Rare golden raspberries exclusively grown in Scotland available to buy at major supermarket

Punnets of the unique berries are a first for growers at the Perthshire-based Bruce Farm. Punnets of rare golden raspberries grown in Scotland have exclusively landed at a major supermarket. Available for a limited time only, shoppers won't have long to get their hands on them. A first for Scottish growers, the unique summer berries were grown by the Perthshire-based Bruce Farm who said that it was a "real passion project" to bring the new fruit to the UK market. ‌ If they are quick, shoppers will be able to pick them up at Asda. To help bring punnets to its stores, the retail giant also worked with the popular Scotty Brand, a firm that was born in Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, in 1948 when Albert Barlett began boiling home-grown beetroot in a tin bath to support his family. ‌ The golden-coloured berries officially became available to buy in select stores across the UK this weekend, but Asda has warned customers that they will only be around while crops last. Said to sit alongside their more popular red counterparts, these raspberries have been getting singled out for their "distinctive" yellow-hue and "delicate" texture. Geoff Bruce, Director at Bruce Farms, a fourth-generation farm in Blairgowrie, Perthshire, said: "The golden raspberries have been a real passion project for us and it's exciting to be at the forefront of introducing something new to the Scottish soft fruit sector. "As growers, we're always looking at ways to innovate and explore different varieties that not only thrive in our climate but also offer a unique selling point for customers. "Our product development team sourced the rare 'all gold' raspberries, and we are pleased to let consumers try them for the first time, however they will need to be quick as the crop is limited. ‌ "It's been incredibly rewarding to see them being grown successfully here in Perthshire's rich farmland and building on our family's 125-year legacy of farming and commitment to quality.' They are already a massive hit with top Scottish chef Steve McLaughlin of Gleneagles' two-Michelin star restaurant Andrew Fairlie who uses them in fine dining desserts, but has also recommended them for home cooking. ‌ The Scots chef said: "For me, it's always about flavour, and these golden raspberries truly delivered, a delicate understated tartness, balanced with a nice hit of Scottish earthiness. Perfect for a fine dining summer dessert, or equally in a simple fruit salad at home." Andrew Young, Scotty Brand Development Manager, said: "At Scotty Brand, we're committed to supporting Scottish growers and expanding variety of produce available to retailers and customers. "Our long-standing partnership with Asda has enabled us to bring this exclusive new product to market, supporting growth and diversification within the sector while showcasing the exceptional quality of Scottish produce and the vital role of local, sustainable growing practices.' ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Ashley Connolly, Asda Scotland Local Buying Manager, said: "It's exciting that Asda customers will be the first to be able to buy these limited-edition golden raspberries. Our partnership with Scotty Brand has continued to go from strength to strength, and by bringing this new product innovation to life is a credit to both the farm and supplier. "Getting the product into Asda stores this quickly also highlights our ongoing commitment to supporting local growers as well as offering customers something new, fresh, seasonal and unique." The rare Scottish golden raspberries are available to buy in select Asda stores for a limited time now.

Quotes from iconic Scottish poets unveiled on walls of Scottish Parliament

The works have been carved into stones from across the country by Perthshire-based stone carver Gillian Forbes, assisted by apprentice Cameron Wallace. Scotland's esteemed poets have graced the Scottish Parliament walls with their verses - thanks to a Perthshire stone carver. The words of former Scots Makars Liz Lochhead, Jackie Kay and Kathleen Jamie now permanently adorn the parliamentary estate, thanks to the craftsmanship of Glenfarg stone carver Gillian Forbes and her apprentice Cameron Wallace. ‌ Etched into stones hailing from across Scotland, they have been placed on the Canongate Wall of Holyrood, which sits on the Royal Mile. ‌ With these additions, there are now 29 engraved quotations on the wall, celebrating the rich tapestry of Scottish literature, from revered writers to timeworn proverbs and cherished poetry. Achnaba Schist sourced near Lochgilphead served as the canvas for Lochhead's poignant contribution: "this". "our one small country.. "our one, wondrous, spinning, dear green place. "What shall we build of it, together". "in this our one small time and space?". ‌ Kay's heartfelt words carved into Ailsa Craig Granite from Ayrshire, says : "Where do you come from?". "'Here,' I said, 'Here. These parts.'". ‌ Meanwhile, Jamie's Dalbeattie Granite inscription from Dumfriesshire, says: "Be brave:". "by the weird-song in the dark you'll find your way." ‌ Alison Johnstone, the Presiding Officer, lauded the installation as an homage to the artistry and dedication of women excelling in their fields within Scotland. She remarked: "The inspirational words of our three poets – Liz Lochhead, Jackie Kay and Kathleen Jamie – combine with the skill of stone carver Gillian Forbes, making these quotes something of real beauty using stone from across Scotland. ‌ "This is only possible thanks to the original vision of Enric Miralles and artist Soraya Smithson, who designed the wall as a permanent reminder of our rich cultural heritage. "I'm proud to unveil these new quotes, which ensure that this piece of living public sculpture reflects the writing talent we have in Scotland today." Lochhead, Makar between 2011 and 2016, said: "It's a big part of my life, being a Scot, being somebody who has a Parliament, and getting some of my words on the walls here, it's fantastic." ‌ Kay, who succeeded as Makar in 2016 until 2021, shared: "It's a huge honour and so extraordinary to be carved into stone. "It's so strange to think of your words surviving you – but in a sense, that's every writer's dream." Jamie, who held the title of Makar from 2021 until last year, added: "Poetry is very democratic. It's available to anybody – through libraries, through memory. It's free, and it's absolutely of our culture."
