PKR needs Nurul Izzah's winning formula for GE16
IPOH: PKR deputy presidential candidate Nurul Izzah Anwar is seen as crucial to the party's top leadership as it prepares for the 16th general election (GE16). PKR Deputy Information Chief Datuk Seri R. Ramanan said Nurul Izzah's leadership was instrumental in PKR's historic performance during the 14th General Election (GE14), when the party secured 47 parliamentary seats, the highest in its history. "So her track record is proven. The highest number of seats Parti Keadilan Rakyat has ever won was 47, during GE14, when Nurul Izzah was the election director. "So if this time around Nurul Izzah becomes deputy president and also takes on the role of election director, I think we could even win 70 or maybe 80 seats," he told reporters after meeting 22 out of 24 Perak PKR division leaders here today. Ramanan, who is also the entrepreneur development and cooperatives deputy minister, said Nurul Izzah's potential return to a key leadership role, including a possible bid for the deputy presidency, could significantly strengthen both PKR and the unity government under the Madani framework ahead of GE16. For the record, PKR won 31 seats in the 15th general election. "But if we let the current trend continue, we might drop from 31 seats to just 19. "That's why we need Nurul Izzah to return and help lift the party again. "It's not that the party is weak. We just need her back, and the formula she used to win us those 47 seats. "We need that formula to push us to 70," said Ramanan, who is contesting the vice-president post. When asked if he officially endorsed Nurul Izzah's candidacy for the party's deputy presidency, Ramanan was unequivocal. "I support Nurul 100 per cent, actually, 101 per cent. "I have no other stance. I'm not playing both sides, not jumping between camps. I'm with one camp only, and that's because of her performance. "It's a track record. It's not about favouritism. I'm not that type, and I've been in politics for a long time. "But the main point I want to highlight today is that I want the party to win more seats. "I want a stronger party. "Now, if she takes the role of deputy president while we are the government, just imagine how many more seats she could deliver, and the kind of spirit she could instil in party members to work harder," he said. The Sungai Buloh member of parliament also urged grassroots members to make wise choices ahead of the party elections, cautioning against attempts to mislead or confuse. "My advice to the grassroots members is this, choose wisely. I have to say it, choose wisely. "Don't let yourselves be misled. "Sometimes in politics, when people can't convince, they start to confuse (others). "So stop confusing (people) and try to convince instead. Don't resort to confusion just because you fail to convince," he said.

The 2024 and 2025 PKR annual congress will be held from May 21 to 24. Penang PKR deputy chairman Datuk Dr Mohamad Abdul Hamid said the state PKR, along with its Youth and Women wings, stood in solidarity with state chairman Nurul Izzah, describing her as a symbol of reform and regeneration within the party. However, in light of the current political landscape, we fully back her if she intends to contest the deputy presidency. "Nurul Izzah's candidacy is not only about celebrating talent within the party, but also a crucial step toward revitalising the party as it prepares for the 16th General Election. "She has the background, experience and integrity to lead. With 15 years in Parliament, having represented Lembah Pantai and Permatang Pauh, and serving as Senior Economic and Financial Advisor to the Prime Minister in 2023, she is more than qualified," he said in a statement. Describing her as the "Puteri Reformasi" (Princess of Reform), Mohamad said Nurul Izzah had withstood numerous trials in her political journey, showing resilience and commitment to party values. "With the nation facing multifaceted political, social and economic challenges, PKR needs a leadership that connects with grassroots members and strengthens the party from the ground up," he said. Nurul Izzah, 44 years old, is the daughter of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and has served as a Member of Parliament. Anwar is also PKR president. Nurul Izzah vying for PKR No. 2 would spark more open, healthy contests for top posts, says youth leader
PETALING JAYA: A proposal for Nurul Izzah Anwar to contest the PKR deputy presidency has received support from a party youth leader who sees it as a catalyst for more open, healthy competition for top leadership positions. Johor PKR Youth vice-chief Muhammad Faezuddin Mohd Puad said Nurul Izzah's candidacy would offer the grassroots a fresh choice and would have a positive effect on democracy within the party. "With the involvement of current deputy president Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, this year's elections will be more competitive," Sinar Harian quoted him as saying on Tuesday (May 6). "The presence of Nurul Izzah will make the contest more open and progressive, and reflective of the political maturity within the party." He added that Nurul Izzah would bring a combination of the younger generation's idealism as well as her experience as a party leader and people's representative since the early days of the Reformasi movement. "She has not only been a symbol of Reformasi since 1998, but is a leader with principles and integrity who is close to the people. "She has been vice president and held various key portfolios in the party and government," he said. Faezuddin, who is also Pulai PKR chief, said Nurul Izzah's candidacy would also indicate PKR's commitment to the women's empowerment agenda and bring inclusivity to the highest echelons of its leadership. "PKR has always been a meeting point for different voices and backgrounds. This time, the competition is not only about individuals, but about the direction of the party in the face of great political challenges," he said. Meanwhile, Perak PKR has also thrown its support behind Nurul Izzah Anwar's candidacy for deputy president in the party's upcoming election. Perak PKR information chief Azam Afandi said the party needed a leader who could enhance ties between PKR's founding generation and the new generation. He said with her experience as a former party vice-president, two-term MP, human rights activist and campaigner for good governance, Nurul Izzah has the values and vision that are essential in leading the party. Azam said the prime minister's daughter is also capable of instilling values such as moderation, firm principles and progressive thinking. He said this will inject new spirit into PKR apart from strengthening ties between the party and its partners in the unity government. 'Her candidacy is not just about her personality or factors related to legacy. It is a matter of PKR's future as a party that is relevant and trusted by the people,' he said. Earlier, Nurul Izzah announced that she would contest a vice-presidential position in the party. The PKR deputy president's post is currently held by Economic Affairs Minister Rafizi Ramli, who has indicated he would defend it in the PKR elections this month. Earlier, another division leader had urged Rafizi not to defend the post but make way for Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail instead. The PKR central leadership elections are scheduled for May 24, with the contests for several positions, including the deputy presidency, being watched closely by analysts. Nurul Izzah had previously stated that she intended to run for a vice-president's post, to which she was appointed after skipping PKR's 2022 elections. The daughter of party president and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, she was Lembah Pantai MP from 2008 to 2018 and Permatang Pauh MP from 2018 to 2022. In the party's division-level elections last month, she was returned unopposed as Permatang Pauh chief.

Perak PKR information chief Azam Afandi said Nurul Izzah, the daughter of party president Anwar Ibrahim, was no stranger to the party's struggles and had proven her grit and principles through the years. He said the PKR vice-president also had the vision and values that the party needed to face future challenges, Utusan Malaysia reported. 'This is not a question of personality or heritage. It is about PKR's future as a party that is relevant and trusted by the people. 'In our increasingly challenging political environment, we need leaders who can become a bridge between the founders of the Reformasi movement and the new generation who will inherit this struggle,' he said.
