Double delight for Wexford trainer Anton Butler at Enniscorthy Greyhound Stadium
And it was a very good night for Wexford trainer Anton Butler with a book-ended double. The first race saw his charge, Mayflower Storm, going up well from his trap two draw. And with a wall of runners neck and neck into the first bend, he had the inside line. Storm made good use of it to lead into the back straight and it was a lead he was never going to give up, running out a comfortable three-length winner from trap five runner Cushie Rustic in a fast 28.81. Butler's other winner came in race nine, the last of the night, when De Bono Lad was sent off the 6/4 favourite and gave his followers few anxious moments. He showed far too much early pace for the field, racing into a clear lead into the opening bends, and ran out a very clear six lengths winner in a good time of 32.84. Enniscorthy trainer Thomas Codd continued his good run when also recording a nice double. His Cushie Robyn flew from traps to open up a big lead down the back and looked home for all money. However, his backers got a little fright close to home as his stride shortened dramatically and trap two runner Trump Time was coming fast, but Cushie had done enough to hold on by half a length. Then in race four, Cushie Mick ran a game race and was not for losing. He showed the better early pace to grab the lead into the opening bend and go a few lengths clear down the back. However, trap six runner Dark Fairy came with a strong challenge between the lower bends to just take the lead into the home straight, but Cushie battled back near the line to get the verdict by a neck in a time of 29.25. ADVERTISEMENT Learn more The Monday night card featured the semi-finals of the Wexford Greyhound Owners and Breeders Unraced Stake. And both were won by Tipperary trainer Pat Buckley as Sallagh Larry and Sallagh Curly prevailed. The first semi saw a bit of a shock as red-hot favourite Untold Story failed to qualify. Trap two runner Sallagh Larry led and ran out an easy winner in a fast time of 28.77. Not to be outdone, his full brother Sallagh Curly was sent off the red-hot 2/5 favourite in the second semi. And while he was slow away from his trap two draw, he tracked beautifully on the rail around the opening bends to race to the lead by the second bend and went right away to score an impressive eight and a half lengths victory in a fast 28.78. The brothers look like they will be hard to stop, but as we all know anything can happen in finals. ‘Hardest game I ever had to coach': Moncton Wildcats deal with tragedy at Memorial Cup
Head coach of the Moncton Wildcats, Gardiner MacDougall, is pictured at the Avenir Centre in Moncton, N.B. The Moncton Wildcats are dealing with the loss of a member of their hockey family. Moments after the team's Monday night loss to the Medicine Hat Tigers, Wildcats head coach Gardiner MacDougall spoke to the media during a post-game press conference. MacDougall said about 20 minutes before the game Rimouski RCMP contacted his son Taylor, the team's general manger, to notify him that his father-in-law Pat Buckley died of a heart attack while golfing in Rimouski. 'Taylor told me about five minutes before we started the game. So, it is certainly a devastating loss and it's the hardest game I ever had to coach,' said MacDougall, who was clearly emotional. MacDougall said Buckley was an unbelievable sportsman. 'A topnotch golfer. A former university hockey player. He was a second father to my son Taylor. They bonded like no other. Obviously, the hardest game I've ever had to coach,' said MacDougall. A spokesperson for the Wildcats said the Canadian Hockey League has given Gardiner and Taylor the day off from media on Tuesday. MacDougall said the players, who are scheduled to speak to the media after their practice Tuesday afternoon, were not aware prior to the game. Tough loss Moncton was defeated 3-1 by the Medicine Hat Tigers on Monday. Ryder Ritchie scored twice and added an assist for the Tigers (0-2). Medicine Hat will play the London Knights (2-0) Tuesday night and the winner will advance to Sunday's final. Riverview, N.B.'s Dyllan Gill scored the lone goal for the Wildcats (0-2). Down 2-1, the Wildcats pulled their goalie late in third period but were called for too many on the ice with 1:22 remaining. Gavin McKenna scored an empty-net goal with seven seconds left in the game. Medicine Hat outshot the Wildcats 41-22. Moncton will play the host Rimouski Oceanic (0-2) on Wednesday evening with the loser being eliminated from the four-team tournament. The winner will player the loser of the London/Medicine Hat game in Friday night's semi-final. The Wildcats defeated the Oceanic in six games in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League championship final. With files from the Canadian Press.
