Expect increased military vehicle traffic in eastern Ontario this weekend
Military vehicles are seen being driven on a highway in this undated photo. (DND/supplied) The Department of National Defence (DND) says residents in Ottawa, Petawawa, and surrounding areas can expect to see increased military vehicle traffic this weekend as transport and supply convoys move down several highways in the region. 'Members of the public may see increased military traffic with Canadian Army vehicles operating on various area roads including Ontario Highways 7, 17, 26, 41, 55, 115, 401, 403, 407, 417, and the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW),' a news release said. 'This increased military traffic is in support of the annual Exercise STALWART GUARDIAN and will follow pre-planned routes between Toronto, Peterborough, Ottawa and Petawawa.' DND says the vehicles will be transporting approximately 1,500 soldiers and their equipment on Aug. 15 and 16, and again Aug. 23 and 24. Participating personnel will conduct planned, short stops along the routes, stopping for rest, fuel, and scheduled maintenance. 'Participating soldiers will not carry any weapons or ammunition while making public stops on the designated routes of travel to and from this annual, regularly scheduled exercise,' DND says. The Stalwart Guardian exercise is an annual training event held every August at Garrison Petawawa. The event features simulated combat operations as part of the Canadian Armed Forces' mission for preparedness and readiness. It involves troops from across Ontario. 'All measures are being taken to ensure minimum inconvenience in these areas during the exercise dates. Members of the public are asked to take extra caution when approaching military vehicles and are thanked in advance for their understanding and co-operation,' the military says.

Fire bans enacted in Pembroke and Petawawa
Fire department officials in Pembroke and Petawawa have ordered burn bans for their respective municipalities as hot, dry weather continues. 'No open-air burning, including recreational fires, as outlined in By-law 2023-63 shall be permitted. All permits issued to City of Pembroke residents are being suspended at this time,' Pembroke Fire Chief Scott Selle said in a news release Monday. 'This ban on recreational fires shall also encompass the Riverside Park Campground, including the public fire pits located there. CSA approved propane and natural gas fired outdoor appliances may still be used but must be handled with caution. If using cooking appliances, it is the responsibility of the owner/operator to attend, control, and supervise the appliance at all times. The fire ban in Pembroke is effective immediately and will be in place until further notice. The ban in Petawawa officially comes into force at noon Monday, Acting Fire Chief Craig Proulx said in a news release. 'The Town of Petawawa Fire Department has issued a complete fire ban in effect for the Town of Petawawa. This means all recreational, campground, and rural fire permits are suspended until further notice and no new permits will be issued while the fire ban is in effect,' Proulx wrote. 'The Town of Petawawa Fire Department appreciates your cooperation. We continue to monitor the fire indices on a daily basis and are working collaboratively with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.' Eastern Ontario has seen below-average rainfall for much of the summer. Open-air fires are also banned in Ottawa and Kingston.

Armed forces needs to strengthen screening to weed out extremists: expert
A Canadian soldier takes part in an announcement in Petawawa, Ont., on Thursday, Oct. 19, 2023. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Sean Kilpatrick OTTAWA — An expert in extremism says recent arrests linked to an alleged plot to create an anti-government militia show the Canadian Armed Forces needs to do a better job of vetting at the recruitment stage. University of Alberta political science professor Andy Knight says the fact that two of the four men charged Tuesday in relation to an alleged anti-government plot are active members of the military shows the Canadian Armed Forces isn't doing enough to screen out extremists. He says extremism within the forces needs to be 'explored and stamped out as soon as possible' so it doesn't fester and spread. Knight conducted research for the Department of National Defence that uncovered racist and extremist beliefs among some military members. RCMP announced charges against four men Tuesday over an alleged plot to forcibly take possession of land in the Quebec City area. The cache of weapons seized by police during the investigation is the largest ever uncovered in a domestic terrorism case. This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 9, 2025. Ottawa Valley STOMP Music Festival kicks off Friday
The Ottawa Valley has a brand-new music festival to take in this Canada Day long week. Friday marks the first night of the new Ottawa Valley STOMP Music Festival being hosted in Petawawa. The three-day festival at the Petawawa Civic Centre features two headlining bands that are bringing the 80's back, The Box and Honeymoon Suite. 'Our crowd, the demographic is 80's, and you can't really go out and get your fix of the 80's,' said organizer and STOMP's chief technical officer Jim Dent. 'So this this is your chance to come on out and have fun with us. This is a great music, we've got The Box, we've got Honeymoon Suite, that's as 80's as it gets.' The weekend festival is a combination of many family activities, including a lumberjack competition on Saturday, a buttertart festival, an array of food festival trucks, a touch-a-truck event for kids and more. Dent says the all-Canadian festival brings together different aspects of the Ottawa Valley. 'We've never done this before in our hometown, so we thought that we'd bring it here. Everyone's after us to bring it here, and they want to see it. They don't want to have to drive to Ottawa to see a show.' Speaking with CTV News ahead of their set Friday night, lead singer for Montreal-based band The Box, Jean-Marc Pisapia, says they are getting asked to play many new summer music festivals each year, and enjoy the crowds small towns create. 'Actually, they are a lot more enthusiast than the big city, blasé kind of attitude, where you really need something hip, otherwise it's not going to work,' says Pisapia. 'Here, people, they just love it.' Due to the weekend's rainy forecast, Dent says the festival had to move its stage inside the Petawawa Civic Centre, but in doing so, allows bands to play longer since they do not have to abide by the outdoor noise bylaw. Pisapia says The Box will make it up to fans by playing a longer set. 'In the first half of the show, we're going to do some more recent material. And in the second half, all the old hits for the 80's. So if someone's wondering, is it like if I go see the Police and they don't play Roxanne, no, we do all our old hits from the 80s.' With the live music moving indoors, it does put a cap on tickets, which Dent says is roughly 1300. He says as of Friday afternoon, the festival had sold about 1000 tickets. 'So if you haven't got tickets, you better get them, because we have a capacity here in this building and we're very close to that now.' If successful, Dent says the plan is to host the Ottawa Valley STOMP Music Festival annually, moving it around to different host communities in the region. Petawawa Mayor Gary Serviss says the town has no projections for the economic impact the festival will bring, but hotels in the area are fully booked. 'I'm hoping that it's more than just a Petawawa celebration, that it's a Renfrew County, Upper Ottawa Valley celebration,' he says. 'That we attract everybody from all around to come to Petawawa and enjoy all that we have to offer this weekend.'
