The bargain retailer has pulled the plug on five stores in the last couple of weeks. 'As announced at the capital markets day on March 6, Pepco Group is moving away from fast-moving consumer goods to create a simpler business focused on higher-margin clothing and general merchandise and is actively exploring separation options for Poundland, including a potential sale, from the group,' a spokesperson for Poundland's parent company Pepco Group said. You can see the full list of closures this month below: Chiswick, High Road – closing May 28 Copdock Mill Interchange Ipswich, closed May 20. St George's Centre, Gravesend – closed last week Clapham Junction Station, London – closed May 2 Belle Vale Shopping Centre, Liverpool – closed May 6 Brackla, Wales – closed May 24 In March, Poundland was forced to shut its Belfast branch after the Connswater Shopping Centre was placed into receivership. The store closed its doors at the end of March, following a major closing-down sale. Back in October, residents of Maidenhead were similarly dismayed when their local Poundland branch closed. This came in addition to other closures, including its Sutton Coldfield store on October 5 and the Macclesfield branch last August, the latter closing due to the inability to secure a new lease agreement. WHAT IS GOING ON AT POUNDLAND? It follows reports that up to 200 stores could close as part of a rescue deal of the brand. Gordon Brothers, the ex-owner of Laura Ashley, has become the frontrunner to takeover the bargain chain, which recently announced a wave of store closures across the UK. Walkthrough Poundland's first £1million store Turnaround Investors were linked with a bid for Poundland. These firms specialise in buying up struggling businesses in the hopes of turning them around. Bidding for the business was expected to start this Tuesday. A source told The Sunday Times that Poundland would be priced at "effectively a pound." Several interested parties are reportedly looking at bidding on the UK budget retailer. Further store closures and job losses would come as a blow to the high street. Polish retail giant Pepco said it expects the sale of Poundland to complete by September. Last month, the parent firm is said have hired advisory firm Teneo to oversee the sale of the UK business. Poundland revenues dropped by 6.5% to 985 million euros (£830 million) for the six months to March, compared with a year earlier.

Yet another renowned high street brand is shuttering its doors A MAJOR high street clothing brand, with 500 branches, is closing its bargain store in hours. Locals are mourning the popular home-ware and fashion stores closure complaining that it's 'such a shame.' Advertisement 3 The major brand has been in business for 161 years, founded as a Leeds tailoring business in 1864 Credit: Alamy 3 The announcement follows a wave of other closures in Darlington Credit: Getty Next, it will shut its store in Darlington Retail Park, off Yarm Road, this evening after four years of serving up budget buys. Responding to the news of the closure on social media one shopper said: 'Aw no I love getting the girl's clothes from here.' Another added: 'Such a shame.' But some have argued the store was difficult to navigate. Advertisement One said: "Sometimes I could go in and see loads, other times it was rubbish, very hit and miss." Another added: "I find it quite like a jumble sale, unfortunately." Next has confirmed the store will close tomorrow, 24 May. However, its standard format store in Darlington in the Cornmill centre remains open. Advertisement The brand warned of askew of closures after losing a landmark legal case of equal pay last year. In January, it told shoppers that it might have to hike up prices following the chancellor's increase of employer National Insurance Contributions. Why are so many big shops closing stores? The retailer claimed it would add £67million to its costs. This spells another blow for bargain hunters in Darlington Retail Park after the closure of Home Bargains in recent months. Advertisement The town has also seen furniture shop Studio Eleven and a cheese and wine retailer this year. The news follows a dire start to 2025 for the high street with many established retailers announcing closures. WHSmith is to vanish entirely from town centres following the sale of its high-street branches while fashion retailer New Look has announced plans to shutter nearly 100 locations. Rising inflation and costs, a move to online shopping and the cost of living crisis have contributed to the high street struggling. Advertisement Another struggling chain is Poundland, whose owner Pepco hired advisory firm Teneo to oversee the sale of the business. It came after Pepco said it was looking at "all strategic options" to separate Poundland from its brand.

Penstemon I love this plants genus of because most will flower all summer and autumn. They'll grow in sun or semi-shade in a well drained soil and produce a non-stop display of tubular flowers in an array of colours and colour combination to suit all tastes. Luzula sylvatica 'Marginata' With the evergreen leaves edged with yellow it's great asset is that it will grow in sun or shade in any type of soil and is great as groundcover in the hardest spot to fill - dry shade. Eryngium x zabelii 'Big Blue' A stunning, nectar-rich plant that will feed the beneficial insects in your garden. Leave the flowerheads once they have turned brown because they look stunning with winter frost and snow, extending the plant's interest period. Sarcococca hookeriana 'Winter Gem' If you need winter scent then look no further than this compact, evergreen shrub. The scent is stunning and the evergreen leaves create an excellent backdrop for the summer flowers. Cornus sanguinea 'Anny's Winter Orange' A dwarf version of 'Midwinter Fire' the very colourful stems create a stunning winter display, particularly on sunny days. Rosa 'Noisette Carnee' A very well-behaved climbing rose that is perfect for training over an arch, pergola or gazebo. The small, 'noisette' flowers are blush-pink and produce the most amazing clove scent constantly from June to November. Sanguisorba hakusanensis 'Lilac Squirrel' I've never seen a squirrel with a drooping, shaggy lilac tail, but this variety will give your garden an unusual and different look throughout summer. It does need a moisture retentive soil but will grow in sun or semi-shade.
