Rogers City Council approves $28M emergency fund
ROGERS, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — On Tuesday, the Rogers City Council unanimously voted to approve a $28 million plan to create an emergency reserve fund.
The city says the move comes after experiencing multiple emergency situations like the Memorial Day weekend tornadoes, which left the city facing millions of dollars in damage, or the Marck Industries fire, which forced the fire department to replace thousands of dollars of equipment.
Peter Masonis, with the city of Rogers, says the council will be able to decide what counts as an 'emergency', therefore allowing the funds to be utilized. However, it will require two-thirds of the council to vote in favor of using the money.

'What happens when the next tornado comes through Rogers? Are we going to have the money that's going to be there in order to help put back the city?', Masonis said.
Masonis says having a reserve fund previously helped the city get back on its feet.
'Our mayor has been in office for 15 years, and he's done a pretty good job of building up a healthy reserve, and so that's helped us out through these processes,' Masonis said. 'One of the things with the 2024 tornado is that reserve really helped us hit the ground running with clean up, and getting the city restored.'
Masonis said the money will come from the city's payroll and operations budget.
