Pedestrian dies after being hit by e-scooter in Perth
A 51-year-old dad who was hit by an e-scooter in Perth's CBD has died, while the allegedly drunk young rider has had her charge upgraded and bail denied. British backpacker Alicia Kemp is accused of striking Thanh Phan from behind as he walked along Murray Street with a friend about 8.40pm on Saturday. A police prosecutor told Perth Magistrates Court on Tuesday she had a blood alcohol reading of 0.158 per cent. The 24-year-old — who appeared from custody flanked by security guards — and a female friend had been drinking at a pub since 2.30pm but were kicked out for drunkenness six hours later, Magistrate Richard Huston was told. They walked towards a taxi rank but instead hired an e-scooter, and Ms Kemp took off along the footpath in an 'inexplicably dangerous' manner, the police prosecutor said. Mr Phan suffered a brain bleed while the pillion passenger, 26, was flung from the e-scooter and suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The whole incident lasted less than 10 minutes and was captured on CCTV, making the case 'extremely strong', the police prosecutor said. Vehicle examiners who watched the footage estimated Ms Kemp reached up to 25km/h, while the speed limit for e-scooters on footpaths was 10km/h, she said. 'There were numerous witnesses at the scene, admissions were made at the scene,' she said. Mr Phan, a Worley engineer, was struck from behind, the court was told. Ms Kemp has now had her charge upgraded to dangerous driving occasioning death under the influence of alcohol, from dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm under the influence of alcohol. It carries a maximum penalty of 20 years. The police prosecutor opposed bail, saying Ms Kemp was in WA for four months on a working holiday visa and had no connection to WA, so was a flight risk. 'The temptation might be not to return,' Mr Huston said. 'I just can't manage that risk.' Ms Kemp wiped away tears as she was told she would be remanded in custody until her next court appearance on July 15. Mr Phan's family released a statement, saying he was a beloved husband, father of two, brother and dear friend, and news of his death on Monday night had been heart-breaking. They called for a review of laws and safety regulations around hired e-scooters 'to help prevent further serious incidents that put lives at risk'. Ms Kemp also faces a charge of dangerous driving occasioning bodily harm under the influence of alcohol over her friend's injuries, which required hospital treatment. Ms Kemp sustained minor injuries and was not taken to hospital. Mr Phan's profile showed he studied in Singapore before working in Vietnam then Sydney before moving to Perth.

Lauren Dunn: Alleged DV victim of former Fremantle Docker Ryan Crowley thankful for police, positive messages
The former reality TV star who has accused ex-Fremantle Docker Ryan Crowley of serious domestic violence offences, has broken her silence for the first time since details of the horrific allegations surfaced. Lauren Dunn, who is an ambassador for Polished Man — a movement that aims to end violence against women and children in Australia — said she had been overwhelmed by the messages she had received over the past two days. Mr Crowley faced Perth Magistrates Court on Thursday accused of unleashing a torrent of abuse on Ms Dunn, a former Married At First Sight contestant, which included beating then choking her until she fell unconscious at a house in Claremont on Tuesday and Wednesday. The 41-year-old denies the charges with a duty lawyer telling the hearing his client disputed the severity of the allegations put before the court and the physical contact that was alleged. Taking to Instagram on Friday, Ms Dunn vowed to continue to advocate for changes to the way domestic violence was reported in the media in Australia and praised WA Police for how they dealt with her claims. 'This has ignited a fire in my belly to continue to use my voice as an advocate for others and to work to change the way Australian media reports on DV in Australia,' Ms Dunn wrote in statement posted to her Instagram account. 'I can say that WA Police have been nothing short of amazing. 'I felt empowered and strong and supported. I hope that (others) out there can read this, and it will give them confidence to go to police. I am doing well, I am OK and it's business as usual.' During Mr Crowley's bail application hearing, the court was told the pair had been in an on-and-off relationship for five years, between 2018 and 2023, that had been marred with allegations of domestic violence. It was revealed in court there were six prior incidents involving the pair between 2019 and 2020 where police had been called out regarding allegations of arguments and controlling behaviours including one claim that Mr Crowley was the alleged victim, however no charges were laid. Mr Crowley has been charged with a string of offences including aggravated assault causing bodily harm and is set to appear in court again in July.

'This incident has ignited a fire in my belly to continue to use my voice as an advocate for others and to work to change the way Australian media reports on DV in Australia, often praising and listing the accolades of the perpetrator,' Dunn posted. 'Something I have seen done repeatedly over the last two days. In the past when I have called police I have felt like the perpetrator and treated as if I have done something wrong, leading me to never follow through with charges. 'Many years later, finding myself in the same position I knew I had to do the right thing and walk the talk I so often preach. I can say that WA Police have been nothing short of amazing. Former AFL player accused of violent attack on reality star ex-girlfriend
Former Fremantle Docker Ryan Crowley has appeared in court accused of a jealousy-fuelled attack on his former girlfriend, ex-Married at First Sight star Lauren Dunn. Crowley, 41, allegedly strangled Dunn, 34, and smothered her face with a pillow to the point she lost consciousness when he became enraged about email conversations between her and another man. The Perth Magistrates Court was told the pair got into a verbal argument shortly after she had invited him over to her Claremont apartment about 8pm on Tuesday, before it escalated into violence. After their verbal spat, Dunn asked Crowley to leave and even phoned triple-0 when he refused, the court was told. It is alleged she chose to tell the operator the call was a mistake and ended it because she frightened. The court was told Crowley then snatched Dunn's phone and searched her laptop for proof that she had cheated on him, and assaulted her when he came across messages from another man. Crowley allegedly threw the victim to the floor, with her head slamming on the ground. While she was on the floor, it is alleged Crowley strangled the PR-guru, grabbing her around the neck and using his hand to cover her mouth and nose. The pair struggled and Dunn lost consciousness for some time, before the accused let go, the court was told. Credit: / Instagram / Instagram It is alleged that when Dunn, who was in an on-again, off-again relationship with Crowley between 2018 and 2023, cried out for help she was assaulted again. It is alleged Crowley violently shook her, slamming her head on the ground multiple times. The next thing she remembers is Crowley lying on her couch and asking her to come cuddle him, the court was told. When she told him to leave, he allegedly said no and instead got into bed beside her. She could not call for help because Crowley had her phone and laptop. The next morning Crowley allegedly stopped her from leaving her home through the front door, grabbing her shirt and scratching her stomach, leaving her bleeding and with swelling. When she tried to stop him going through her laptop, he allegedly grabbed her by the neck and squeezed before covering her face with a pillow and pushing down hard. The court was told she again lost consciousness before Crowley got off her. Dunn broke down in tears, terrified, and begging for her phone, the court was told, before she able to run to a nearby cafe and call for help. The former footballer was later arrested at Perth Train Station and charged with nine domestic violence-related charges. The prosecution says this incident is serious and Crowley could be facing substantial prison time if found guilty. He is expected to fight the allegations. Crowley was granted bail with a $20,000 surety during his appearance in court on Thursday. He must not leave WA and must not contact Dunn. His will next appear in court on July 24. Crowley played 196 AFL games, with 188 of those with Fremantle and a further eight for Essendon where he was a top-up player following the supplements saga. He claimed Fremantle's Doig Medal in 2012 as the club's best and fairest player, and played in Fremantle's grand final loss to Hawthorn the following season.
