Govt mulls extending FLYsiswa to land transport in peninsula
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Akademi Kenegaraan Malaysia is looking into expanding the Perdana Fellow programme for youths. PETALING JAYA : The government will discuss the possibility of expanding its FLYsiswa initiative, which provides subsidised flight tickets, to include land transport for students in Peninsular Malaysia, says Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Bernama reported him as saying the annual initiative by the transport ministry could potentially be implemented for specific journeys or destinations within the peninsula. 'FLYsiswa is (currently) focussed on Sabah and Sarawak because we all know flights to those states are expensive, especially during festive seasons … so we decided to offer assistance. 'As for FLYsiswa in the peninsula, I'll discuss it with transport minister Loke Siew Fook. Perhaps we can look into implementing it for certain areas or specific locations,' he said at the 'Temu Anwar' programme at the Management and Science University in Shah Alam today. He was responding to a participant who suggested the government extend FLYsiswa to cover land transport for students in Peninsular Malaysia. FLYsiswa subsidises flight tickets for public university, polytechnic and community college students, as well as matriculation and teacher training institute students, for domestic routes between Peninsular Malaysia, and Sabah, Sarawak or Labuan. Separately, Anwar said Akademi Kenegaraan Malaysia is looking into expanding the Perdana Fellow programme, creating more opportunities for youths to gain experience from national leadership. He said the government views the programme, introduced 10 years ago, as the best platform for students to understand the government's direction and work culture at the highest level, while also preventing them from being influenced by baseless accusations against the administration. 'We will discuss how to give those who are unable to join the Perdana Fellow Programme other opportunities to engage with and learn from government leaders, ministers and deputy ministers. 'This is being managed by the academy and other relevant parties to allow more youths to gain knowledge about the administration and its work culture,' he said.

SHAH ALAM: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the government plans to expand the Perdana Fellow Programme for university students, with a new model being developed by Akademi Kenegaraan. He said the expansion would provide more opportunities for young people to gain experience and insight from national leaders through direct involvement. "We will discuss ways to ensure that those who do not get the opportunity to join the Perdana Fellow Programme are given other avenues to meet and learn from government leaders, ministers and deputy ministers," he said. "This matter is being managed by Akademi Kenegaraan and other relevant bodies so that more young people can gain exposure to public administration and work culture." Now in its tenth year, the Perdana Fellow Programme serves as a platform for young Malaysians to gain a deeper understanding of national policy and governance.

He believes the programme also helps future national leaders better understand government policies. Some 4,000 students participated in today's Temu Anwar programme, his first with a private university. It was also attended by Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapha Sakmud, MSU vice-chancellor Prof Puan Sri Dr Junainah Abd Hamid and MSU president Tan Sri Dr Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid.
