BONGAWAN: The Sabah Fisheries Department (JPS) is urged to consider issuing Perahu Bagang (PB) licences for coastal areas in Bongawan and Membakut. Bongawan Assemblyman Dr Daud Yusuf said he was informed that only Permanent Bagang (BT) licences are currently being approved, while the use of PBs is not permitted on the grounds that it interferes with commercial shipping routes. However, he explained that the proposed PB operations would be located within the existing BT zones—not within shipping routes, which are situated far offshore near Pulau Tiga, approximately 30 kilometres from the coast. 'The use of PBs is important as a replacement for existing BT structures, which clearly do not last long. After a few years, they collapse due to strong waves and unpredictable weather conditions,' he said. Subscribe or LOG IN to access this article.
