Aqib Talib Advises Broncos Rookie Jahdae Barron to Learn From Pat Surtain II
The Denver Broncos selected cornerback Jahdae Barron in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Pairing Barron with Pat Surtain II and Riley Moss creates one of the best cornerback trios in the NFL. Barron, in his rookie year, will get to learn alongside Surtain and Moss as he transitions to the NFL. With the Broncos having a strong history of elite cornerbacks, there will be plenty of former and current players willing to help Barron acclimate to the NFL. Advertisement Former Broncos All-Pro cornerback Aqib Talib also provided some advice for the rookie cornerback. During his appearance on DNVR Sports with Bennie Fowler, Talib was asked what kind of advice he'd give to Barron entering the NFL. Talib gave a simple answer, "You got the cheat code, bro. Follow Surtain around, ask him questions, get his number, and see how to be a pro. He's a good dude, he's not going to stiff-arm you and mislead you on information. Get up under that dude's wing and learn how to be a pro." Talib also had advice on how to approach entering the league, with what he did when he came to the NFL. Talib said, "I'd tell my guy to reset, that's what I did, I got to the league, and it's like, 'alright, this is what I dreamed of, now I gotta set a new goal. I'm here now, what I wanna do now?'" Advertisement Coincidently, both Talib and Barron were both cornerbacks selected 20th overall. Coming into the NFL in 2008, Talib started with the Tampa bay Buccaneers before finding his way to the Broncos where he helped them win a Super Bowl in 2015. Denver Broncos cornerback Aqib Talib (21) before the game against the Dallas Cowboys at Sports Authority Field at Mile Chenoy-Imagn Images Talib was one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL when he was on the Broncos, and he was a huge reason why Denver was able to win the Super Bowl. He was a five-time Pro Bowler, with four coming in the four years he was in Denver. Taking advice from such a player makes a ton of sense. Talib's advice to 'reset' when entering the league and go under Surtain's wing is noteworthy advice for Barron to take. Advertisement With the successful career of Talib, and Surtain's immense success since joining the Broncos, there is plenty of reason for Barron to listen to Talib's advice when it comes to making it to the NFL. Broncos' Pat Surtain II claims rare cornerback win for NFL Defensive Player of the Year
USA TODAY and Yahoo may earn commission from links in this article. Pricing and availability subject to change. The NFL Defensive Player of the Year award has largely been the domain of the league's top pass rushers in recent years. The 2024 season, however, featured a breakthrough performance. Denver Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain II won the award on Thursday at NFL Honors, joining Stephon Gilmore as just the second player at the position since 2010 to be given the recognition. Surtain narrowly beat out Pittsburgh Steelers edge rusher T.J. Watt, who took home the honor in 2021. Surtain proved instrumental in ending the Broncos' eight-year playoff drought, giving Denver's seventh-ranked defense a lockdown presence on the back end. An All-Pro selection for the second time and Pro Bowl choice for the third time in his four-year career, he recorded four interceptions and 11 passes defensed. Despite often shadowing top receivers, Surtain was targeted on just 10.9% of his snaps, the lowest rate since 2021 among cornerbacks with at least 300 coverage snaps, according to Next Gen Stats. His 306 yards allowed represented the lowest total by any NFL cornerback with 375 or more coverage snaps this season, per Next Gen Stats. "It would be a huge honor," Surtain said in January about the possibility of winning Defensive Player of the Year. "It's something that I worked for, it's an award that I dreamed of all my life. To go at the top of the professional level and win such a prestigious award, it would mean a lot. "But ... I think a lot of credit goes into the play of the team's success as well, and what we were able to do defensively as a unit, establish ourselves in this league and become one of the premier defenses in this league. And my success doesn't start without our defense's success." Surtain is only the second Broncos player to win the award after Randy Gradishar claimed it in 1978.
