The PeckPerk Smart Solar-Powered Bird Feeder
Now I must admit that I'm not usually much of a nature lover, but a new product I've been road testing over the past few weeks has me all turned around.
I am now a bird lover, a twitcher if you will, and it's all down to the PeckPerk Smart Solar-Powered Bird Feeder. It's a hi-tech feeder for your garden with a camera that takes video of your feathered friends coming in to have a snack, and share them with you via wifi.
The all-color night vision means you can enjoy 2K UHD clarity at any time. Paired with the (rather basic) mobile app, it will give you real-time alerts to anyone visiting.
Set-up is pretty easy. You are given the tools to fix the teardrop-shaped feeder wherever you like, be that poles, walls, fences, or trees. The shape is inspired by a weaver bird nest and is fronted by a perch styled to look like twigs. A tip on installation, it's best not have too many flowers or anything that moves in the wind within the camera's view as the movement will set it off.
It comes with a small solar panel that keeps the battery topped up. Certainly, during the recent sunny spell, it's been kept at full charge for weeks.
One of the biggest pluses is that it gives you free cloud storage on a rolling basis. You can share the pix to keep them, or even install an SD card for extra backup.
You can spend a few pounds a month to unlock the device's AI-powered bird recognition system that says it can ID more than 10,000 species. To be honest, this is the one feature that didn't work for me, and it was always telling me I wasn't looking at a picture of a bird. Out of the two birds it did identify, it said one was a bird only found in North America which hinted at a US bias. A product support request went unanswered. VIP status will also get you enhanced cloud services.

It also packs a squirrel deterrent system, which emits a warning tone to scare away unwanted visitors, ensuring that only birds access the feed.
Once I had it all set up and filled with bird food it did take a few days of crossed-fingers wondering if any bird was going to show up but after a while they did and we now have several regulars who turn up day-in. day-out.
This has been the most fun, and my children have also got really into bird watching as a result! I'd say despite a few quibbles, the PeckPerk has been one of the most enjoyable tech gadgets I have ever tested.
