Georgia gas prices still trending lower

The average cost of gas prices at the pump in Georgia is continuing its downward trend. According to AAA's gas price tracker, the price of a gallon of gas for regular unleaded is down another two cents compared to last week. Month-to-month, it's four cents lower and a full 43 cents lower than last year. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] That means to fill up a 15-gallon gas tank, drivers are paying about $42.90 at the pump. AAA said that was almost $7 less than a year ago for the same refueling effort. 'Remember, we're still at the front end of hurricane season, and a sudden storm could bump up oil prices, causing gas prices to increase.' As far as those oil market fluctuations, AAA said the cost of a barrel of oil had settled at $62.85 as crude inventories fell by 4.3 million barrels over the past week. AAA said the U.S. crude oil inventory is roughly 7% lower than the five-year average for this time of year. This comes as prices across the nation fall and summer driving season continues. While inventories of crude oil are down, AAA also reported that supply in the market is outweighing demand. National gas prices were averaging $3.12 per gallon, according to AAA. Peach Pass fee freeze program ends soon, closing temporary amnesty option for drivers

A program giving Georgia drivers extra time to pay toll amounts is ending soon. The Georgia State Road and Toll Authority said in a recent announcement that their Fee Freeze program ends June 30. According to state officials, drivers who were on Georgia Express Lanes between Sept. 30, 2024 and May 30 who received a violation notice are able to pay just the toll charges, without a violation fee, but only if you make the payment before the end of June. The full toll amount listed on the notice must be paid on or before June 30. Even if paying online or through the mobile app, drivers must still call the Peach Pass office first. 'Fee Freeze payments are not accepted online without prior authorization,' officials said. While the State Road and Toll Authority is reminding drivers to pay what's due, the office is also warning against Peach Pass scams. The Peach Pass program will never send a text message or request payment. Anyone who gets a text message requesting they pay anything is urged to not click any links and delete the messages. Georgia has unique driving laws. Here are 5 traffic rules to know to avoid tickets

You have your ID, you may have your Peach Pass, but before driving through Georgia, you may want to make sure you're up-to-date on the laws. Some of them are obvious, while others are less so. Here's a look at 5 you may not know about: If you want to listen to music on your drive, either use the car speakers or just play it aloud on your phone's speakers. Georgia Code § 40-6-250 says no driver will wear a headset or headphones unless it's for communication purposes. Rechtman & Spevak attorneys say on their website that a violation will mean a $50 fine and one point on your license for a first offense, $100 and two points for a second offense, and $150 fine plus three points for third and subsequent offenses. Lawsuit: Georgia mother sues Uber in connection to 14-year-old daughter's rape case. What we know Laws against drinking and driving don't just apply to conventional vehicles like cars, trucks, and vans. Under state law, bicycles are also considered a vehicle and, as such, you can get a DUI for riding a bicycle while under the influence. Georgia Code § 40-6-391 says first and second convictions result in misdemeanors, a third conviction is a "high and aggravated misdemeanor," and a fourth and subsequent convictions can be considered felonies. These all have various penalties. While there are differing opinions about the safety (or lack thereof) in driving barefoot, there is no law that expressly prohibits it, according to multiple Georgia law firms. If you choose to do so, Hasner Law recommends keeping your shoes away from the driver's side so they don't get caught under the pedals and to be mindful of your driving habits. The law firm goes on to say you could still get into trouble for not wearing shoes if you're in an accident. While speeding is obviously dangerous, it's also a bad idea to drive too slow. Georgia Code § 40-6-184 says drivers are not allowed to travel at such slow speeds they are impeding the normal flow of traffic unless it's necessary for safety reasons. Kohn & Yager Attorneys say on their website that a violation of the "Slow Poke" law can lead to a fine of up to $1,000, three points on your license, increased car insurance premiums, and a potential license suspension. Digital license: Why Georgia lawmakers agree that you could soon use your phone as your driver's license Most people know it's illegal to be on your phone while driving, but will try to answer texts at a red light. Don't! Georgia Code § 40-6-241 prohibits a driver from ever holding their phone or even keeping it propped on their knee. It also specifically prohibits writing or reading messages as well as watching movies/videos. Exceptions include when the car is parked and when reporting an incident. Each violation of this article constitutes a separate offense. Violators will be guilty of a misdemeanor and fined up to $50 for the first conviction, up to $100 for the second, and up to $150 for third and subsequent convictions. Will this week's lunar eclipse be visible over Georgia? See the cloud coverage forecast

Georgians who can stay up late Thursday should go outside. A total lunar eclipse will be at peak visibility over Georgia, but that's assuming the weather is friendly. How's it looking in the Augusta area? Here's what we know: The lunar eclipse will start over the state around 11:57 p.m., according to Time and Date. The partial eclipse will start around 1:09 a.m. Thursday, March 13 and reach its maximum at about 2:58 a.m. Friday, March 14. Toll text scam: Did you get a text from 'Peach Pass?' You're not the only one. What to do to avoid the scam The National Weather Service provided a sky cover forecast map for early Friday. It indicated clear skies for much of Georgia, including the east areas like Augusta and Savannah. During the eclipse, AccuWeather's hourly forecast predicted 26-45% cloud cover, no precipitation, and temperatures around 57-60 degrees. However, the forecast may change as we get closer to Thursday, so stay tuned for important updates. Western parts of the state, including parts of Atlanta down to Columbus, could be in for significant cloud cover during the event. Time and Date says the next total lunar eclipse over Georgia is (technically) in 2026. However, the window isn't as long because residents won't see it until 6-6:30 a.m. depending on where you live and it's close to the horizon, so you would need a clear view to the west. Therefore, practically speaking, the next total lunar eclipse will be in 2029 with the best visibility in Georgia's south and east regions.
