Feds say Huntington Beach is a sanctuary city; city officials call designation a ‘serious mistake'
The Department of Homeland Security recently listed Huntington Beach as a sanctuary city, and officials within one of SoCal's most prominent Republican strongholds are strongly denying the designation. A press release issued by the City of Huntington Beach states that the community's inclusion on the DHS list of more than 500 sanctuary jurisdictions was a 'serious mistake' and 'does not reflect the city council's formally adopted policy.' In January 2025, the city passed a law that did the exact opposite of what federal officials did in the list issued on Thursday: Huntington Beach is officially a 'non-sanctuary city.' 'We adopted a formal policy on this,' Huntington Beach Mayor Pat Burns said in the press release, which was issued Friday. 'It went before the council, and we unanimously agreed that Huntington Beach is not a sanctuary city.' 'We took deliberate action to make our non-sanctuary stance clear,' Mayor Burns added. Burns elaborated that the DHS' inclusion of his city in the list is 'either a misprint or a serious mistake,' and that federal officials have been notified; he is also 'confident the DHS error will be corrected promptly.' However, as of Saturday morning, Huntington Beach still appeared on the list. The city's press release noted that several other jurisdictions across the U.S., including Baltimore, Las Vegas and Shasta County, California, have been misidentified as sanctuary jurisdictions. Mayor Burns said that Santa Ana is the only city within Orange County that has been 'publicly identified' as a sanctuary city; however, it was not included in the DHS list. Santa Ana was still not on the list as of Saturday morning. The full list of sanctuary jurisdictions in the United States can be viewed here. Huntington Beach has long been considered one of California's most conservative cities; the Wall Street Journal described the city council, which, as of December, is made up entirely of Republicans, as 'America's Trumpiest.' Earlier this year, the city council introduced plans to install a 'MAGA' plaque at the Central Library to celebrate Huntington Beach's 50th anniversary. Instead of signifying 'Make America Great Again,' the plaque's acronym stands for 'Magical, Alluring, Galvanizing, Adventurous.' The city council confirmed that the acronym was deliberately chosen to represent the 'Make America Great Again' slogan used by President Donald Trump and adopted by the Republican Party. After some pushback from residents — including former NFL punter Chris Kluwe, who was arrested while protesting at a February city council meeting — officials unanimously approved the $7,000 plaque, albeit with a slightly modified design and added security. A Federal List of Immigrant ‘Sanctuaries' Nets Trump Allies and Foes Alike
The January vote was unanimous. Huntington Beach, Calif., was 'a non-sanctuary city for illegal immigration,' its City Council declared. So local officials in the conservative Orange County coastal redoubt found it rather surprising to find on Friday morning that their city had been included on a list of 'sanctuary jurisdictions,' which, the Department of Homeland Security charged, 'are deliberately and shamefully obstructing the enforcement of federal immigration laws.' 'I've already called somebody with the feds and said this couldn't be further from the truth,' said Huntington Beach's mayor, Pat Burns, 'so let's straighten it out.' 'I'd love to know, really, who came up with this list,' he added. 'It's very negligent.' Huntington Beach is one of more than 600 cities, counties and states that the federal government has accused of shielding 'dangerous criminal aliens.' The list, which was published on Thursday, was mandated by an April executive order that explicitly threatened the jurisdictions with the termination of federal contracts and declared they might even be breaking the law. Some of the jurisdictions on the list had indeed designated themselves as sanctuary cities in resolutions or executive orders. Officials in other places argued that the phrase 'sanctuary city' did not technically apply, though they had pledged to protect immigrants. But mixed among them were many counties and cities that openly support efforts to apprehend and deport immigrants, or have even been actively cooperating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Officials in other places that had voted overwhelmingly for President Trump but were far from the front lines of the immigration debate were simply bewildered. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Huntington Beach mistakenly added to sanctuary city list from Homeland Security
Huntington Beach city leaders do not hide their support for President Donald Trump and his policies. So, when their town ended up on a sanctuary city list, accused of defying federal law, the mayor didn't mince words. "It's pure negligence," Mayor Pat Burns said. "It's government, unfortunately, at its best. That's how we have such a bad reputation." The Department of Homeland Security published the list to identify sanctuary cities and counties deliberately obstructing the enforcement of federal immigration law. La Puente, Long Beach, Los Angeles and Malibu join Huntington Beach on the list. However, Santa Ana, the first Orange County to designate itself as a sanctuary for undocumented immigrants, was notably absent on the list. Huntington Beach declared itself a "non-sanctuary city" after President Trump's inauguration. "In January, we submitted a declaration, and our council voted 7-0 to support that our city, Huntington Beach, is a non-sanctuary city," Burns said. "It's pretty simple. Huntington Beach first we want the full effect of every law enforcement agency that we can have." Burns believes Homeland Security will amend its list. He hopes someone will be held accountable for the mistake. A DHS spokesperson said the list will be actively reviewed and can be changed at any time.

Huntington Beach approves agreement for lifeguard tower advertisements
Advertisements are a step closer to appearing on the back of each lifeguard tower on Huntington City Beach. The City Council Tuesday night approved a three-year agreement with a Huntington Beach-based company, Rio Media, to implement the program. Five council members approved the agreement, including Mayor Pat Burns and Mayor Pro Tem Casey McKeon. Councilman Butch Twining recused himself, as he said he was friends with one of the bidders, while Councilman Andrew Gruel was absent. 'This is a great revenue generating opportunity, getting creative,' McKeon said. 'This is done very tastefully, and it's a good public service.' City officials first unveiled a design for the back of 24 towers on Huntington City Beach last November, an opportunity identified by the Huntington Beach Fire Department. In addition to the advertisements, the design includes beach safety information and a QR code to access Rio estimated that the tower advertisements could generate at least $1 million annually, 70% of which would go to the city and 30% of which would go to the vendor. High-traffic towers are expected to generate about half of that total. A request for proposals process brought two of the bidders, and the city went with Rio. Huntington Beach Fire Chief Eric McCoy said during Tuesday night's meeting that a local company would also be doing the wraps for the towers. 'We'll have two H.B. companies involved in the process, which is something we're really excited about,' McCoy said.

Canadiens React to NHL's Announcement on Coach Martin St. Louis
This season, the Montreal Canadiens surprised the league by earning a playoff berth for the first time since 2021, finishing with a 40-31-11 record and 91 points. The team clinched the final wild-card spot in the East on the last day of the regular season. Advertisement From December 3 onward, they posted a 32–18-8 record, climbing up the conference standings and with a .621 points percentage. Montreal, the youngest team in the playoffs, also went 26-14-8 after Christmas. All of that earned head coach Martin St. Louis a nomination for the Jack Adams Award on Friday, something the Habs reacted to with a message on X. 'Head coach Martin St-Louis has been named a finalist for the Jack Adams Award! 🏆' along with a photo of the coach next to the trophy. St. Louis is just the sixth Canadiens coach to be nominated for the award since its inception in 1973–74, and the first since Guy Carbonneau in 2008. Advertisement Only Scotty Bowman and Pat Burns have won it while with Montreal. St. Louis also becomes the first former Hart Trophy winner to receive a Jack Adams nomination. Hired initially with no prior coaching experience, St. Louis took over from Dominique Ducharme midway through the 2021-22 season and officially became head coach that summer. St. Louis reached his 100th career win on Feb. 4 in a game against the San Jose Sharks.
