canopy, which is blocking the light, and appear to be facing away from the light source. Ensure the plant gets at least six hours of direct sunlight a day. Rotate the pot periodically to ensure all parts of the plant are exposed to light. Also, note that this species is sensitive to wet feet. You may want to let the plant dry out slightly between watering sessions. Ylang-ylang infested with sap-sucking pests What are these white pests on my Ylang-ylang? How do I get rid of them? Rose Tang Spray the plant with a pesticide such as summer oil to suffocate the pests. PHOTO: ROSE TANG The white dots appear to be scale insects, a type of sap-sucking pest. You can use a soft toothbrush to remove them. Next, spray the plant with a pesticide such as summer oil, ensuring complete coverage to suffocate the pests. Repeated applications are required for adequate control. Answers by Dr Wilson Wong, an NParks-certified practising horticulturist and parks manager.
