Dundee United flop Mark Birighitti signs two-year deal with Australian top flight side

Ex-Dundee United goalkeeper Mark Birighitti has put pen to paper on a two-year deal in the Australian top flight. The former Tangerines man endured a rough spell at Tannadice between 2022 and 2024, during which he failed to endear himself to supporters with a string of under-par performances. The 34-year-old Aussie returned to his homeland last summer, after his United contract expired. After spending time with semi-professional side Perth SC, he has now stepped up to the top level of Australian football – the A-League – with Perth Glory. Returning to a league where he has enjoyed the best spells of his career – and with his hometown club – is an exciting prospect for Birighitti, who has voyed to give his all for his new side. He said: 'Coming back to Australia and playing for my hometown club is where my heart is and I am ready to give everything for the club and play my part in helping them achieve their goals. 'Perth Glory means more than just football. 'It's about representing my family, fans and everything Perth Glory stands for. 'For me, it's not just a career move, it's a personal journey. This city has shaped me into the player I am and I'm proud to be back where it all started. 'I want to give back on the pitch and I am ready to fight for every point for this club.' Birighitti made 30 appearances for the Tangerines but fell out of favour altogether in his second season with the club. He was sent on an emergency loan to Kilmarnock in January 2024 but did not feature for the Rugby Park side.

Socceroos to host open training session for public ahead of crucial World Cup qualifer against Japan

WA Day has just got even bigger, with the Socceroos set to host a free open training session on Monday's public holiday ahead of their blockbuster World Cup qualifier against Japan. Led by former Perth Glory coach Tony Popovic, the Socceroos will open the gates to HBF Park on Monday for one of their last training sessions before they fight for a spot at next year's World Cup. With two crucial matches left in their qualification campaign against Japan and Saudi Arabia, positive results in both games would see Australia seal second spot in their group and clinch qualification for a sixth successive World cup. The national team are currently encamped in Abu Dhabi ahead of Popovic unveiling his squad for the two qualifiers, which starts with next Thursday's match against Japan at Optus Stadium. West Australians Adam Taggart, Cameron Burgess, Alessandro Circati and Jack Iredale are among the West Australians vying for contention in the squad. Monday's open training will be the first session of an all-important week for Popovic's men, knowing a win against Japan could potentially seal their spot at next year's marquee tournament in North America. Fans will be able to watch the Socceroos stars train for free and with no registration needed just 72 hours out from the Japan match. Access will be available via gate one at HBF Park and fans will be allowed in from 4pm onwards ahead of the 5pm start. Perth Glory sign All Whites defender Sam Sutton

Sam Sutton. Photo: Masanori Udagawa / PHOTOSPORT All Whites and former Phoenix defender Sam Sutton has signed a three-year deal with Perth Glory. Sutton, 23, left the Phoenix this month after nearly a decade with the club having joined Wellington's academy at the age of 14. He played 98 games A-League games for the Phoenix in six seasons in the senior squad and said upon his departure he hoped it was a 'see you later' rather than a 'good-bye'. "The club's been a big part of my life, and it's meant everything to me," Sutton said. "The Phoenix is my home. I've been here for the best part of 10 years and not winning any silverware is pretty heartbreaking for me." The left-back is the first new arrival at Glory since the end of their season in which Glory collected the wooden spoon for the second consecutive season. The Perth move had been widely anticipated and Sutton is expected to be joined there by former Phoenix defender Scott Wootten, who has also left the club. "I decided to sign for Perth for many reasons," Sutton said. "Firstly, I've been there many times and it's definitely my favourite city in Australia, but more importantly, the passion, belief and ambition I got from (coach) David Zdrilic and (Glory football director) Stan Lazaridis was the key determining factor," he said. "I believe in the calibre of players we are keeping and the ones we intend to bring in, and hope we can win some silverware." Lazaridis said they had been monitoring Sutton for a while. "He has all the attributes required to really fit our playing style. "He's a tenacious defender with a great engine who also likes to get forward and is capable of providing quality delivery into the box. "At 23, we believe we have signed him at a great time and that he will continue his development into one of the best left-backs in the A-League."
