WRUR programme proves effective bridge between government, people

ALOR GAJAH: The 'Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat' (WRUR) programme is seen as playing a crucial role as a bridge between the government and the people in efforts to resolve various issues and provide for the needs at the grassroots level. Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said the four WRUR series held so far have proven the effectiveness of the programme, with nearly 1,000 public complaints received and the majority of them resolved within two weeks. 'The public is definitely more confident in the existing government's administration and our concern as administrators, as we will also continue to serve the people as best we can. 'With this bridge, namely the WRUR, we can ensure that every need of the public can be addressed... this effectiveness is by the people for the people,' he told reporters here today. He said this after officiating the closing of the Lendu State Legislative Assembly WRUR programme, which was also attended by Lendu assemblyman Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali. Elaborating, Rauf said the achievements of the WRUR programme implementation also encompassed various aspects, including development, education and welfare, based on the complaints that were resolved. He added that this was through various upcoming projects aimed at improving infrastructure, public facilities, road and drainage repairs, flood risk management and public welfare at every WRUR series, including in opposition areas. 'For the Lendu state assembly WRUR, we successfully carried out 145 projects and attended to 269 complaints, of which 183 issues were resolved within two weeks, while the rest are still being addressed. 'This includes an allocation of RM2 million that was announced for the flood retention pond rehabilitation project for the Solok Duku and Durian Daun areas, as well as several other facilities for the local community,' he said. He added that an allocation of RM1.5 million has also been set aside for the upgrading of a shooting range and dormitory for RELA (People's Volunteer Corps) personnel, which are expected to be completed in August. He said that complicated complaints and requests would not be pushed aside, but instead brought to the state government for comprehensive monitoring, scrutiny and coordination. 'The state government will constantly strive to ensure the people benefit directly through initiatives that not only safeguard welfare but also drive economic and social development,' he said.

Immigration Dept to resume migrant repatriation programme on May 19

KUALA LUMPUR: The government will continue its effort to manage undocumented migrants in the country with the resumption of the Migrant Repatriation Programme 2.0 (PRM 2.0). Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the programme will be carried out by the Immigration Department from May 19 this year until April 30, 2026, covering Peninsular Malaysia and the Federal Territory of Labuan. "The PRM 2.0 is a voluntary amnesty initiative for undocumented migrants to return to their home countries without facing prosecution. "Instead, they will be subject to compound fines based on the following offences: RM500 for entering or staying in Malaysia without a valid pass, RM500 for overstaying, and RM300 for breaching pass conditions," he said at a press conference at the Immigration Department's 2024 Excellent Service Award ceremony. Saifuddin said applicants will also be required to pay RM20 for the issuance of a Special Pass. "Foreign children under 18 years of age who had overstayed or entered Malaysia without a valid pass will be exempted from compounds but are still subject to the Special Pass fee," he said. However, Saifuddin said the programme will not apply to individuals who had previously registered under repatriation initiatives but failed to leave the country, as well as those blacklisted by the department, or currently subject to arrest warrants or wanted by the authorities. "For individuals with special legal status, such as spouses of Malaysian citizens who have overstayed, they must report to the Immigration Department's Visa, Pass, and Permit Division for pass coordination," he said. Saifuddin also urged foreign missions, employers, and foreign communities to help spread awareness of the programme and encourage early participation to avoid last-minute congestion before the closing date. He added that the Immigration Department will also double its enforcement efforts against undocumented migrants at hotspots nationwide, calling it the "year of enforcement". "These operations will be conducted jointly with other enforcement agencies such as the police, People's Volunteer Corps (Rela), the National Registration Department and local authorities," he said. Saifuddin also warned employers of stern action if they continue to hire or shelter undocumented migrants, stressing that the government will not compromise in its efforts to eliminate the illegal presence of undocumented migrants. "Employers may be fined up to RM50,000 for each undocumented worker, jailed for up to five years, and face six strokes of the cane if convicted," he said.

Just a tap with MyKad: SARA provides timely relief for Labuan's low-income families

LABUAN: 'Using MyKad makes everything more accessible, especially for people like us who are always budgeting tightly. It's also discreet, nobody has to know you're receiving assistance'. Those are the words of Norlela Jumat, a cleaner and mother from Labuan. Describing the quiet relief brought by the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) initiative, she said that the aid helps fill the financial gap between paydays - a crucial support for her family's day-to-day needs. With monthly credit automatically linked to recipients' MyKad, the assistance can be used directly at selected supermarkets, making the purchase of essential goods faster, easier, and more secure. Nurhidayah Olivia Abdullah, 29, a member of the People's Volunteer Corps (RELA) who relies on irregular income, echoed similar sentiments, saying that since she began receiving the assistance in April, the MyKad system has provided her with the much-needed peace of mind. 'It's been a huge help. I no longer have to worry if I have enough cash for essentials. I just go and scan my MyKad at the counter. The process is usually fast and seamless,' she told Bernama recently. Other recipients, Jamnah Sabah, 48, also a RELA member, said both SARA and the cash-based Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) programme came at the right time for her family. 'For SARA, I appreciate the ease of presenting my MyKad at the store. It saves time, and I don't need to explain or show additional documents; it really helps,' she said. Single father Roslan Idris, 38, who juggles two part-time jobs to support his three school-going children, said that the combination of SARA and STR has helped him stay afloat. 'STR helped with school needs, while SARA ensured my kitchen wasn't empty. The fact that I just use my MyKad at checkout is the best part. No hassle, no extra steps. It makes a difference when you're rushing between jobs,' he said. Meanwhile, Siti Aminah Matdehanan, 44, an office cleaner earning RM1,400 monthly, said the aid has enabled her to consistently provide for her family. 'The MyKad method is straightforward. I don't need to queue at counters for vouchers or cash out benefits, it's just swiped and done. That kind of efficiency matters,' she said. The SARA programme provides additional support to STR recipients classified as poor or hardcore poor under eKasih. This initiative reflects the 'raise the floor' thrust of the MADANI Economy framework, which aims to improve the quality of life for all Malaysians to ensure equitable benefits and opportunities, a decent standard of living and social protection for the rakyat. Under the MADANI Government, SARA's annual assistance has increased to RM2,100 for eligible households registered under the eKasih system, a significant jump from RM1,200 provided last year. From January to March 2025, recipients received RM100 monthly, directly credited to their MyKad accounts. Starting April 1, this amount was increased to RM200, benefiting a broader pool of 5.4 million recipients. On March 24, the government rolled out Phase 2 of STR payments, benefiting 8.5 million recipients, comprising 60 per cent of Malaysia's adults, with aid of up to RM650. This phase involved RM1.7 billion in funds, an increase from RM1.5 billion last year.
