Hawana 2025 celebration kicks off tomorrow, over 1,000 local and foreign media practitioners expected to attend
Organised by the Communications Ministry with the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) as the implementing agency, this fifth edition which runs until Sunday is themed "Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics".
The celebration's curtain raiser will be the Hawana 2025 Carnival, which will take place in the atrium of Sunway Putra Mall from 10am to 10pm, with Communications Ministry deputy secretary-general (Telecommunications Infrastructure) Mano Verabathran officiating at the opening ceremony at 3pm tomorrow.
There will be 20 exhibition booths including those by Bernama TV, Bernama Radio, Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), Astro, Media Prima Bhd, The New Straits Times Press Bhd, Media Selangor Sdn Bhd, TV Al-Hijrah, Vanakkam Malaysia, MYTV, the Department of Information (JaPen), and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
Several private companies such as UDA Holdings Bhd, MK Curtain, travel company SelamatBercuti.com, and the See Hua Group are also participating in the Hawana 2025 Carnival, which aims to attract 5,000 visitors.
Meanwhile, the Hawana 2025 Media Forum will take place on Saturday at the Tun Hussein Onn Hall, WTCKL, at 9am, discussing the topic "Malaysian Media Council: Regulator or Media Protector?' before continuing with a technology sharing session titled "AI & Media: Tool, Threat or Opportunity?'
The forum, co-organised by the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI), also serves as a platform for the Protem Committee of the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) to present their views on the future of the media following the approval of the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) Bill 2024 in Parliament in February.
The highlight of Hawana 2025 on Saturday will certainly be the inauguration of the celebration by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the Dewan Merdeka WTCKL.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Dr Zaliha Mustafa, and Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching are also expected to attend.
Also expected to attend are Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa; Bernama chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who is also the Hawana 2025 Project director, as well as the top management of media companies in the country.
At the event, the Prime Minister is expected to present the Tabung Kasih@Hawana contributions to veteran journalists in need of assistance, as well as to award prizes to the winners of the Pesta Pantun Hawana-Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, which was held for the first time on May 31.
This year's Hawana celebration will also witness the presentation of the Hawana 2025 Award and Hawana 2025 Special Award to individuals who have made significant contributions not only in the field of journalism but also in shaping public minds through their works.
To further enliven the Hawana 2025 celebration, two well-known local singers, Dayang Nurfaizah and Anuar Zain, will also be performing.
The Hawana 2025 celebration continues throughout the year with media sports events that highlight traditional elements and a series of tours to premier polytechnics in Selangor, Perak and Johor.
A total of 79 strategic partners, an increase from 44 last year, have sponsored and contributed to the success of Hawana 2025, thus proving that Hawana is now garnering attention not only from government departments and agencies but also from corporate companies.
May 29 was gazetted as National Journalists' Day in conjunction with the publication of the first edition of the "Utusan Melayu" newspaper on May 29, 1939, to celebrate the contributions of industry players who serve as a medium for shaping an informed society.
To further add to the Hawana 2025 celebration, promotional banners have been installed along several highways including PLUS, MEX, as well as major roads around the capital, not to mention displayed on LED screens. - Bernama

Pahang Introduces Malaysia's First Prebiotic Rice
TEMERLOH, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- Pahang has become the first state in Malaysia to produce prebiotic rice, marketed under the brand name Beras Pahang. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail said the rice differs from other local varieties as it offers multiple benefits. 'Beras Pahang has its uniqueness. It is a prebiotic rice, low in sugar, and suitable for those with diabetes. 'It has already entered the market in limited quantities. For now, we are prioritising sales in Pahang before distribution in other states,' he told reporters after opening the Pahang Mini MAHA 2025 at Dataran Temerloh here today. Cultivated in the Ganchong paddy fields in Pekan, the rice is said to be tastier, more fragrant and softer, while its prebiotic content supports digestion and overall bowel health. At the event, Beras Pahang was offered at RM8 per kilogramme. Commenting on the inaugural Pahang Mini MAHA 2025, Wan Rosdy said it will be held at different locations each year following an overwhelming response, with over 80,000 visitors recorded today. Meanwhile, citing the Malaysian Agriculture Census interim report released by the Department of Statistics Malaysia, he said Pahang has proven its capability as the country's second-largest contributor to the agriculture sector, after Johor, with sales worth RM25.12 billion. Of that amount, he said 88 per cent came from the crop subsector, proving Pahang's fertile land and the hardworking spirit of its people.

Malaysia Records 1.8 Million Chinese Tourist Arrivals In First 5 Months
Nearly 1.8 million visitors from China travelled to Malaysia between January and May this year, following the government's decision to introduce a visa waiver for Chinese nationals. Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan said the policy, which took effect in 2024, had driven a sharp rise in arrivals, from 1.6 million in 2023 to 3.4 million last year. 'Among these efforts, we invited more than 100 imams from China and Europe to experience first-hand Malaysia's Muslim-friendly tourism concept, which is suitable for people of all backgrounds and religions,' he told the Dewan Rakyat during the oral question-and-answer session today. He was replying to Datuk Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik (PH–Balik Pulau), who had asked about the ministry's measures to attract Muslim tourists from China. Khairul Firdaus added that the ministry, together with the travel agency association, was actively pursuing promotional campaigns targeting Chinese tourists, particularly those seeking Muslim-friendly experiences. In response to a separate question from Wan Hassan Mohd Ramli (PN–Dungun) on ensuring the east coast states also benefit economically, the deputy minister said integrated promotions were being undertaken via Tourism Malaysia and the Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC). These, he said, highlighted attractions such as the Crystal Mosque to audiences in ASEAN, Europe, China, Japan and South Korea. 'However, it is also closely linked to the culture of the local community and when we are able to promote these elements, it will create spillover benefits for industries such as homestays, handicrafts and traditional foods,' he said.

Jalur Gemilang: Don't take the law into your own hands
KUALA LUMPUR: The public has been urged not to take the law into their own hands or engage in unlawful acts against anyone committing offences related to the Jalur Gemilang flag, says Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He said that all matters involving investigations, prosecutions, and court decisions must be left entirely to the authorities, following a reminder issued by the Attorney-General's Chambers (A-GC) yesterday. "Do not act as the police, lawyers, or judge. It is wrong. Leave it to the police to investigate, the A-GC to prosecute, and the courts to decide," he said after launching the Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya-level National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang Flag 2025 campaign at Institut Pendidikan Guru (IPG) Kampus Bahasa Melayu today. The launch was also attended by Communications Ministry deputy secretary-general (strategic communications and creative industry) Nik Kamaruzaman Nik Husin; Information Department director-general Julina Johan; and IPG Kampus Bahasa Melayu director Dr Masitah Mohammad Yusof. Fahmi said that some people had been called in by the police following a rally held to "teach" certain parties a lesson, but further action would be handled solely by the authorities. He said Malaysians should address issues related to the Jalur Gemilang respectfully and constructively. "As Malaysians, we can also play our part. If we see a Jalur Gemilang that has fallen, we should raise it. If it is faded, replace it with a new one. If it is improperly flown, correct it ourselves. Let us not sneer, curse, or act uncivilly. We must demonstrate our patriotic spirit during the national month while reminding one another of proper conduct," he added. Fahmi said that the programme included the Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya-level Merdeka Jalur Gemilang Convoy, comprising 73 vehicles from the Communications Ministry's departments and agencies, the police, Fire and Rescue Department, Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN), National Security Council (MKN), Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), Suzuki V-Strom Malaysia motorsports club, Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), and the Lembah Pantai Madani Community. Additional side events included the Safe Internet campaign, aimed at raising awareness of ethical online practices among teacher training institute students.
