Insider shares new details on Steelers, Dolphins blockbuster trade

More details from the Steelers' blockbuster acquisitions of TE Jonnu Smith and Jalen Ramsey have now been revealed. On a recent episode of The Rich Eisen Show, insider Tom Pelissero explained that the Dolphins were almost forced into a player-for-player type trade scenario — as any trade partner would be more willing to take Ramsey's expensive contract if Miami took a high-salary player in return. After trade negotiations with the Rams and Chargers fell through, Pelissero pointed to the perfect scenario that presented itself with Pittsburgh's Minkah Fitzpatrick — but it may have come down to the Pro Bowl tight end: "It just so happened that the Dolphins also had a situation with Jonnu Smith — who happens to be Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith's favorite tight end — where he, too, became available," Pelissero said. "The Steelers had a guy in Minkah Fitzpatrick, who's due $15.5 million this season — his ball production in particular over the last couple of years has not been the same. Minkah is still only 28, but maybe not quite the same player he was the first time around in Miami. "[The Steelers] get a more versatile player, albeit one who's being paid more, in Jalen Ramsey. They think they can do a lot of different things with him, and a bonus out of that trade is they get a guy in Jonnu Smith, who's coming off a productive season in Miami." While some have criticized the Steelers for exchanging aging DBs, one has to wonder — after hearing Pelissero's insight — if Pittsburgh would have even entertained trading Fitzpatrick unless Smith came along as well. The Pittsburgh Steelers are just as informed about Aaron Rodgers' plans as the public is. originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Organized team activities (OTAs) are underway in the Steel City and the Pittsburgh Steelers are still waiting on a decision from the free agent most expect would be their next starting quarterback. Advertisement Four-time league MVP Aaron Rodgers has made an effort to extend his contract decision as deep into the offseason as possible, with mandatory reporting just around the corner. The overwhelming expectation remains that Rodgers will sign with the Steelers, as Pittsburgh may be his best option left from a football standpoint. Most other teams have followed the usual timeline of already bringing in a new quarterback before OTAs so he can get acclimated to his staff, teammates and playbook. The Steelers, however, are still holding out hope. And Rodgers isn't making the process any easier. Because this potential signing is viewed as such a forgone conclusion to some, they suspect that Rodgers has at least had some communication with the Steelers to tell them his timeline or plans... Advertisement But NFL insider Tom Pelissero says otherwise. Speaking on The Rich Eisen Show, Pelissero reports that the Steelers organization has not received word from Rodgers whatsoever about his intentions this offseason. "I have been told that [Rodgers] has not affirmatively told the Steelers that he is coming," Pelissero said. "There's all these signs that he has not affirmatively said, 'Hey, June 9th, book me the ticket, I'm coming in, and I'm going to join this team.' That has not happened as of this point." The franchise and Rodgers have reportedly met multiple times in Pittsburgh earlier this offseason with the Steelers offering him a contract that is still unsigned. Advertisement The closest thing we've gotten to any definitive plans from Rodgers himself was in a Q&A session with a musician friend where he hinted about a team "that might play in Chicago this year on a road trip," ... as in the Steelers and their Week 12 game against the Bears? Wink wink. Other than that? Crickets. If this situation is as annoying to the organization as it is to many of its fans, Pittsburgh could be inclined to move in another direction if they're fed up with waiting. Art Rooney II and the Steelers front office have remained patient ... but that willpower to hold out optimism of him signing can only last so long if there are extended periods of no contact between both parties. Advertisement Ironically, Rodgers has previously said that he doesn't want to be a distraction. But in reality, that's exactly what this is. Brock Purdy Contract Update Reveals Timeline and Value Hint

The San Francisco 49ers and Brock Purdy are due to agree on a contract extension this offseason, as the quarterback enters the fourth and final year of his rookie deal. In 2025, Purdy will currently rake in a $5.34 million base salary which is a large jump up from his less than $1 million base the previous three seasons. The 49ers have benefitted from Purdy being the very last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, and thus one of the cheapest draft contracts money can buy. Advertisement Lucky for Purdy, he has proven his worth over three seasons in the league, already leading San Francisco to a Super Bowl. That rise will earn him a very respectable sum on his next contract. When that will come? It is just as uncertain as it has been all offseason. But there is plenty of time left in the offseason, and we don't discredit San Francisco for taking the time to get things done right. NFL insider Tom Pelissero provided an update on the situation by announcing his projected timeline for the agreement and where it could rank Purdy amongst the rest of the NFL. "Are they within the realm of, hey, if they agree to something right now, it could get done quickly? Yeah, but they're not there just yet," Pelissero said. "I would anticipate it's going to come to a head sometime before the start of training camp, potentially sooner than that. I do anticipate that it's going to be somewhere in the [$50-million-dollar range]." Advertisement Of course, the exact totals remain disclosed, but according to this prediction, a $50 million annual salary would put Purdy just outside the top 10 in QB earnings for this season. Philadelphia Eagles' Jalen Hurts has the 10th highest-paid deal at $51 million a year and Arizona Cardinals' Kyler Murray is 11th with a $46.1 million per season total. Dallas Cowboys signal-caller Dak Prescott remains atop the league with his record-setting $60 million per year contract signed just before last season. Purdy's situation may be relatively foreign compared to some other quarterbacks', as he is just now eclipsing a $5 million salary as a low draft pick. San Francisco still holds major leverage in these negotiations, and has the right to franchise tag him up to two times if they please. Pelissero asserts, however, that a tag shouldn't be necessary. Advertisement He continued: " ... (Purdy), I believe, is going to get paid. I do believe that this gets done. "In terms of the exact timing, we'll see, but I would think, for all parties involved, resolving this before training camp and not having that hanging over everybody's heads would probably be a benefit." The 49ers have not yet had any organized team practice, with their starting date set for May 27. There is quite a bit of time until the situation creates any real uneasiness, but a contract as inevitable as this one can - and should - come sooner rather than later. Tom Pelissero Reveals Vikings' Hard Feelings About Daniel Jones' Departure

The Minnesota Vikings seemingly had their backup plan to Sam Darnold ahead of schedule, signing Daniel Jones midseason after the New York Giants released the former $100 million quarterback. There was a plan to incubate Jones in the system early and have him fill the role that Darnold had a year ago -- competing with first-round pick J.J. McCarthy in training camp. Advertisement However, Jones had other plans. The former No. 6 overall pick signed with the Indianapolis Colts in March, sending the Vikings on a month-long search for a new veteran backup to complement McCarthy. In a May 7 appearance on "The Ross Tucker Podcast,' NFL Network's Tom Pelissero offered insight into a potential falling out between Jones and the Vikings, which has a sense of some hard feelings. Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell reacts before an NFL International Series game against the New Orleans Saints at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Kirby Lee-Imagn Images "It sounded like the Vikings thought Jones was coming back, but they just got the sense late that he was really not convicted about coming back to Minnesota, ended up taking a little bit less in terms of guaranteed money, from the Colts to end up in Indianapolis," Pelissero said. Jones' interest in the Colts' quarterback situation is reasonable. Advertisement Anthony Richardson has struggled in the first two years of his career and was benched last season. Richardson is likely on his last chance in what looks like a more open quarterback competition in Indianapolis. Meanwhile, the Vikings are just entering the McCarthy era, and the 22-year-old quarterback has plenty of runway to win the starting job compared to Richardson. With consideration that there's a clearer path to playing time in Indianapolis, Jones bet on himself and took less guaranteed money. However, the Vikings were seemingly spurned by Jones and, in reaction, pulled their offer, according to Pelissero. Advertisement "You've formed this type of system and environment in which any quarterback coming in has played well," Pelissero said before stating the Vikings' line of thinking. " 'We think we can do different things. If you don't want to be here, we're not going to hold you.' -- so they pulled the offer to Daniel Jones." Jones' departure left a vacuum at the veteran quarterback spot that was filled with a flirtation with Aaron Rodgers for weeks leading up to the draft. The Vikings ultimately shelved conversations with Rodgers, who would only come to be the starting quarterback, and traded back in the fifth round of the draft to land Sam Howell from the Seattle Seahawks. Report: Texans may have been trying to trade up for WR Emeka Egbuka in Round 1

Report: Texans may have been trying to trade up for WR Emeka Egbuka in Round 1 The Houston Texans were rumored throughout Thursday night to be calling teams interested in moving down in the draft. The question most Texans have after seeing the back-to-back AFC South champions move out of the first round altogether was for whom? Was it an offensive tackle? How about a guard like Tyler Booker, who landed with the Dallas Cowboys, but not before it was rumored that the Texans wanted him first before the asking price was revealed. Grey Zabel also remained on the board before landing with the Seattle Seahawks at No. 18. So, who was it? According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, during his interview on The Dan Patrick Show, he thinks the Texans tried to trade up for Ohio State receiver Emeka Egbuka before he went to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at No. 19. "My understanding was that there were two teams both trying to trade up: It was the Texans and the Rams," Pelissero said. "And the moment the Bucs surprised everybody by taking Emeka Egbuka, the receiver from Ohio State, the calls stopped. Those teams were calling all the teams above them and all of a sudden the calls stopped. So that's the belief that Egbuka was the guy." While it's speculation on Pelissero's part, the assumption makes sense when given Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud's relationship with Egubka from their time together in Columbus. Houston also hired former Rams passing-game coordinator Nick Caley, so it also adds up that his style of offense would correlate with Sean McVay's personnel regarding a need for a smooth route-running No. 2 threat with a willingness to block. Now that the Texans have the No. 34 pick following their trade with the New York Giants, options are endless to begin Day 2. While there's a need for an offensive tackle, Missouri's Luther Burden or Iowa State's Jayden Higgins could be an enticing option to kick start the second rouns. Burden was a consensus first-round pick entering the 2024 college season and was expected to be in play for Houston. Perhaps he still is since general manager Nick Caserio mentioned on Thursday night that a player the Texans would have considered at No. 25 was wating to hear his name called. "Whether or not we actually pick the player, we'll see if that actually happens," Caserio said. Entering OTAs, the Texans' receiver room currently consists of Nico Collins, Christian Kirk. John Metchie III, Xavier Hutchinson, Braxton Berrios and Justin Watson. The Texans own five picks in the second and third round.
