This Award-Winning Blockbuster Film Made For Just Rs 12 Lakh Set Off Bollywood's Underworld Genre
When Vidhu Vinod Chopra set out to make Parinda in 1989, he had little money but a powerful story. With just Rs 12 lakh and a team of actors still climbing the ladder of stardom, he created a gritty crime drama that would go on to reshape Hindi cinema. What followed was not just box office success, Rs 9 crore in earnings, but a cultural shift. Parinda is now widely considered the film that laid the foundation for Bollywood's underworld genre. Starring Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Madhuri Dixit, and Nana Patekar, the film broke away from the melodrama of the era. (News18 Hindi) Parinda portrayed gangland Mumbai with startling realism, long before films like Satya or Company made it fashionable. The raw intensity, atmospheric visuals, and tight narrative were unlike anything the audience had seen. The characters were grey, their morality blurred. Nana Patekar, who played the unpredictable gangster Anna, became a standout. His portrayal was unnerving and unpredictable, an unusual villain for its time. Before Parinda, Patekar was mostly known for his work in theatre. Madhuri Dixit, too, was still looking to break into the mainstream. But this film would change the trajectory for both of them. (News18 Hindi) Speaking to Hindustan Times, the director recalled how he refused to compromise despite the limited budget. "I'd seen Nana in a play called Purush, and it's very important to say this, but those days, I never used to curse. I was a very well-behaved young man from Kashmir. But it all changed because of Nana," he said. But Parinda wasn't an easy shoot. The friction between Chopra and Patekar on set has since become part of the film's lore. (News18 Hindi) Recounting one heated moment during a reality show appearance, Chopra revealed, "When I'd direct him (Nana) in a scene, he'd hurl abuses at me. I wondered how I would direct him at all. So, that's when I started abusing him back. I started swearing only because I had to direct Nana," adding, "There's a scene in the film where Nana asks if he has tears in his eyes after his wife has died… We'd been shooting all day, and it was late in the evening. Nana declared that he was too tired to continue and that he was going home. I told him, 'Sure, you pay for the overheads then'. He started swearing at me, I swore back, and in the scuffle, I tore his kurta. The cops on set said, 'We're here to protect you, and you're fighting among yourselves'." (News18 Hindi) Years later, Patekar gave his side of the story. Speaking in 2024, he said, "There's a tone to how we speak. Some people can't control their anger. I'm one of them. That day, the word 'action' was yelled so loudly it threw me off. My mood snapped. I have some unpleasant memories with Vidhu, and I think he does with me too. Even now, when we meet, it feels like it might be the last time." Despite the off-camera clashes, the results on-screen were electric. (News18 Hindi) Vidhu Vinod Chopra, a known perfectionist, reportedly had one actor slapped 17 times in a single scene to get the exact take he wanted. Jackie Shroff later revealed that detail in an interview, laughing off the relentless demands of his director. The accolades came swiftly. Parinda won five Filmfare Awards, including Best Supporting Actor for Nana Patekar and Best Editing for Renu Saluja. It also bagged a National Film Award and is now featured on many critics' lists of most influential films. (News18 Hindi)

I am being harassed in my own home: Bollywood actor Tanushree Dutta breaks down in disturbing video
Tanushree Dutta, the first woman in India to publicly accuse a Bollywood actor of sexual harassment, has once again found herself at the center of a distressing situation. In a recent video posted on her Instagram has gone viral. Dutta, visibly shaken, pleads for help, claiming she has been facing constant harassment since 2018. The former Bollywood actor, known for sparking India's #MeToo movement, opened up about her ongoing struggles, revealing the toll it has taken on her mental and physical health. In the emotional video, she shared, 'I'm sick and tired of this harassment!! It's been going on since 2018,' and expressed her frustration by saying, 'Please someone help me. I was so fed up today that I finally called the local police.' She explained that she had contacted the police after loud, unexplained banging noises continued outside her apartment, something that has been happening for years. 'Since 2020, I've heard loud banging above my roof and outside my door at odd hours,' she added, revealing the impact it's had on her. Dutta opened up about the emotional toll the harassment has taken on her, noting that she now lives alone and struggles to trust anyone, not even domestic staff. 'I've had maids planted in my home. They've stolen from me. Now I do all the work myself. I'm sick, my house is a mess, I can't function,' she said. However, her struggle isn't a new one. In 2018, Dutta alleged that actor Nana Patekar had sexually harassed her. She alleged that Patekar made unwanted advances on the sets of Horn Ok Pleassss in 2008 during a dance sequence. What followed, she claims, was a coordinated smear campaign to discredit her, including being labeled a 'tantrum queen.' Her bravery in this public stand helped ignite India's #MeToo movement, mirroring the impact of similar movements in Hollywood. In addition to Patekar, Dutta also came forward with allegations of mistreatment from filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri during the filming of Chocolate (2005). In an interview with journalist Faridoon Shahryar, Dutta revealed how Agnihotri would call her to the set on days when she wasn't shooting. She would spend entire days sitting idle, unable to even sit in her vanity. 'Take your clothes off and dance in front of him,' Agnihotri allegedly told her, referring to a scene she wasn't even initially a part of. Her latest video has garnered widespread attention and support from her followers while some have expressed grave concern for her mental wellbeing and echoed her calls for her justice. She says she will soon file a formal complaint at the police station and has hinted that there is more yet to be revealed. Despite the years of pain, Dutta's voice remains one of the most significant in the Indian #MeToo movement.

New Delhi, Apr 23 (UNI) A Delhi Court on Wednesday issued a non bailable warrant against Medha Patkar for infringing the court order by not furnishing the one-year probation bond and also not depositing the fine of Rs 1 lakh in a defamation case filed by Delhi Lieutenant Govenor Vinay Kumar Saxena. Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Vishal Singh said, "Instead of appearing before the Court and to comply with the order on sentence dated 08/04/2025, the convict is absent and deliberately failed to comply with the order on sentence and to avail of the benefit of probation subject to furnishing of the compensation amount". The court further said, "The intention of convict Medha Patkar is apparent that she is deliberately violating the Court order; she is avoiding to appear before the Court and also avoiding to accept the terms of sentence passed against her. There is no order of suspension of sentence passed by this Court on 08/04/2025". "The Court is left with no option than to enforce the production of convict Medha Patkar through coercive order. Issue NBWs against convict Medha Patkar, through office of Commissioner of Police, Delhi Police, for next date," the court said. It asked for report regarding the serving of the warrant on May 3, the next date of hearing. The court said, "On the next date, if the convict fails to comply with the terms of order on sentence dated 08/04/2025, the Court will be constrained to reconsider the benevolent sentence and will have to alter the order on sentence". An application was filed on behalf of Medha Patkar for adjournment of the case in view of pendency of criminal revision petition filed before the High Court, but the judge dismissed the prayer. The court said, "The application has no substance; there is no direction in order dated 22/04/2025 of Hon'ble High Court that convict Medha Patkar is not required to comply with order on sentence dated 08/04/2025 passed by this Court.
