Champion education in longhouses, educated Ibans urged

Anyi receives a traditional Iban attire as a memento from the longhouse chieftain (fourth right). SIBU (June 9): Successful and educated members of the Iban community must take the lead in uplifting education standards in their longhouse communities, said Anyi Jana. The Ngemah assemblyman said their achievements should serve as a source of inspiration, particularly to rural students who often face greater educational challenges. He emphasised that those who have succeeded academically should not forget their roots but to give back to the society. 'Parents also play an important role in shaping their children's future,' Anyi said in his speech at a meet-the-people gathering at Rumah Gani Mahi in Kabah, Kanowit on Saturday. He further highlighted that various educational aid schemes have been made available by the state government to assist Sarawak students, particularly those in rural areas. Adding a personal touch, Anyi said he had launched his own initiative to offer incentives to students who perform well in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations. 'This is meant to encourage our children to aim higher and do well in public examinations,' he said. He said students pursuing higher education, including diplomas and degrees, are also being supported through the initiative. Among those present at the event were Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) Ngemah deputy chairman Ramba Resang and PRS Ngemah Youth chief Councillor Stenny Willis. anyi jana education Iban community lead

MP allocates more than RM1mil for Teluk Intan school students since 2023

TELUK INTAN: Teluk Intan MP Nga Kor Ming has disbursed over RM1mil for primary and secondary school students in the constituency since 2023. The Housing and Local Government Minister said the allocation was not only given to students who obtained excellent results in their examinations, but also to assist students from less-affluent families. "The Madani government always protects all groups and races, whether Malay, Chinese, Indian or other races, all are given equal attention. "The cash contributions are allocations from the Teluk Intan MP's Service Centre," he told a press conference after the bursary handover programme to students in the Teluk Intan parliamentary constituency at the Hilir Perak District Education Office here Friday (June 6). Also present was the Perak domestic trade, cooperatives, consumer affairs and kampung baru cina committee chairman, Woo Kah Leong, who is also Pasir Bedamar assemblyman. On Friday's programme, Nga said a total of RM82,000 was allocated to students who obtained excellent results, namely those who scored 11As, 10As and 9As in last year's Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination. - Bernama

Tahfiz students with 10As to receive full scholarships at UniKL, UPTM

AYER KEROH: Tahfiz students who score 10As and above in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) will be offered full scholarships if they pursue further studies at Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) and Universiti Poly-Tech Mara (UPTM). Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he would propose the idea to Mara management in discussions with its chairman, Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, soon. "This 100 percent scholarship has already been implemented by the Mara Education Institute (IPMA) for outstanding students, and for UniKL and UPTM students, we will prioritise tahfiz students this year," he said. "Besides becoming huffaz or Quran memorisers, they will also become professionals after graduation," he said after officiating the Huffaz Graduation and Ulul Albab Excellence Appreciation Ceremony 2025 for Sekolah Menengah Imtiaz Ulul Albab Melaka at Mudzaffar Hotel. Also present were the school's board chairman and member of the Melaka Islamic Religious Council (MAIM), Prof Datuk Dr Mizan Hitam, and Melaka Mufti Datuk Abdul Halim Tawil. A total of 82 students who completed memorising all 30 juz of the Quran last year, along with 46 high-performing SPM students, received certificates of appreciation at the event. Zahid, who is also Minister of Rural and Regional Development, said the National Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Day 2025, to be held at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) from June 11 to 13, will feature new elements. He said these will include electric vehicles (EV), information technology (IT) and e-sports. "We will offer wide-ranging opportunities to potential participants or students at the TVET celebration to view exhibitions and explore the opportunities they can gain by enrolling in TVET institutions across the country," he said. "At the same time, they will also be able to see for themselves the job prospects and salary scales they can expect after graduating from these TVET institutions," he said.

It was informed that the recipients were those who achieved 5As and above in the public examination. 'This marks a significant increase compared to SPM 2023's results, when 77 students achieved this standard with a total incentive of RM30,400. 'This is a proud moment for the school, and a clear sign of continuous improvement – an increase of 15 students, and RM8,100″ said Chieng in his remarks for the SPM 2024 Incentive Presentation Ceremony at SMK Sacred Heart today. The assemblyman said in 2022, he introduced this incentive programme in four secondary schools in his state constituency, including SMK Sacred Heart, with the simple yet meaningful purpose of encouraging academic excellence and rewarding students who strove for success. 'But beyond just the financial support, I hope this initiative serves as a symbol of encouragement, a reminder that every effort matters, and every step you take toward your dreams is worth celebrating.' In this regard, Chieng encouraged the students to continue aiming higher, including pushing their boundaries and believing in their potential. Moreover, he extended his congratulations to SMK Sacred Heart for reaching a remarkable achievement this time, ranking among the top secondary schools in Sarawak for SPM 2024 results. incentives joseph chieng Sibu SMK Sacred Heart SPM

#NSTviral: Top SPM scorers should skip medicine 'if they seek high salary', says surgeon in TikTok post

KUALA LUMPUR: A Penang doctor has warned Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) top scorers not to pursue medicine if their goal is to earn a high income. In a TikTok post that has since gone viral, surgeon Dr Abdul Gafoor Mubarak said that doctors would face limited career prospects in the future as the field becomes saturated. "To those who scored straight As, do not pursue medicine this year. Why? In a few years, the number of doctors in Malaysia will be high. "Prospects of getting a job will be tougher, and the opportunity to specialise will be more difficult. "Not being a specialist usually means you won't earn much," he said in a TikTok post. He said medicine was a good choice when he was younger, as opportunities were vast, sharing that his class had only eight students. He advised the top scorers to pursue fields in Artificial Intelligence (AI), analytics, accounting, actuarial sciences, and finance management if their goal was to earn a high income. The post has since garnered over 179,000 views on TikTok. "My advice is consistent with the times. "For now, and for the next 10 years, the prospects for medicine aren't looking good. Maybe it will change," he lamented in the comments section after the post sparked discourse among netizens. Nonetheless, he encouraged those who were passionate to pursue their dreams. However, user @ecah_lapa opined differently."My Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) teacher always encouraged us to take medicine because Malaysia doesn't have enough specialists. If there are many (doctors) in the future, it's possible to specialise overseas; it's not that difficult. Medicine is important in Malaysia," the user said. Nonetheless, user @sanidehas said that being a doctor was a noble profession and would help people both in the real world and the afterlife.
