Thunderstorms, snow and more: Severe weather predicted today for the Peoria area
Tuesday's forecast predicted a mild chill and light snow, but the National Weather Service Lincoln is now warning central Illinois residents about possible incoming severe thunderstorms across the area. Peoria, Bloomington, Decatur and other nearby cities, are at an "enhanced risk" for severe weather, with scattered storms likely between 1 and 7 p.m., according to the NWS. Strong winds up to 60 mph are expected, which the NWS advised could cause dust plumes from loose topsoil. Meteorologist Matt Barnes said thunderstorms are already forming in southern Iowa and northern Missouri, moving through the northeast. For Peoria, that means thunderstorms will pass through from approximately 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Barnes said. As the storm increases in intensity, quarter-sized or larger hail and tornadoes are possible, he said. But after 3 p.m., the storm is expected to pass off to the east, bringing in a dry period. Heading into the evening, Barnes said, rain showers are likely, and Peorians may awake to a light accumulation of snow, about one inch, Thursday morning as temperatures dip to around 32 degrees overnight. Barnes said residents should ensure they have a method of receiving updates from the NWS, whether television, social media or radio. More updates may follow. Peoria Area Chamber of Commerce holds its 2025 state legislative luncheon
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — A luncheon was held designed to bring business leaders and state legislators together to discuss local issues. The 2025 State Legislative Luncheon was hosted by the Peoria Chamber of Commerce from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Monday at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel. The panel of elected officials included Senator Li Arellano Jr., Senator David Koehler, Representative Jehan Gordon-Booth, and Representative Travis Weaver The event gave a chance for an off-the-record discussion, so people in attendance could engage with the elected officials and discuss upcoming policies, economic initiatives, and business regulations. 'This event is a crucial platform for fostering meaningful dialogue between lawmakers and business leaders,' Jessica Linder Gallo, the CEO of the Peoria Chamber of Commerce said. 'By facilitating these conversations, we ensure that the voices of Central Illinois businesses are heard and considered in the policymaking process.' State, local lawmakers discuss priorities at annual Legislative Breakfast The lawmakers took turns answering questions on pension funding, the Safe-T Act, infrastructure, debt relief, and the 2025 Illinois state budget. 'The reality is, if we don't get serious about paying down our debt, my kids will be on the hook for that. I don't want that. I want to make smart financially sound decisions today so that in 30 years I can have kids who say, why would I go to Tennessee? I live in Illinois. That's what I want to hear them say. Today, They'd be saying the opposite,' said Representative Weaver. State Representative Jehan Gordon-Booth said the event was a great way to provide transparency about important issues. 'I'm excited to have a real conversation about the things that are most pressing to not just Illinois but most importantly, Peorians and Central Illinoisans. We were able to cover issues from infrastructure to education to taxes to safety, and really doing it in a bipartisan way at times,' she said. Peoria Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Jessica Linder Gallo said the conversation was important to the region's economic stability. 'The biggest takeaway that I'm hearing from business owners as they're leaving is knowing that we have good partners in Springfield and in the statehouse. I think the collaboration across the aisle of our legislators here in central Illinois was showcased and their desire and willingness to help businesses and the entire region thrive.' said Gallo. The Peoria Area Chamber of Commerce collaborated with other local chambers to strengthen the conversation. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. CI Hero: Peoria Reverend leads life of service
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — Epitomizing service while leading and living a life dedicated to Christ. 'The door is open for any and everybody who wants to be saved or to be delivered and there is power in the name of Jesus,' said Rev. Alvin Riley. This week's CI Hero, Reverend Alvin Riley, leads his flock to the word of God at Sovereign Grace Missionary Baptist Church in Peoria. 'My whole goal is I get to turn to the Lord, because I remember my lost soul and I also remember my failures in life,' said Rev. Riley. 'So, when you fail in life, you (then) want to succeed. So I believe in Christ, and being a Christian, and he can turn your life around and put your broken pieces back together.' The reverend received the Tom Connor Service Award at the Peoria Area Chamber of Commerce Thanksgiving Luncheon two months ago. 'I always wanted to be that kind person behind the scenes,' said Rev. Riley. 'I never wanted to be out front. Always liked to do things behind the scenes because God forgives me behind the scenes. He loves me behind the scenes. So, winning such an awesome award like that just made (me) feel joy like I can't describe.' His servant's heart also shines through his work positively impacting Peorians. 'Growing up, my grandfather had a lot of influence of Wednesday night classes teaching me the scripture and so it just became a burning fire in me and I've been doing it ever since,' said Rev. Riley.
