Los Angeles's restaurants continue to face difficult headwinds, starting in 2020 with the onset of a global pandemic and exacerbating with the Hollywood labor strikes in 2023, which led to an industry-wide slowdown that's continued into 2025. From the lingering impacts of the Hollywood strikes to increased costs (labor, rent, ingredients, etc.), many variables continue to batter restaurant owners who operate on razor-thin margins. Los Angeles restaurants also continue to struggle with the impact of the 2025 fires, including slow business and devastating property loss, as well as the ongoing effects of ICE enforcement. MXO— Wes Avila's Monterrey-inspired West Hollywood steakhouse, MXO, suddenly shuttered this summer after less than a year open. A representative for the restaurant initially stated that the closure was temporary, but later confirmed the restaurant's permanent closure. The closure leaves Avila, who has been an influential force in Los Angeles's dining scene for years, with Ka'Teen as his only restaurant in the city. Melody— Virgil Village wine bar Melody closed on July 12 after eight years in the neighborhood. Owner Eric Tucker announced the closure of Melody in an Instagram post on July 2, thanking the staff and customers for the years of support. While Melody is technically closed, Tucker is operating 'Bar Band-Aid' out of the bungalow until he finds someone to take over the space. My 2 Cents— Los Angeles soul food staple My 2 Cents is closing on July 31. Founded in 2013 by Alisa Reynolds and her pastry chef sister, Theresa Fountain, the restaurant developed a following for its gluten-free barbecue fried chicken, catfish, brown sugar caramel cake, and more. After My 2 Cents' closure, it will transition to a catering option, and sell merchandise. Mother Tongue— Michael Mina's Mother Tongue, set on the rooftop of fitness club Heimat, suddenly shuttered in June with no announcement. The restaurant's Instagram has also been removed. Mother Tongue first debuted in 2022 with a menu of globally-inspired dishes that catered to a high-end wellness lifestyle. Shibumi— David Schlossler's Japanese kaiseki restaurant Shibumi closed on July 19, less than a month after retaining its Michelin star. 'Shibumi was a revelation in 2015 Los Angeles,' Schlossler wrote in the closure announcement on Instagram, before teasing that there's 'more to come soon.' Cabra— The Hoxton's rooftop restaurant Cabra is closing on July 31, and throwing a party to say goodbye. The restaurant from Stephanie Izard opened in 2022, serving a Peruvian-inflected menu of dishes like ceviche and skirt steak saltado. A new operator for the Hoxton's rooftop restaurant has not been announced yet. Chin Chin— Chin Chin, a decades-old Chinese restaurant along West Hollywood's Sunset Strip, closed on July 27, 2025 after more than 40 years. Chin Chin's other locations in Brentwood, Studio City, and Las Vegas remain open. First opened in 1983, the restaurant became a celebrity hangout over the years, and a favorite for its signature Chinese chicken salad. According to the closure announcement, Chin Chin is searching for a new location for the restaurant.
