Red Sox Trade Idea Cuts Ties With Wilyer Abreu for Cy Young Winner Sandy Alcantara
Red Sox Trade Idea Cuts Ties With Wilyer Abreu for Cy Young Winner Sandy Alcantara originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Rumors have suggested that the Boston Red Sox could move on from outfielder Wilyer Abreu. Abreu, who was playing lights out to start the season, has quieted down a bit recently. He's hitting .252 with 13 home runs. While he's still a valuable piece to the Red Sox, moving on from the Gold Glover makes sense to ensure Roman Anthony daily at-bats. Moving Abreu allows them to do that in an easier manner. Advertisement In a recent trade idea from Patrick McAvoy, the Red Sox would accomplish just that in a deal with the Miami Marlins for right-hander Sandy Alcantara. The Red Sox desperately need pitching, and if they improve over the next few weeks to months, they should be in a position to make the postseason, holding an ace in their rotation if they were to land Alcantara. Boston Red Sox right fielder Wilyer Abreu (52) rounds the bases after hitting a home run during the first inning against the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway DeChiara-Imagn Images Boston Red Sox receive: Right-handed pitcher Sandy Alcantara Miami Marlins receive: Outfielder Abreu and Left-handed pitcher Payton Tolle (Red Sox's No. 15 prospect) 'Again, this is just a hypothetical. Abreu and Jarren Duran both have been mentioned recently as trade candidates. Boston has a surplus of outfield talent so it makes sense. Between the two, Abreu has more years of control and is significantly better defensively. Both of those are arguments to keep him, but that also could bring back a higher return,' he wrote. Advertisement Alcantara hasn't been his normal self during the 2025 campaign, but that's not much of a surprise given he's dealt with injuries. He owns a 6.69 ERA and has struck out just 59 hitters in 74.0 innings. If the Red Sox were to trade for him, the hope would be that he'd figure things out.
