McAteer's Restaurant serves corned beef and potatoes for St. Patrick's Day

FAIRMONT, (WBOY) — McAteer's Restaurant got in the Irish spirit for St. Patrick's Day this year serving things like corned beef, cabbage, and potatoes all day along with decorations and customers all decked out in green. Fairmont resident Larry Koay came with his bagpipe to perform for the restaurant. Owner Tim McAteer told 12 News about his pride in his Irish heritage and about the history of Irish people in north central West Virginia, saying that many Irish people came to work for the railroad in Mannington. He also talked about how the location right across the street from McAteer's was formally an Irish dairy farm that operated for many years. The restaurant's St. Patrick's Day tradition started after McAteer visited Ireland in the 80s and wanted to bring a piece of Ireland back home. McAteer said that north central West Virginia actually reminds him of Ireland. 'If you go to Ireland and you see it, you know why they came here. We have the same green fields, we have the same beautiful structure,' McAteer said. 'It was jobs but then it was also the scenery, and the landscape is just similar.' North Marion High School Marching Band to perform in Pearl Harbor Parade

FARMINGTON, (WBOY) — The North Marion High School Marching Band is set to perform in the Pearl Harbor Parade in December. When the marching band was invited back in November of 2024, Band Director Matthew Morgan jumped at the opportunity for the students to learn about and honor American history, travel to Hawaii, and perform in front of a wide audience. Students compete in statewide robotics competition at Fairmont State Once the school administration gave its approval, the marching band found out about their future performance at their Christmas concert a few months ago. Morgan remembers the shock and excitement from the band students when they were told about the performance. To Morgan's knowledge the only other school from West Virginia who has gotten to perform in Hawaii is Morgantown High School. The marching band is looking to raise somewhere between $80,000-$120,000 for new uniforms and to pay for the trip.
