Rodent faeces found in food at Perth butcher

A butcher in Queens Park has been slapped with a whopping fine after health inspectors discovered rodent faeces throughout the premises and in the food. The owners of Wharf Street Quality Meats was fined $62,500 and ordered to pay $2,125 in costs after health inspectors found the establishment was not up to scratch. The butcher opened in 2010 and attracts a swathe of good reviews from locals who praise the freshness and quality of the meat. In November 2024, City of Canning inspectors learnt Wharf Street Quality Meats was operating well below standard and issued an improvement notice. This notice was not complied with, leading to a prohibition order for the processing and sale of food on November 25. Rodent faeces was found throughout the butcher shop and there was evidence of rodent faeces in food. On July 11, the store owner plead guilty to all 16 charges in Perth Magistrates Court. City health officers have now granted the butcher shop permission to reopen. The $62,500 fine is the second biggest handed down to a food business in 2025. Scarborough's Brighton Bakery was fined $100,000 in June for a raft of unsafe food practices that included uncovered raw meat products being stored next to 'ready-to-eat salad items,' and foods being kept at temperatures well above safe levels. Last year, Lavoro Italiano Restaurant, also in the City of Rockingham, was fined the same amount when inspectors found crawling cockroaches and cigarette butts in the dry storage. Prosecutors described the kitchen as one of the worst they'd seen in WA, saying: 'Cockroaches seen during the day indicates a serious infestation. When they were pointed out, the owner was not surprised'. But a Nandos in Willetton copped the biggest fine of 2024 when it was hit with $160,000 for being filthy, crawling with rats and selling food past its use-by date. This was followed by Belmont-based Aquarium Seafood Chinese Restaurant, which was fined $80,000 for being dirty and riddled with pests.

Extradited Catholic priest charged with sexually assaulting another child 30 years ago

A Catholic priest who was extradited earlier this year over historic sex abuse charges has been charged with sexually assaulting another child more than 30-years-ago. Child abuse detectives travelled to New South Wales and arrested the then 79-year-old at a Granville property after allegedly offending against a child while visiting WA in 1990. He faced Perth Magistrates Court in February with two counts of unlawful indecent dealings of a child under the age of 13. Further investigations revealed the man — now 80-years-old — also allegedly sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl during his 1990 visit to WA. He was charged with aggravated indecent assault and aggravated sexual assault and is due to face Fremantle Magistrates Court on Friday. Inquiries are ongoing. Anyone who has been a victim of sexual abuse or has information about someone being abused is asked to contact police on 131 444 or report the information via the Safe2Say anonymous online reporting platform.

President Donald Trump's tax-cut package cleared its final hurdle in the US Congress on Thursday, as the Republican-controlled House of Representatives narrowly approved the massive bill and sent it to him to sign into law. Michael Madsen, the actor best known for his coolly menacing, steely-eyed, often sadistic characters in the films of Quentin Tarantino, including Reservoir Dogs and Kill Bill: Vol. 2, has died. Football champions and political leaders have led the stunned reaction to the sudden death of Liverpool FC star Diogo Jota in a fiery car crash in northern Spain less than two weeks after he married his long-term partner. 9.30am Today's weather 9.30am Welcome to our live news blog Good morning readers, and welcome to our live news blog for Friday, July 4. And happy Independence Day to any Americans who happen to be following along this morning – although, if you're in the US and reading WAtoday, there's a high chance you took a wrong turn in your search for news from Washington, not Western Australia. On the West Australian front, there's talk of 'thinning' the Causeway bridge that spans the Swan River in Perth's east. How do you 'thin' a bridge? And why are we thinking about shaving off a bit of the Causeway? Both valid questions, and we can give you the hint that it has something to do with the government's planned 'Metronet on Swan'. Hamish Hastie has the full story here. Meanwhile, Tourism WA is gearing up to release another iteration of its Walking on a Dream campaign (you know, the one soundtracked by an airy re-do of that iconic Empire of the Sun tune over idyllic vistas of our great state?) So we wonder which WA agency has won the contract to shoot the ad series.

Yung Filly update sees star face two new sexual assault charges

Yung Filly - whose real name is Andres Felipe Valencia Barrientos - was charged with rape and other offenses over an alleged sexual assault on a woman in Australia last year British rapper, Yung Filly, is facing two new sexual assault charges relating to the assault of a woman while he was on tour in Australia. Filly - whose real name is Andres Felipe Valencia Barrientos - was charged with rape and other offences over an alleged sexual assault on a woman in the country last year. In March, he pleaded not guilty to three counts of assault occasioning bodily harm, one of strangulation and four counts of sexual penetration without consent. However, according to court documents filed on Friday, the YouTuber, 29, faces two new counts of sexual penetration without consent, and no plea has been entered for them. ‌ ‌ The incident is alleged to have taken place on 28 September. Filly had been touring Australia at the time of the alleged offences. Filly appeared at Perth Magistrates Court for an initial hearing on October 10, 2024 where he was granted conditional bail. The bail terms stated that he did not discuss the case on social media, or contact the alleged victim. The rapper appeared in Perth Magistrates Court for a second time on March 11, 2025, and pleaded not guilty to all charges. He was told to appear in the District Court of Western Australia on July 13. On June 13, two new charges of sexual penetration without consent were filed against Filly. During a court hearing in November, the British-Colombian saw his bail request put on hold until later that day. ABC Australia covered the story, noting that Perth barrister Seamus Rafferty SC is representing the entertainer. Rafferty commented on the denied bail, stating: "This has already made headlines. Given the nature of social media, the nature of people jumping on bandwagons, given the nature of (the) power imbalance between the parties." ‌ A TikTok video from Perth's Bar1 Nightclub went viral last year, showcasing Filly – who has appeared in Channel 4's The Great Celebrity Bake Off – performing at the venue. Meanwhile, in a sombre contrast, images depicting injuries allegedly sustained by a woman were presented to the court. "No ordinary person can consent in those circumstances," stated the prosecutor in reference to the gruesome photos, adding: "Across her body is a history of violent acts, ... we say those photos and what is alleged is beyond the pale, beyond what could be considered to be a consensual act." Filly, who was born in Colombia and moved to London aged two as a refugee with his mum and sister began his YouTube career in 2013 before releasing his debut single Take Time in 2017. He went onto host shows Hot Property and Don't Scream on BBC Three and has also appeared in Soccer Aid and The Great Stand Up to Cancer Bake Off. Filly's 10-day trial is scheduled to start on 20 July 2026.
