Penfield, Canandaigua boys advance to state semis
In a back-and-forth battle in the Class A Far West Regional, Penfield came out on top with a 12-10 win over Orchard Park of Section VI. Penfield jumped out to a 5-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and maintained the lead for an 8-5 advantage at the half. Outscoring the Patriots 3-2 in the third quarter, Orchard Park trailed 10-8 with a quarter remaining. A goal from Orchard Park's Owen Wright made it a one-goal game with seven minutes left to play. Penfield responded with a goal from Tyler Pavone to retake the two-goal lead. Less than a minute later, Orchard Park answered as Justin Relosky fired one in to make it an 11-10 game. Jake Maurer scored the crucial insurance goal for Penfield with three minutes remaining. From there, Mason Schembri kept Orchard Park out of the net to secure the victory. Maurer led the way for the Patriots with five goals. Brodie Joyce, Griffin Banister and Pavone each tallied two. Penfield (14-7) advances to the Class A state semifinal where it will face West Genesee of Section III on Wednesday, June 11th. A seven-goal first quarter from Canandaigua powered it to the 15-6 win over Lake Shore (VI) in the Class B Far West Regionals. The Gray Wolves dominated from the start, taking a 13-1 advantage into the half. They scored just two goals in the second, but the first-half performance was enough to keep them out front. Patrick Olvany led the way with three goals. Drew Williamee, Mike Belles, AJ Sterman and Ryan McKeegan each put up two in the win. Pittsford surprises state ranked Canandaigua
Grant Lewis scored four times to lead Pittsford past a Canandaigua by a score of 11-10 in the rain Wednesday night at Sutherland. The Grey Wolves came into the game ranked number two in New York State at Class B. This was also the first time a Section Five team beat Canandaigua all season. Lewis scored with three seconds left in the first quarter to put Pittsford ahead 4-3. They led the rest of the way. Canandaigua had possession with a chance to tie only once in the fourth quarter. Charlie Ryan and Avery Valenti each added a pair of goals for the Panthers. Canandaigua was led by Patrick Olvany's hat trick. Mike Belles and Ryan Bremer each also scored twice.
