Easy three-step cleaning method to remove sun cream stains from white clothes
Sun cream is an essential when going on a beach holiday but it can be difficult to remove when it gets onto clothes, especially those that are white, so a cleaning expert shared what she does One chore many people loathe after returning home from a holiday is tackling the washing. Clothes are inevitably going to get grubby during a trip abroad and if there's no opportunity to clean them, the only choice is to hold off until you return home. There are plenty of ways clothing can become stains, such as through food and drinks or sweat when spending time in a hot destination. Sun cream marks particularly can be very tricky to get rid of, especially from white clothes. Anna Louisa is a home and cleaning content creator who regularly shares advice and techniques on social media and is the author of The 5 Minute Clean Routine. In a recent post on Instagram she shared guidance on how she removes sun cream marks from white clothes and brightens them too. The cleaning expert said: "The worst part about coming back from a holiday by far is the mountains of laundry that come home with you." Anna believes white garments are "screaming" to be stripped of sun cream marks and brightened. She then revealed how she cleans them in three straightforward steps. The cleaning guru begins by immersing the sun cream-stained clothes in citric acid for a few hours before placing them in the washing machine as usual but she substitutes fabric softener for white vinegar and a scoop of Oxi Powder. Next, she dries the garments by hanging them on her washing line in the sunlight for "extra brightening power". In her Instagram post caption, Anna warns that citric acid isn't suitable for silk, leather or suede. She also advised checking that sun cream stains have been completely removed before drying, noting you may need to repeat the cleaning process as once dried the marks "can set in deeper". Skincare brand Eucerin explains that sun cream commonly stains clothes due to the oil and UV filters in the formula. Sun cream typically contains avobenzone, a chemical ingredient that has a slight yellow tint as it absorbs UV rays. This tint causes the initial yellow sun cream stains on clothes and according to Eucerin, avobenzone is susceptible to oxidation, which makes yellow-orange stains deepen in colour over time and become harder to remove. It adds that light coloured garments and clothing made from natural fibres, like cotton, are most at risk from sun cream stains. Persil has also offered some advice for removing sun cream stains from white garments. Like Anna, it also suggests hanging white clothing out to dry in the sun, explaining the sun is effective at naturally bleaching stained white clothing in a safe and gentle way. The laundry detergent brand suggests that lemon juice can boost the sun's natural bleaching effect. For particularly stubborn stains, it recommends applying a small amount of lemon juice to the discoloured area before hanging it out to dry. Anna's Instagram video, which shows how she removes sun cream stains from white clothes, racked up 552,000 views, over 4,300 likes and numerous comments, at the time of writing. One user said: "Well I didn't realise citric acid would be the key." Another confessed: "Wow I wish I saw this sooner. I threw away some dresses because I couldn't get sunscreen out." They continued: "I now don't pack whites for beach holidays. [I] Will have to try your method next time." A third viewer chimed in: "Saved, sun cream stains [are] my worst post holiday laundry problem!" Others praised Anna's tips as "so helpful", "amazing" and "so clever."

Washing clothes with these 3 NZ detergents is like using water, consumer NZ finds, see the best performers
Consumer NZ's recent testing reveals that some popular laundry detergents perform no better than plain water, leaving consumers disappointed. Shotz and EcoLiving laundry sheets scored poorly, while Restor claimed the test used an outdated formula. Persil emerged as the top performer, urging consumers to seek better value for their money amidst rising costs. Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Consumers left disappointed Tired of too many ads? A new test by Consumer NZ found that some popular brands are no more effective than a rinse with plain water, leaving Kiwi households paying for little more than fragrance. In a recent test of 46 laundry detergents, liquids, powders, tablets, and sheets, three brands scored below 30 out of organisation tested each detergent on 10 common stains such as grass, olive oil, and ice cream. The products were then scored based on how well they worked in a front-load washing products, Shotz Laundry Liquid and EcoLiving Laundry Detergent Sheets (lavender), scored just 27/100. Restor Laundry Detergent Sheets (fresh linen) did even worse, with a score of comparison, water alone also earned low scores for stain removal but matched or outperformed these products on some stains, such as mud stains, baby food, and Warehouse, which sells Shotz, said it was 'surprised' by the result. 'We regularly hear positive feedback from our customers about Shotz,' said Ryan Murphy, general manager of groceries. He added that the company will review its formula in which also performed poorly, said Consumer NZ tested an older version of its product. The company claimed it had recently launched a new formula with added bio-enzymes, but it wasn't included in the test. It also criticised Consumer NZ for using half a sheet in the test, less than their recommended le Page, head of testing at Consumer NZ, said it wasn't surprising that laundry sheets performed badly. 'They only weigh a few grams. Compared to a capful of liquid or a scoop of powder, they just don't contain enough cleaning agents,' he he acknowledged laundry sheets are still new in the market and could improve over the other end of the scale, Persil stood out as the most effective brand. Consumer NZ Reveals The Best And Worst Laundry Detergents
Three laundry detergents have scored no better than water in Consumer NZ's laundry detergent test. We put 46 detergents through the wringer. Two detergents ended up with an overall score of 27 out of 100 – the same score given to a wash with only water. Those two products were Shotz Laundry Liquid and EcoLiving Laundry Detergent Sheets with lavender scent. Another laundry sheet product – Re-Stor Laundry Detergent Sheets fresh linen scent – scored even lower. These sheets were rated 'poor' at removing everyday grime and most of the stains we use in our detergent tests, including grass and mud, olive oil and tomato. Our head of testing James le Page said he wasn't surprised laundry sheets once more took out two of the bottom spots in the test. 'They only weigh a couple of grams, so when you put them in your machine, they're just not going to do a good job compared with a capful of laundry liquid or scoop of powder, both of which have the potential to contain more active ingredients,' James said. However, James wouldn't be surprised if laundry sheets one day climbed up the test results. 'They're early in their developmental journey as a product. They're years behind the other options, so they're playing catch-up.' Persil products took out the top three spots in the test results, with Persil Ultimate powder proving to be New Zealand's most effective laundry detergent. Persil Active Clean powder wasn't far behind, followed by Persil 3 in 1 Ultimate capsules. Ten detergents were given 'Consumer Recommended' status, including some New Zealand-made Laundromate and Ecostore products. The cheapest Recommended detergent was Ecostore Ultrapower Citrus Fresh – it costs just 8c per wash. It was particularly good at removing everyday grime as well as grass and tomato stains. We have made our laundry detergent test results available for anyone to view on our website. 'We encourage people to have a look at the results and see how the detergent they're using now scores. You might find something that will do a better job for a better price,' James said. Unilever debuts AI-driven design unit to wean brands off TV-first model
This story was originally published on Marketing Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Marketing Dive newsletter. Unilever wants to accelerate the speed of production for its home care business through a new in-house graphic design center that leans into generative artificial intelligence (AI), per news shared with Marketing Dive. The CPG giant developed the unit, called Sketch Pro, in partnership with IPG Studios, with the goal of delivering content three times faster for its brands. Sketch Pro leverages multiple AI platforms, including Adobe Firefly and Google Veo 3, and boasts the ability to turn a concept into material ready for consumer testing within two hours. Sketch Pro, which is already available in several markets, is positioned as helping Unilever navigate the transition from a marketing production model focused on linear TV to one centered on social-first storytelling. Unilever broadly is increasing its spending on social media and influencers to keep its brands tapped into culture. Sketch Pro offers another indication that legacy CPGs are undergoing a shift in their marketing strategy as social media becomes a more important channel and AI enables the level of speed needed to keep pace with fast-scrolling content feeds. Sketch Pro was designed to support home care brands like Persil/Omo, Comfort, Cif and Domestos that have long relied on TV for mass reach but are contending with younger generations of consumers who don't frequently tune in to broadcast or cable. TV production also tends to require a long lead time while brands today are expected to have lightning-quick reactions to moments and micro-trends bubbling up in culture, such as a gaffe from a public official that can be flipped into a marketing win. While Sketch Pro is billed as an internal 'centre of excellence,' Unilever developed the concept with IPG Studios, Interpublic Group's creative production agency. Sketch Pro emphasizes that it is not wed to a single AI platform, but instead promotes a flexible approach, with the goal of pushing creative boundaries. Among the group's tools is Google's Veo 3 AI video generator, which has recently garnered media attention for its ability to produce shockingly realistic content. 'Our partnership with IPG supercharges our ability to ideate, iterate and deliver high-quality design assets with speed and cultural relevance, reflecting how consumers now engage with the home care category,' said Mario Dughi, global marketing director at Unilever, in a press statement. Sketch Pro is currently live in London, São Paulo, Mumbai and Jakarta, while Unilever plans to expand the offering to 21 markets by next year. Around Ramadan, the Jakarta Sketch Pro Team was recently able to capitalize on holiday-related social trends to increase the visibility of brands including Rinso and Sunlight on TikTok by 22.5%, the announcement said. Unilever has made generative AI a focus as it tries to improve efficiency while cutting down on costs. Chief Growth and Marketing Officer Esi Eggleston Bracey in March detailed how the company is using AI solutions to create 'digital twins' of products for brands like Dove that can be easily adapted across channels and formats. At the same time, Unilever is adjusting where it invests media dollars, with plans to allocate half of its marketing spend to social while significantly broadening its work with influencers.
