Finnish lawmaker dies by suicide in Helsinki parliament building

Eemeli Peltonen, 30, had been in parliament since 2023. The parliament is in its summer recess, but Prime Minister Petteri Orpo suspended all political work on Tuesday as a show of respect. Orpo also held a minute's silence for Peltonen, public broadcaster YLE said. Peltonen was a member of the Social Democrat party. "He was a much-loved member of our community and we will miss him deeply. A young life has ended far too early," Tytti Tuppurainen, chair of the Social Democratic parliamentary group, said in a statement. Parliament speaker Jussi Halla-aho said in a post on X that Peltonen was a "well-liked colleague who was respected across party lines." Police were called to the parliament building in Helsinki on Tuesday morning, and Peltonen's death was confirmed a few hours later in an official parliamentary statement. Police said they suspected no foul play. Peltonen represented the southern region of Uusimaa. At 18, he was elected as a city counselor for the town of Jarvenpaa. When he was 22 he was elected chairman of the city board -- the youngest person to hold the title, media reported at the time. Peltonen posted on his social media accounts in June that he had been "away from a lot of parliamentary work in the last weeks" because he had "a kidney problem" that led to an infection. He explained that he was being treated with "an intravenous antibiotic cure in Meilahti [a Helsinki suburb], which takes its time." "I'm already discharged from hospital, but due to the situation I'm on summer sick leave and I'm now fully focused on recovering from the illness," he wrote. A Finnish politician has been found dead after reportedly committing suicide in the country's parliament, according to local reports. Eemeli Peltonen, 30, a first-term member of parliament for the left-wing Social Democratic Party (SDP), had been suffering from a kidney disease and was on sick leave when he took his own life on Tuesday morning inside Finland's Parliament Building in the capital Helsinki, Finnish outlet YLE reported. Police were called to the parliament just after 11 a.m. on Tuesday after reports that an MP had committed suicide inside the building, and Peltonen was identified later. 'In May, I got good care at Helsinki University Hospital for kidney problems that suddenly appeared in me, which were diagnosed as minimal change disease. 30-Year-Old Finnish MP Dies By Suicide Inside Parliament Building: Report
A Finnish lawmaker on Tuesday allegedly died by suicide inside Helsinki's Parliament House, the local media reported. Eemeli Peltonen, 30, was a member of parliament from Finland's Social Democratic Party. The assembly's communications office, confirming the death of the first-time MP from Uusimaa, said "The person who passed away in the Parliament Building on the morning of August 19 is Eemeli Peltonen, a member of parliament in his first term." Peltonen died around 11 am local time (2 pm IST), Helsinki police said, adding that they "do not suspect crime at this stage, and the case is being investigated." "Emergency medical services, rescue units, and police authorities were alerted to the scene via the emergency center," Aaro Toivonen, Director of Security for the Parliament, said. Earlier in June, Peltonen shared on Facebook that he was undergoing treatment for a kidney disease, due to which he had been absent from parliamentary work during the final weeks of the spring session and took a sick leave over the summer, according to local media. During a press briefing in Kajaani, Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said that "the death of Eemeli Peltonen was very sad news." "Some time ago, we received truly shocking news from Parliament, our shared workplace. One of our colleagues has died in the parliamentary premises," Orpo said, as quoted by Finnish daily Yle Uutiset. Chair of the social democratic parliamentary group, Tytti Tuppurainen, said that Peltonen "was a much-loved member of our community and we will miss him deeply." The Finnish flag was flown at half mast Tuesday outside parliament.
