Watch Gallants goal that broke the hearts of Orlando Pirates fans
Orlando Pirates suffered their second successive league defeat of the season at the hands of Marumo Gallants on Tuesday. The Buccaneers travelled to Bloemfontein eager to bounce back from their 1-0 defeat to Sekhukhune United last weekend. Abdeslam Ouaddou made changes to the Pirates team that lost to Sekhukhune United with one eye on Saturday's MTN8 semifinal clash against Mamelodi Sundowns. And those changes proved effective, at least in the early stages of the first half as Pirates threw everything at Gallants. Patrick Maswanganyi opened the scoring with a clean finish in the 16th minute, but Gallants equalised just before the break through Daniel Msendami. In fact, the Soweto giants should have, at least, been three or four goals up at half-time by their finishing let them down. Bahlabane Ba Ntwa showed resilience in the second half of the game, and they were rewarded deep in stoppage time as substitute Jaisen Clifford scored the winner that broke the hearts of Bucs fans. The defeat has seen a section of Pirates fans call for the sacking of Ouaddou, with Jose Riveiro begged to return to the club. Orlando Pirates suffer disappointing defeat to Sekhukhune United in the Betway Premiership opener
Orlando Pirates midfielder Patrick Maswanganyi challenges for the ball against Sekhukhune United's Matlala Makgalwa during the Betway Premiership match at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto. Picture: Itumeleng English/ Independent Newspapers Image: Itumeleng English/ Independent Newspapers ORLANDO PIRATES (0) SEKHUKHUNE UNITED (1) Mkhize 48' Orlando - Orlando Pirates' Betway Premiership got off to an unpleasant note as they lost 1-0 to Sekhukhune United at Orlando Stadium on Saturday night. This was not the start Pirates' new coach Abdeslam Ouaddu had in mind as he knows that one of the club's mandates is to challenge for the title. Ouaddou would have collected three points that would have seen them come out of the blocks, especially after champions Mamelodi Sundowns dropped two points earlier. Sure, it was the first game of the season, but Ouaddu has already dented his reputation, after the team hit a record of successive wins in their first seven league games last season. Ouaddou's counterpart Eric Tinkler will be pleased by the result as they look to do better than their fourth-place finish of last season. Having Ouaddou come into this game at the back of the win in the MTN8 quarter-final, he was expected to start his league campaign on a high. But it wasn't to be. Sekhukhune ensured that they dashed those hopes as Siphesihle Mkhize netted immediately after the break to give his team all three points. Video Player is loading. The Moroccan didn't change much from the team that beat City here a week ago, with the only difference being the inclusion of Tshepo Mashiloane for Bandile Shandu. Mashiloane blew hot and cold on debut, resulting in a stressful moment for Ouddou who was already restless on the touchline, pacing up and down. The start of the game wasn't fluid as there were stops and gos which allowed Ouaddou to call his players and issue out instructions. Pirates' early dominance nearly gifted them the perfect start as Deon Hotto sent in a cross which Daniel Cardoso nearly slotted into his own net, only to be saved by the crossbar. Ouaddou knew the importance of winning as such when Sipho Mbule lived up to his MasterChef moniker, dishing up scintillating, that must have given him hope. But for all his enterprising football which prompted loud chants from the Ghost, Mbule's best effort was when he forced out a brilliant save from Renaldo Learner with a piledriver. Babina Noko were not dead and buried, though. They also had some good moments as Pirates' former players Thabang Monare and Linda Mntambo combined at times. Their combination didn't yield dividends in the first half as balls didn't reach Bradley Grobler who was watched like a hawk by Mbekezeli Mbokazi. Mbokazi and Co were only able to keep Sekhukhune at bay in the first half as Mkhize pounced early into the second half following a scramble inside Pirates' box.

Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns set for dream MTN8 semi-final: Here's WHEN
Orlando Pirates are set for a mouth-watering MTN8 semi-final tie with Gauteng rivals Mamelodi Sundowns following the conclusion of the first round of the competition on Sunday night. The two giants of South African football were drawn against each other, with the defending champion Buccaneers set to host Masandawana in the first of the two-legged semi-final. Orlando Pirates launching yet another pursuit for the MTN8 title with a comfortable quarter-final win as they look to keep the trophy for a fourth consecutive season. They breezed past Polokwane City in front of a packed Orlando Stadium on Saturday, aided by first-half goals from Oswin Appollis and Patrick Maswanganyi in a 2-0 win. Meanwhile, their opponents in the last four turned in a dominant display of their own a day later, brushing aside the challenge posed by Richards Bay to secure a 4-0 at Lucas Moripe Stadium. A dramatic draw that followed the latter fixture set up a dream clash, reminiscent of the 2022 edition of the competition which kicked off with a tensely-contested goalless draw in the first leg at Orlando Stadium. This was before the Buccaneers turned on the heat in the deciding leg at Peter Mokaba Stadium where Kermit Erasmus edged the visitors ahead early in the clash before a Monnapule Saleng brace that sealed a 3-0 win. It's a victory that proved significant in Orlando Pirates' current run in the tournament, as they went on to clinch the first of three consecutive titles, beating AmaZulu in the final. Their bitter rivals now stand in the way of an unprecedented streak, which could stretch to four titles. The Tshwane giants will not only be looking to put an end to their Soweto counterparts' dominance in the competition, but will also be seeking their first title since going all the way in the 2021. The two sides have served up some memorable cup clashes, including a dramatic Nedbank Cup final in Mbombela in June 2024. They have a chance to serve up another unforgettable chapter in their rivalry in the semi-final tie scheduled to get underway on the weekend of 16 August with the deciding leg kicking off a week later. Kick-off time is yet to be confirmed. Sekhukhune United will take on Stellenbosch FC in the other semi-final. Pirates draw against Magesi in their final match of the season
Orlando Pirates finished 12 points behind Mamelodi Sundowns in the Betway Premiership after drawing 1-1 with Magesi FC in their final match at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday. The 61 points collected by Pirates is their best tally ever in the Premier Soccer League era. They managed to win 19 games and reduce the gaps (16 and 23 points) they had finished adrift of the Brazilians in their previous two seasons under Jose Riveiro, who departed before the last four league games of this campaign. Pirates opened the scoring through Patrick Maswanganyi, who directed Relebohile Mofokeng's well-worked free kick towards goals in the seventh minute. Maswanganyi could have finished the first half with a brace if referee Msimeleli Mabuto had spotted Magesi defender Mzwandile Buthelezi cluttering into him inside the area just before half time. The entire first half was controlled by the Buccaneers, who had many chances to stretch their lead but failed to do so until they were punished by Magesi when they used their only chance effectively. Former Kaizer Chiefs player Edmore Chirambadare managed to beat Pirates keeper Sipho Chaine with a low strike, crisply-taken just outside the area after a good build-up that Pirates failed to stop. The second half was really a ding-dong battle with no side really able to create good chances to add to the scoreline, though Bucs still had the upper hand. With the draw Premiership rookies Magesi moved to 12th spot with 31 points. There was an emotional farewell for Pirates captain Innocent Maela, who got a standing ovation from the Buccaneers fans as he was being substituted in the 66th minute. Maela's contract will not be renewed by the club and it is not yet clear if he will continue playing elsewhere or will be given a role within the club. The final match of the season will be played at noon on Thursday where SuperSport United and Lamontville Golden Arrows will complete a fixture that was halted at 1-1 at half time because a floodlights failure at Lucas Moripe Stadium on February 23.
