No arrests made after Morgantown Police use smoke, PepperBalls to disperse party
MORGANTOWN, (WBOY) — After a video went viral over the weekend of Morgantown Police appearing to use tear gas on a large crowd celebrating St. Patrick's Day, officers say that no arrests have been made and that nobody was taken to the hospital. On Saturday, March 8 at around 2:40 p.m., Morgantown Police officers responded to a residence on North High Street, a location commonly known to house fraternities, after receiving reports of a 'large party with loud music' which was creating 'noise violations.' Former Steelers offensive lineman turned broadcaster Craig Wolfley dies When officers arrived at the scene, they said they told the person operating the music to turn it off to comply with noise regulations. The music was turned off, but once it was, officers said that the crowd 'became aggressive' and began throwing things at them. At that point, 'in an effort to regain control of the area' officers began to use 'standard crowd dispersal techniques' such as inert smoke and PepperBalls—which are non-lethal projectiles that disperse a chemical similar to the kind found in pepper spray. Once 'order was restored in the area,' officers evaluated bystanders to see if any needed EMS, but none did. No arrests were made at the scene, but officers are investigating the incident to further determine 'if any additional enforcement actions should be taken.' WVU officials also told 12 News that multiple citations were issued against students on Saturday in off-campus areas, including six for open container violations and two for noise violations. The Morgantown Police Department was assisted by teams with the University Police Department. This story has been updated to include additional information from WVU officials. APD says protest was mostly peaceful, except for a few ‘agitators'
AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Police Department released a statement Tuesday in response to an immigration protest that happened on Monday night at North Lamar Boulevard and Rundberg Lane. APD said the protests were mostly peaceful, however, a separate group of 'agitators' had thrown rocks at police officers and were driving recklessly, disturbing the peace. During the first gathering at 1:30 p.m., police said in an attempt to detain a driver, a brief pursuit occurred that resulted in the arrest of the individual for reckless driving and impoundment of the vehicle. After this occurred, the organizers asked the crowd to disperse, according to APD. Later at 9 p.m., APD said the agitators returned to the protest area, where a fight then occurred, which prompted another response from police officers. Officers again had rocks and bottles thrown at them which led APD to use PepperBalls. APD said PepperBalls are 'less lethal skin irritants similar to that of pepper spray, in an attempt to prevent further violence.' During the second crowd dispersal, an individual who refused to move out of the street was arrested, according to APD. 'As always, APD respects our community's right to peacefully demonstrate, however, we will not tolerate behavior that puts our community and officers in danger,' a statement from APD said.
