RTM's Hawana booth builds connection with deaf community
Hands on: Lee demonstrating her sign language skills at RTM's booth at the Hawana 2025 Carnival, Sunway Putra Mall. — Bernama KUALA LUMPUR: The RTM booth at the Hawana 2025 Carnival offers an interactive sign language learning session, providing visitors with an opportunity to better understand and connect with Malaysia's deaf community. RTM sign language interpreter Tan Lee Bee said the initiative not only provides visitors with an opportunity to learn sign language, but also exposes them to the unique culture of the deaf community. 'The public can come and learn sign language. For anyone or broadcasting station with interest, they can start by taking a basic course, followed by training and interacting with the deaf community to better understand their communication culture. 'Over time, they will become more skilled and have the potential to become sign language interpreters like me,' she said when met at Sunway Putra Mall here yesterday, Bernama reported. Lee said mastering sign language is not just about memorising hand gestures, but rather requires a deep understanding of the facial expressions, body language and communication culture of the deaf, which differs from the general public. 'To be a good interpreter, one has to be close and familiar with the deaf community. From there, we can understand how they communicate more accurately and convey the true meaning through signs. 'Maybe one day, we can broadcast news delivered by deaf individuals themselves using sign language. Who knows, the time will come for TV stations to feature news presenters from this community,' she said. The Hawana 2025 Carnival, taking place for three days since Friday, is part of this year's National Journalists Day (Hawana) celebration, which was held at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre. The Hawana 2025 celebration, organised by the Communications Ministry with Bernama as the implementing agency, aims to recognise the role and contribution of media practitioners in the country's development.

Hawana 2025 Carnival gives public a taste of journalism
KUALA LUMPUR: The final day of the Hawana 2025 Carnival at Sunway Putra Mall ended on a lively note, as visitors took the opportunity to learn more about journalism. One of them, Nurimshah Muhammad Yaseen, 20, said her interest in the field, particularly in becoming a news presenter, inspired her to attend the three-day carnival. "So far, I have only seen journalists on television, but this time I got the chance to experience what it's like to report on an actual incident, the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) bus accident incident, at the Bernama Radio and Media Prima booths," she told Bernama. She said that she also had the chance to audition for an acting role at the RTM booth, describing the experience as meaningful and unforgettable. Having recently completed her diploma in software, Nurimshah expressed hope that programmes like this would continue to be organised annually, as they help bring the public closer to the real world of journalism and media. Another visitor, Ismail Mohd Azlan, 49, said the carnival provided the best opportunity for the public to get to know the role of the media. "Usually, we only see artiste performances at shopping malls, but this time, we saw mini news and radio studios brought here. It provided exposure and thus attracted the public's interest in journalism. "Carnivals like this are good for bringing the public closer to journalists. Visitors can also ask directly about how to channel complaints to journalists about local issues and problems," he said. Ismail, who is a technician, said that the visit to the Selangor Media booth also opened his eyes to the existence of newspapers under the Selangor government. He said such a carnival should continue so that the public can obtain information directly from media agencies about the products and services offered. The Hawana 2025 Carnival, being held for three days since Friday, is part of this year's National Journalist Day (Hawana) celebration, with the culminating ceremony held yesterday and officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre (WTCKL). National Journalists' Day 2025 to focus on AI and ethics
KUALA LUMPUR: The National Journalists' Day (Hawana) 2025 celebration, to celebrate the contributions of media practitioners to the country, will kick off today at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL). Organised by the Communications Ministry and the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), the fifth edition of Hawana which runs until Sunday is themed 'Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics'. The celebration will start with the Hawana 2025 Carnival, which will take place at the Sunway Putra Mall and launched by Communications Ministry's deputy secretary-general (Telecommunications Infrastructure) Mano Verabathran. There will be 20 exhibition booths including those by Bernama TV, Bernama Radio, Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), Astro, Media Prima Bhd, The New Straits Times Press Bhd, Media Selangor Sdn Bhd, TV Al-Hijrah, Vanakkam Malaysia, MYTV, Information Department (JaPen), and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Bernama reported. Several private companies such as UDA Holdings Bhd, MK Curtain, travel company and the See Hua Group are also participating in the Hawana 2025 Carnival, which aims to attract 5,000 visitors. Meanwhile, the Hawana 2025 Media Forum will take place today at the Tun Hussein Onn Hall, WTCKL, at 9am, with the topic 'Malaysian Media Council: Regulator or Media Protector?' before continuing with a technology sharing session titled 'AI & Media: Tool, Threat or Opportunity?' The forum, co-organised by the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI), also serves as a platform for the protem committee of the Malaysian Media Council to present their views on the future of the media following the passing of the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) Bill 2024. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will launch Hawana 2025 together with Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Dr Zaliha Mustafa and Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching. Also expected to attend are Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Bernama chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who is also Hawana 2025 project director, as well as the top management of media companies in the country. This year's Hawana celebration will also witness the presentation of the Hawana 2025 Award and Hawana 2025 Special Award to individuals who have made significant contributions in the field of journalism. Hawana 2025 continues throughout the year with media sports events that highlight traditional elements and a series of tours to premier polytechnics in Selangor, Perak and Johor. May 29 was gazetted as National Journalists' Day in conjunction with the publication of the first edition of the Utusan Melayu newspaper on May 29, 1939, to celebrate the contributions of industry players who serve as a medium for shaping an informed society.

Hawana 2025 celebration kicks off tomorrow, over 1,000 local and foreign media practitioners expected to attend
KUALA LUMPUR: The National Journalists' Day (Hawana) 2025 celebration, to recognise the role and contributions of media practitioners in the development of the country, will kick off on Friday (June 13) at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL). Organised by the Communications Ministry with the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) as the implementing agency, this fifth edition which runs until Sunday is themed "Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics". The celebration's curtain raiser will be the Hawana 2025 Carnival, which will take place in the atrium of Sunway Putra Mall from 10am to 10pm, with Communications Ministry deputy secretary-general (Telecommunications Infrastructure) Mano Verabathran officiating at the opening ceremony at 3pm tomorrow. There will be 20 exhibition booths including those by Bernama TV, Bernama Radio, Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), Astro, Media Prima Bhd, The New Straits Times Press Bhd, Media Selangor Sdn Bhd, TV Al-Hijrah, Vanakkam Malaysia, MYTV, the Department of Information (JaPen), and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). This year's Hawana celebration will also witness the presentation of the Hawana 2025 Award and Hawana 2025 Special Award to individuals who have made significant contributions not only in the field of journalism but also in shaping public minds through their works. To further enliven the Hawana 2025 celebration, two well-known local singers, Dayang Nurfaizah and Anuar Zain, will also be performing. The Hawana 2025 celebration continues throughout the year with media sports events that highlight traditional elements and a series of tours to premier polytechnics in Selangor, Perak and Johor. A total of 79 strategic partners, an increase from 44 last year, have sponsored and contributed to the success of Hawana 2025, thus proving that Hawana is now garnering attention not only from government departments and agencies but also from corporate companies. May 29 was gazetted as National Journalists' Day in conjunction with the publication of the first edition of the "Utusan Melayu" newspaper on May 29, 1939, to celebrate the contributions of industry players who serve as a medium for shaping an informed society. To further add to the Hawana 2025 celebration, promotional banners have been installed along several highways including PLUS, MEX, as well as major roads around the capital, not to mention displayed on LED screens. - Bernama
