Sindh govt allocates budget for EV taxis, scooters in FY26
The Sindh government has decided to allocate a significant budget in the upcoming fiscal year 2025-26 for the procurement of additional buses and promotion of electric vehicles, including EV taxis and scooters. The decision was taken during a high-level meeting of the Sindh Transport and Mass Transit Department held in Karachi, chaired by Sindh Senior Minister and Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon. The meeting was attended by Secretary Transport Asad Zamin, MD Sindh Mass Transit Authority Kamal Dayo, CEO TransKarachi Fawad Ghaffar Soomro, and other senior officials. A comprehensive review of ongoing and proposed projects, including the Peoples Bus Service and EV scooters initiative, was presented during the meeting. Minister Memon was briefed on the progress of projects undertaken during FY2024-25 and held in-depth discussions on the proposed initiatives for FY2025-26. The Sindh Mass Transit Authority also informed the minister about potential partnerships under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model for launching new bus services. The forum was further informed that the critical segment of the Yellow Line BRT, including the Jam Sadiq Bridge, has been completed and may be inaugurated later this month. Memon instructed concerned authorities to expedite work on the Red Line BRT to ensure its timely completion. Speaking on the occasion, the senior minister said the Sindh government is committed to developing an environmentally sustainable and modern public transport system. 'We are striving to provide affordable and eco-friendly transport options to the public,' he said. He added that more buses are expected to arrive in Karachi soon, and the city will also see the introduction of double-decker buses. 'We've already launched successful initiatives like EV buses and the Peoples Bus Service in Karachi, and we are working to expand this network across the entire province,' he noted. Memon emphasized that the government aims to ensure modern transport services for citizens throughout Sindh. 'Our projects are aimed at streamlining traffic and modernizing the transport system on contemporary lines,' he concluded.

Armed robbers flee with Rs 2.5 million after shooting security guard in Karachi

The incident took place just as Eidul-Fitr approaches, with an uptick in street crimes and robberies in the city. The police were alerted to the incident, and SSP Korangi along with other officers reached the scene quickly. Crime scene investigators were called to collect evidence, and the police gathered CCTV footage from the area. The injured security guard was identified as 35-year-old Amir Ahmed. According to SSP Korangi Tariq Nawaz, the victim, Farhan, was heading to the bank with his friend Basheer and security guard when they were ambushed by three to four armed robbers. The robbers, who were in a white Alto car, stole the Rs 2.5 million and fled after the shooting. The victim stated that the robbers were armed and quickly escaped after the crime. The police have initiated an investigation using technical and human intelligence and conducted geo-fencing of the area. The police are hopeful that within the next 24 hours, they will be able to track down the suspects involved in the robbery. The incident has sparked alarm among transport workers, who are now calling for stricter security measures at bus terminals, particularly during late hours. Last week, armed robbers struck in Karachi's Landhi area, targeting citizens buying milk for Sehri. CCTV footage captured the robbers using weapons to loot mobile phones, cash, and other valuables, according to Express News. The incident occurred at a milk shop in Landhi No. 2 Model Park, with three armed robbers storming the shop and robbing the customers. The robbers, who appeared to have planned the attack, were seen on camera holding up the customers and taking their possessions. Despite the presence of several people at the shop, the robbers managed to escape without facing any resistance. The CCTV footage, which has now gone viral, clearly shows the robbers taking their time while looting the citizens, and then calmly walking away after the crime. The police responded promptly to the robbery report and arrived at the scene shortly afterward. With the help of the CCTV footage, the police have managed to get a clear view of the robbers' faces, and investigations are underway to track down the criminals. The authorities have contacted the victims, who are being asked to visit the police station to file formal complaints.

People's Bus Service to extend hours during Ramadan in Karachi
The Sindh government has announced an extension in Peoples Bus Service operating hours during Ramadan, with buses running until 1 AM from the 15th of the holy month. Sindh Transport Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said the extended hours would apply to key routes, including R1, R2, R3, R4, R9, R10, and EV1. He noted that the decision was taken to address the needs of Karachi residents who rely on public transport. "We understand the challenges faced by commuters during Ramadan," Memon stated. "This initiative aims to provide safer and more convenient travel options, especially after late-night shopping." He reaffirmed the government's commitment to improving public transport and urged citizens to take full advantage of the extended service hours. Moreover, earlier this week, the Sindh government announced a scheme to award free 'pink scooters' to women through a lottery system, aimed at empowering female commuters in the province, Express News reported on Thursday. Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon unveiled the initiative during a press conference in Karachi, highlighting the government's commitment to supporting women's mobility. 'A driving licence is mandatory for women to participate in the scheme,' Memon said, adding that the lucky draw would be held at an open event. The initiative follows the provincial government's launch of the 'Pink Bus' service in 2023, dedicated to female passengers.
