SAA secretary resigns amid fighting by two factions
KUALA LUMPUR: K. Narayhanasaamy resigned as the Selangor Athletics Association (SAA) honorary secretary yesterday due to infighting between two factions in the association. Narayhanasaamy said in his resignation letter: "I have carried out all the tasks entrusted by the leadership in accordance with the SAA management code of conduct (2023) without fail and faithfully for the good of the association. "However, lately my work as the secretary of SAA has been disrupted by the leadership, which has violated the integrity of the governance of SAA (2023) and myself. "Therefore, before I am linked to issues that could undermine my credibility, I hereby decide to resign as secretary effective July 24, 2025," said Narayhanasaamy. Narayhanasaamy was appointed by SAA president Nurhayati Karim as the honorary secretary of SAA in 2023 with the unanimous support of affiliate members from nine districts in the first general meeting of SAA which was held on Jan 7, 2024. However, infighting between two factions in the SAA resulted in six disgruntled district presidents slapped with lifetime bans. But they are taking SAA president Nurhayati and vice-president A. Varughese to court. Varughese confirmed the suspensions of the six — Datuk S.M. Muthu (Petaling), K. Pregash (Kuala Langat), R. Murugan (Hulu Langat), G. Mohan (Klang), Fauzi Nanivanan Abdullah (Hulu Selangor), and S. Gunaseelan (Sepang) — over alleged breaches of the constitution on June 17. The six officials were given two weeks to appeal the ban, but none did. The six district affiliate presidents were banned for life after tabling a vote of no confidence against Nurhayati. They alleged that Nurhayati had altered the association's financial accounts without committee approval before submitting them to the Sports Commissioner's Office. They questioned Nurhayati's claim that RM15,000 was spent to send 47 athletes to the Perlis Open last October, allegedly funded by both the SAA and the Hulu Selangor district. Fauzi, the Hulu Selangor president, had allegedly denied contributing a single sen. The six disgruntled presidents had written twice to Sports Commissioner Suhardi Alias, who advised them to settle the matter internally.

Selangor athletics dispute heads to court after officials' lifetime bans
KUALA LUMPUR: Six disgruntled district presidents slapped with lifetime bans are taking Selangor Athletics Association (SAA) president Nurhayati Karim and her deputy A. Varughese to court. SAA vice-president and disciplinary committee chairman Varughese confirmed the suspensions of the six — Datuk S.M. Muthu (Petaling), K. Pregash (Kuala Langat), R. Murugan (Hulu Langat), G. Mohan (Klang), Fauzi Nanivanan Abdullah (Hulu Selangor), and S. Gunaseelan (Sepang) — over alleged breaches of the constitution on June 17. The officials were given two weeks to appeal the decision, but none did. However, Muthu, speaking at a press conference on Sunday, insisted the lifetime bans were unlawful. "We did nothing wrong. We are volunteers and abided by the constitution," said Muthu. "It is Nurhayati who violated the rules." He questioned Nurhayati's claim that RM15,000 was spent to send 47 athletes to the Perlis Open last October, allegedly funded by both the SAA and the Hulu Selangor district. "Fauzi, the Hulu Selangor president, denies contributing a single sen. The financial statement is questionable," said Muthu. "Nurhayati also failed to distribute the SAA accounts to district representatives as required under Clause 14.4 of the constitution. "Treasurer Wan Noraina Asyiqeen Ariffin missed three consecutive meetings and should have been removed from her post." Muthu also alleged that both Nurhayati and the treasurer submitted the accounts to the Sports Commissioner's Office without signing the required forms, and that the appointed auditor was not given time to scrutinise the documents. "We raised these issues at the AGM on April 26, but Nurhayati walked out midway. She promised to respond within two weeks but never did. "This is a clear breach of the constitution," he added. "We've now decided to take the matter to court. We will appoint a lawyer within the week. Let the court resolve this." He revealed they had written twice to Sports Commissioner Suhardi Alias, who advised them to settle the matter internally. "But this has affected athlete training and threatens the future of athletics in the state," Muthu said. "We're left with no choice."

MA seeks Poad's help for Sea Games
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Athletics (MA) will rehire Poad Kassim to train the national sprinters for the Sea Games in Bangkok in December. Former teacher Poad was a national sprints coach, but his contract was not extended by MA last year. He then got a job to train Kedah athletes. Poad is known for guiding Khairul Hafiz Jantan to break the national men's 100m record with a time of 10.18s at the Malaysia Games in Sarawak in 2016. He also helped Zaidatul Husniah Zulkifli to set the national women's 100m record (11.49s) at the Perlis Open last October. MA president Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim said that Poad has been doing decentralised training for national sprinters. "It is costly to send eight national sprinters to train in Kedah. So we decided to rope him in as the national coach to train the eight sprinters." Shahidan said - after an MA council meeting today - they will submit Poad's name to the National Sports Council for approval. "With the inclusion of Poad, there will be seven coaches that will be roped in by MA for various disciplines like sprints, jumping and throwing. "We will name the other six coaches later," said Shahidan. On the issue that a few national athletes were unhappy training under certain coaches and wanted to boycott training, Shahidan said he would refer the matter to the MA disciplinary board. "I don't want to prolong the issue, and I want the athletes to focus on training for competitions."
