Pi Day, the one-of-a-kind math holiday, is Friday, March 14, giving people a chance to nerd out and enjoy baked goods or pizza. The special holiday celebrates the mathematical constant pi (π), which is approximately 3.14. However, since Pi represents the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter, it is an irrational number, meaning it has an infinite amount of digits. While we currently know more than 105 trillion digits of Pi, only a few decimal places are used regularly. According to Live Science, scientists with NASA use about 15 decimal places to calculate planetary travel. Pi Day was first celebrated in 1988 by physicist Larry Shaw at the San Francisco Exploratorium. Congress designated it an official holiday in 2009.
