TenHaken talks time as mayor, future plans

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Paul TenHaken has been leading Sioux Falls for seven years, but he plans to take time away from politics after his final year as mayor. 'There's a lot of people announcing for different offices, so, it's coming up a lot in conversations. And, for the sake of that, I wanted to get it out there and let people know, hey, I'm not running for governor. I'm not running for Congress. Senate. I just want to focus on this last year in office, and finish well,' said Paul TenHaken, mayor of Sioux Falls. TenHaken says he plans to bring his focus back to entrepreneurship. But he doesn't have anything specific planned yet. 'It's really buttoning things up. You're really not starting anything new. You're landing the plane. And I use that analogy a lot,' said TenHaken. 'You know, we're going to be opening the Jacobson Plazas of the world for projects like that, where you have a lot of big infrastructure projects that we're working on, and we're going to finally break ground on the 85th and I-29.' As his mayoral chapter comes to a close, TenHaken has a lot of accomplishments to look back on. 'During the last seven years, I think one of the things I'm most proud of, and this is going to seem really nebulous, is really just keeping the wheels on the bus during a time when the world was kind of falling apart,' said TenHaken. And despite the unknown timing of the next election, TenHaken is looking ahead to what the city's next leader will bring to the table. 'Keeping up with housing, dealing with the challenges of homelessness, ensuring crime stays manageable as we grow. Those are very real challenges. And so, the next mayor is going to have to be a leader, a consensus builder, someone who's run large organizations, large leadership teams, and can unite a community that's increasingly diverse,' said TenHaken. TenHaken doesn't ‘intend' to seek another public office

SIOUX FALLS S.D. (KELO) — In a letter posted on social media, Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken said he will not seek another public office once his mayoral term ends. 'After prayerful thought and discussions with my family, I do not intend to run for another public office at this time and look forward to seeking opportunities in the private sector,' TenHaken wrote. A mother's message after loss He also highlighted various projects that were completed during his time in office, including the building of the public safety training campus and developments in downtown Sioux Falls like Jacobson Plaza. When TenHaken's time as mayor ends, is still not known as city councilors continue to weigh when to place the next city election. 'This does not mean I am walking away from politics. I will certainly stay engaged to help make sure South Dakota elects pragmatic leaders to local and state offices with servant hearts and the best interests of South Dakotans as their priority,' TenHaken said. Inside KELOLAND: Health and wellness

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — On this week's Inside KELOLAND we are focusing on health and the benefits of working out. People in Sioux Falls have the opportunity to join others for a 100-day challenge. The Mayor's Fitness Challenge kicked off its 5th year on April 26th. 'The last four years, we really focused on miles; it was a 100 miles in 100 days is what we encouraged people to do. This year, we are mixing it up a little bit. We are asking people to try and do 100 workouts in 100 days,' Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken said. TenHaken says he hopes the change will encourage more people to get involved. Medical Director for Falls Community Health Dr. Jennifer Tinguely says there are many benefits to exercising. 'Your blood pressure can improve, your cholesterol numbers can improve, you're much less likely to develop a chronic disease like diabetes if you are exercising,' Dr. Tinguely said. Dr. Tinguely says research shows exercise can also benefit your mental health. You can find workout trackers and other resources on the Mayor's Fitness Challenge webpage. Nearly one million people are diagnosed with it every year in the United States. A Sioux Falls woman is sharing her recovery journey after she experienced a blood clot in her lungs. The role of a Doula is expanding in KELOLAND. They provide information, emotional support, and physical comfort to a mother before, during, and just after childbirth. Some insurance plans and even Medicaid help cover the cost of hiring one. A Sioux Falls couple is sharing their experience of having a Doula. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Captain 11 Day in Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) — Seventy years ago, young KELOLAND viewers first cast their gaze upon the man who possessed the wisdom of Solomon and the strength of Atlas. It was March 7th, 1955, when the very first Captain 11 show aired on KELOLAND TV. The program ran until 1996, making it the longest-running children's show in the world. Gov. Rhoden has signed 64 bills, including baby box bill We here at KELOLAND Media Group celebrated the Captain's milestone anniversary Friday. It included a proclamation from the mayor, who was also a longtime viewer of the Captain. 'Captain 11 began on March 7, 1955,' Mayor Paul TenHaken said. A salute to Captain 11 from the mayor of Sioux Falls. 'Do hearby proclaim today, March 7th, 2025 as Captain 11 Day in our great city of Sioux Falls,' TenHaken said. Mayor Paul TenHaken was a part of the Captain's crew as a boy growing up in Worthington, MN. 'I think I was on the show one time and it was a huge deal when we were on the show,' TenHaken said. Generations of kids saw Captain 11 as their hero and role model. 'It was a simpler time. When I think about Captain 11 it was like before we had all the chaos of what kids go through now,' TenHaken. The Captain also traveled the outer galaxies beyond our TV studio. 'He was in every parade, every town's centennial: there was Captain 11. New store openings: there was Captain 11. He was everywhere in our area,' KELOLAND Media Group Director of Marketing & Creative Services Paul Farmer said. KELOLAND Media Group employees paid tribute to the Captain by wearing his yellow crew member t-shirts. But the celebrating doesn't end after today. 'This is a year-long celebration as we celebrate the legacy of Captain 11. So all through 2025, we're going to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Captain 11 in different ways,' Farmer said. After all, one day is far too brief a period to honor the 70 year legacy of the man who was given the power to control time. 'How's my crew today?''Fine!!!' We will be airing a marathon of Captain 11 shows on KELOXTRA this Sunday March 9th from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and then back again from 7-10 p.m. If you've picked up the KELOLAND+ app for Roku, FireTV, and Apple TV, be sure to watch this Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Central Time. Plus, there are three full episodes that you can watch on demand right now. Just page down in the app to the Captain 11 section. A special Inside KELOLAND features the history of the Captain 11 Show. It airs on KELOLAND TV Saturday at 9 a.m. and again Sunday at 10:30 p.m. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
