Gov't Mulls Extending FLYSiswa To Land Transport In Peninsula
SHAH ALAM, May 5 (Bernama) -- The government will discuss the possibility of expanding the FLYSiswa initiative, which provides subsidised flight tickets, to include land transport for students in Peninsular Malaysia, said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The Prime Minister said the annual initiative by the Ministry of Transport could potentially be implemented for specific journeys or destinations within the peninsula.
'Why is FLYSiswa focused on Sabah and Sarawak? Because we all know flights to those states are expensive, especially during festive seasons … so we decided to offer assistance.
'As for FLYSiswa in the peninsula, I'll discuss it with the Transport Minister (Anthony Loke). Perhaps for certain areas or specific locations, we can look into implementing it,' he said at the 'Temu Anwar' programme at the private Management and Science University (MSU) here today.
He was responding to a participant who suggested the government extend FLYSiswa to cover land transport for students in Peninsular Malaysia.
The FLYSiswa initiative provides subsidies for flight tickets for public university students, polytechnic and community college students under the Ministry of Higher Education, as well as matriculation and teacher training institute students under the Ministry of Education, for domestic routes between Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan.
Meanwhile, Anwar shared that the Akademi Kenegaraan Malaysia is developing a suitable programme to expand the Perdana Fellow Programme, creating more opportunities for youth to gain experience from national leadership.
The Prime Minister said the government views the programme, introduced 10 years ago, as the best platform for students to understand the direction and work culture of the government at the highest level, while also preventing them from being influenced by baseless accusations against the administration.
'We will discuss how to give those who are unable to join the Perdana Fellow Programme other opportunities to engage with and learn from government leaders, ministers and deputy ministers.

He warned that attracting new investors would be challenging in the current climate, noting that while existing investors in Malaysia remained committed, newcomers were showing hesitation. But the ones that have not committed are now thinking (whether to invest or not),' he told reporters during the regional launch of the Asean Economic Community Strategic Plan 2026–2030. He also said it was becoming increasingly difficult to make projections on investments. 'When we have discussions with companies, we understand their concerns. Many (investors) are adopting a wait-and-see approach due to the dynamic geopolitical situation, especially between the US and China. 'New companies looking to invest want to assess the global situation first,' Tengku Zafrul added. When asked about Malaysia's RM89 billion in approved investments in the first quarter of the year – up 3.7% from the same period last year – Tengku Zafrul said it was 'pleasantly surprising' given typical first-quarter sluggishness. 'In terms of foreign investment, it is almost 70% of the investment. And at the same time, we see that the biggest sector is services, especially the digital economy,' he added. Tengku Zafrul is expected to travel to Washington on June 18 to continue negotiations over the US tariffs imposed on Malaysian goods. He said the Malaysian government hopes to persuade Washington to reduce import duties for certain sectors to below 10%. Hawana 2025 celebration kicks off tomorrow, over 1,000 local and foreign media practitioners expected to attend
KUALA LUMPUR: The National Journalists' Day (Hawana) 2025 celebration, to recognise the role and contributions of media practitioners in the development of the country, will kick off on Friday (June 13) at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL). Organised by the Communications Ministry with the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) as the implementing agency, this fifth edition which runs until Sunday is themed "Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics". The celebration's curtain raiser will be the Hawana 2025 Carnival, which will take place in the atrium of Sunway Putra Mall from 10am to 10pm, with Communications Ministry deputy secretary-general (Telecommunications Infrastructure) Mano Verabathran officiating at the opening ceremony at 3pm tomorrow. There will be 20 exhibition booths including those by Bernama TV, Bernama Radio, Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), Astro, Media Prima Bhd, The New Straits Times Press Bhd, Media Selangor Sdn Bhd, TV Al-Hijrah, Vanakkam Malaysia, MYTV, the Department of Information (JaPen), and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). Several private companies such as UDA Holdings Bhd, MK Curtain, travel company and the See Hua Group are also participating in the Hawana 2025 Carnival, which aims to attract 5,000 visitors.
