Dior Makeup's Peter Philips On How The House Is Flipping The Script In The Beauty World

Photo: GRAZIA I've set my phone down after a 15-minute doom scroll on TikTok. At this point in time, and algorithms, I'm finding myself immersed in the so-called 'beauty blindness' side of the app. This is by no means a new concept in the world of TikTok, nor, in fact, in the beauty world in general – well, perhaps the name, but that's about it. For decades, we have long been embracing trends; with time, they fade away, and we look back more often than not, thinking the same thing: why on earth did we do that to ourselves? In the '90s, it was paper-thin eyebrows, followed by foundation lips in the 2000s, which was then succeeded by the 'full beat' in the 2010s. And now? Well, it's hard to pinpoint; we're in a world of micro trends, making it all but impossible to keep up. So, it poses the question, as a consumer – and someone who is on the periphery of the beauty industry – how are brands able to stay ahead of the curve? According to Peter Philips, creative & image director of Dior Makeup, it's about 'challenging' the market, which is exactly what he did eight years ago, launching the now-famed Dior Backstage line. At a time when, as Philips notes, many indie brands were emerging, Dior looked at creating a 'line to attract and seduce a younger audience that was maybe a bit too intimidated' by the house's more luxurious collections. 'We needed to really do something, to not become an old brand,' he tells me, sitting down together in Dubai. 'So, the idea of the Backstage line was created as almost a no-brainer line, as if a makeup artist was doing your makeup. The palettes were made in a way that you couldn't make any mistakes. We had a mistake-proof foundation with a guaranteed makeup result.' That was all back in 2018, of course. Fast-forward to 2025, we're in a very different landscape across the board, but particularly in the beauty space. Now more than ever, consumers are more educated about the makeup they are wearing, how they are applying it and what a great product is (and what it isn't), which is a stark change to the rationale originally behind the creation of the Dior Backstage line. 'The younger generation, they change, and they are now so knowledgeable, they know everything,' Philips notes. 'We don't have to give them an easy, no-brainer and makeup line anymore, because they want to be challenged. They want to be excited. They know they know how to do makeup.' Dior Addict Lip Glow Butter in 101 Glazed Pink, 103 Toffee, 105 Lychee, DIOR, SHOP NOW Enter a new era for Dior Backstage, bringing more playfulness and colour into the line, which Philips describes as a 'yummy, less professional and a bit more fun' iteration. The latest addition to the Backstage family is a vibrant trio: the Rosy Glow Stick, an updated Rosy Glow Powder Blush, and a nourishing Lip Glow Butter. While the original Rosy Glow blush has long been a cult favourite – thanks to its pH-reactive formula that adjusts to the skin's chemistry – the new stick version brings the same smart technology in a buttery cream texture that melts into skin for a dewy, g lowy finish. A sign of the times indeed. A mere eight years ago it was a matte finish that was all the rage. No glow in sight. 'The beauty landscape has been evolving constantly,' Philips highlights. 'It's very organic. It's very diverse. There is so much happening. At Dior, I feel we've been really good by staying in touch without losing our credibility as an established house.' For Philips, it's been about finding a balancing act between the house's loyal clientele over generations, while also attracting a new audience. 'We don't want to be estranged from our loyal clients, but we always try to seduce young, younger generations to discover Dior so they don't feel that they have an old brand,' he says. 'It's just by, first of all, being constant and delivering your quality. Because of social media and because of the openness around makeup, there's no mystery about the product.' Which takes us back to my initial question: How do you really stay ahead of the curve? '[By] keeping your ears and your eyes open with respect towards your clients and your possible clients, you stay relevant,' Philips affirms. Dior Backstage Rosy Glow Stick, DIOR, SHOP NOW. Following trends, though? Absolutely not. 'It's not about trying to create a trend or trying to be hype, because that's not up to us,' he adds. 'It's the people who use your products that will create a trend or make it hype. All we have to do is make sure that we deliver and give a good tool for them to check and they can experiment and have fun with it.' Well, if the last decade at Dior Makeup is anything to go on, Philips is continually on the money about what will deliver the next global success. In fact, after having a quick scroll, I see the Rosy Glow Stick is firmly on my feed. Diorshow spotlights the eyes with a collection that exude an electrifying, powerful allure

Always longed for eyes that steal the spotlight? The new Diorshow collection provides an entire wardrobe for the eyes, including the Diorshow Overvolume, a ready-to-wear formula that loads instantly and coats lashes in a deep black shade with a satin-matte finish using the high-performance brush. This new mascara successfully combines extreme volume and lash-by-lash definition, using a combination of soft waxes and emollients to create a malleable formula for buildable volume and curve from root to tip, that keeps lashes supple. Its formula includes D-Panthenol to help revitalise, coat and strengthen eyelashes, Abyssinian Oil to nourish the eyelashes, and cornflower water to comfort the application. Image courtesy of Dior. Featuring a deep black lashes and 24-hours no-transfer wear, the combination of structural and rigid waxes coat eyelashes to set curve and volume over time, gripping the lash while optimising curve and length. The brush houses a central reservoir that collects the mascara to deliver the right dose from the first sweep without clumping, and the bristles at the tip provide additional precision during makeup application. Creative and Image Director for Dior Makeup Peter Philips reinterprets the Diorshow 5 Couleurs palettes in four limited-edition colour harmonies to embellish and redefine the eyes. Soft yet highly pigmented variations across neutral shades gives you the ability to play with satin, matte or shimmering shades to easily create a bespoke eye look. Image courtesy of Dior. These colour harmonies include Silk Taupe with its blending beige tones interspersed with a hint of pale pink and a cool brown; Coral Couture with its soft, warm tones heightened by a hint of luminous coral; Rose Organza with its hot pinks combined with a subtle iridescent white; and Brown Cashmere with its nudes in warm brown shades offset by a dark brown. A must-have for makeup routines, the Diorshow Liquid Liner returns in a new formula with a new shimmer finish. Its waterproof formula incorporates an ink that emphasises the eyes with intense colour in the satin and pearl finishes, and a light veil of colour in the shimmer finish, for a 24-hours no-transfer result. Together with the fine and flexible high-precision felt tip, you'll be able to precisely draw fine or bold lines with no fuss. Image courtesy of Dior. In order to create looks that range from natural to bold, Peter Philips has created a wardrobe of 10 shades in three couture finishes: satin, pearl and shimmer, a new glitter finish. Two shades to look out for are the Shimmer Rose & Shimmer Mint which contain a subtle, light colour base that reveals radiant iridescence, and can be applied along the lower lash line or toward the inner corner of the eye to naturally catch the light in these areas to brighten the eyes.

King Charles' nephew Peter Philips continues to welcome NHS girlfriend Harriet Sperling into royal fold at Wimbledon

Peter Philips and his girlfriend Harriet Sperling put on an elegant display as they arrived at Wimbledon today. NHS nurse Harriet, 45, lovingly gazed at her partner as they posed for photographs before watching the live sporting action at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London. King Charles 's nephew and the son of Princess Anne, 47, has been dating Harriet for over a year, after splitting from his previous partner of three years, Lindsay Wallace. Harriet, who is related to the Duke of Gloucester through her late father, is the mother of one daughter, Georgina, born in 2012, from her previous marriage to private school-educated fitness instructor Antonio St John Sperling. Today, the duo, who will watch the match unfold from the Royal Box alongside Queen Camilla, appeared to be sweetly loved-up as they held their arms around each other for photographers on day ten of the championships. Harriet put on a summery display in a light blue dress and chunky tan wedges, while Peter looked equally sophisticated in a similar colour palette of navy and brown. Thanks to the UK's summer sunshine, the paediatric nurse specialist added a pair of black sunglasses to her ensemble. The mother-of-one has increasingly made her way into the royal fold in recent times, and last month attended Royal Ascot alongside King Charles and Queen Camilla. Following the Ascot procession, Harriet was seen in conversation with a very amused King Charles - indicating that she's been granted the royal sign of approval. Behind the scenes, Harriet is said to have commuted to London from her home in Gloucestershire for many years for her job in the NHS. In a piece written for Christian magazine Woman Alive last year, she admitted that she'd often found life as a single parent difficult, but found comfort after turning to her faith. Writing under her maiden name - Sanders - Harriet referred to comments comedian Katherine Ryan had made about parenting as a single mother to her daughter. She said: 'In the earlier years of my journey as a single mother to my daughter, resources were scarce, and the future was uncertain. Yet, in the absence of material security, I discovered the strength and life that comes from true selfless love. A love that is able to be solely devoted to your child. 'My daughter and I journeyed 10 years with only each other. I liken us to an island and it has often felt hard to imagine anyone joining that island. 'But of course beauty comes from relationships, relationship with our maker and relationship with each other. It is often tough parenting alone but although there is a stigma to endure, God is able to step in and turn it for good.' Harriet trained as a nurse in London where, by her own admission, she was something of a 'party girl', going to nightclubs and spending her summers in Ibiza. 'My faith was always in me, but it was kind of dormant,' she revealed in an interview in 2009. 'Somehow it didn't seem relevant to my life in London. But the end of a seven-year relationship was the turning point for me. I went to church as I felt there was something missing.' According to an online bio, Peter's girlfriend Harriet lives in Gloucestershire and works as a Paediatric Nurse Specialist for the NHS. She is 'passionate about early brain development in babies and seeing children thrive,' the bio notes. In 2010, Harriet was a key member of a team of medics, doctors and clinicians who helped save the life of a critically ill baby, named Phineas, after he was struck down by a deadly virus aged just three weeks. Like her boyfriend Peter (Princess Anne's son and the late Queen's first and favourite grandson), Harriet also boasts connections of a very high status. The Mail revealed last month that her late father Rupert was the 'only son of Mr and Mrs Geoffrey Sanders, of Buckhorn House, Bisley, Gloucestershire'. Rupert, who died in 2023, was a well-known solicitor who ran his own firm in the Cotswold town of Cirencester. Pictured: Peter Phillips and Harriet Sperling pose for photographers as they arrive for day ten at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships in London His father Geoffrey, Harriet's late grandfather, served during the Second World War with the Royal Artillery and was a D-Day veteran – reaching the rank of major, going on to become High Sheriff of Gloucestershire and a long-standing church warden, as well as editor of the Stroud News and Journal for 20 years. Harriet's paternal grandmother Eleanor was the daughter of Dorothy Courage, of the Courage brewing dynasty. Dorothy's brother Raymond was Lord of the Manor of Edgcote, in Northamptonshire – an 18th century estate, once owned by Anne of Cleves (wife of Henry VIII). Harriet herself attended Dean Close School, a Christian boarding and day school, in Cheltenham. Last week, the mother-of-one appeared very much to have been granted the royal seal of approval as she joined senior royals in the traditional carriage procession arriving at Royal Ascot. She appeared to be getting on swimmingly with the royals, chatting with Princess Anne on the balcony, while Peter's sister Zara Tindall was at one point seen helping out by fixing her hat. Attending once again later that week, she and Peter held hands and exchanged a kiss. At £3,720, Harriet's dashing Ascot outfit was certainly fit for mingling with high society. Her heels were by Emmy London, a brand worn by the Princess of Wales, and the £395 clutch was from the same brand; the hat was a £945 number by Awon Golding Millinery, a brand once sported by Meghan Markle. Meanwhile, her balloon-sleeved jacket and midi skirt were by designer Suzannah London, a label favoured by Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh and by Catherine, Princess of Wales. She and Peter revealed their relationship last May when they were seen strolling hand-in-hand at Badminton Horse Trials in Gloucestershire. Last year, the couple packed on the PDA before meeting with the King and Queen, embarking on their new romance just weeks after his split from Lindsay, after reportedly meeting at a sports event. The smitten pair have since attended an array of high society events together, including Wimbledon and the Badminton Horse Trials - as well as Cheltenham Races in January. Peter himself has two daughters - Savannah, 14, and Isla, 13, from his previous 12-year marriage to Autumn Kelly. Princess Anne rejected royal titles for her two children, meaning neither Peter nor Zara are 'working royals'. After his split from Autumn Kelly in 2020, Peter had a three-year relationship with Scottish divorcee Lindsay Wallace. As for the future of Peter and Harriet's relationship, rumours are already flying. The late Queen Elizabeth didn't include girlfriends in the Ascot procession unless they were engaged, so Harriet's presence has been viewed as something of an endorsement by the King. As to whether there might be any announcements brewing between the nurse and the 18th in line to the throne, Harriet's mother Mary Sanders said in an interview with the Mail last month: 'Well, it's not something I know anything about.' She added: 'I don't think there's much I can say apart from we have four children and she's my middle daughter. She's lovely. I'm very proud of her and she is very special.'

'Blush blindness'? Do your thing, says Dior Beauty pro Peter Philips

'Blush blindness' is a beauty term that's been trending for a while on TikTok and Instagram. Article content The New York Times defined the beauty affliction as 'not being able to tell, empirically, how rosy is too rosy.' Thrown around as both a criticism and a beauty trend term, the idea behind 'blush blindness' is that the wearer boldly wears the makeup product. Perhaps, sometimes, too boldly. Article content Pop star Sabrina Carpenter is a celebrity name that's become attached to the trend, as fans point out that her preference for adding extra blush to her look appears to have grown. Whether it's a liquid, balm or powder formulation, 'blush blindness' can apply to both the amount applied, hue and pigmentation of a product. Article content Article content View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sabrina Carpenter (@sabrinacarpenter) Article content But Peter Philips, celebrity makeup artist and the creative and image director of Christian Dior Beauty, says if you are a big fan of going big on blush — well then, you go ahead wear it. Article content Article content The longtime makeup pro says that wearing too much makeup of any kind can be a delicate balance, but one that only you can perfect. Article content 'It's very difficult to give tips now, in general, because there is no 'in general',' Philips says. 'Every face is different.' And not every makeup fan, he notes, wants to look the same as everyone else. Philips points to a young colleague on his Dior Backstage Beauty team who 'loves' blush, opting to add the cheek tint with a 'full-on' application approach. Article content 'She wears it so confidently. And so, I'm not judging her,' notes Philips, speaking during a virtual call with international media. 'I mean, she feels good. She feels great … Article content 'Maybe in five years time, she will see a picture of herself and say, 'Oh, my god. What was I thinking?' I have pictures of me when I was a teenager going out, and I felt fantastic. And then I was like, 'Oh my god, what was I thinking?'' Article content Article content As is often the case with younger generations exploring makeup products, they play with particular product categories with the aim of making them feel new. Blush has become a main medium of play, and they're using it as more than just a pop of colour on the cheeks. Article content Article content 'Now, for younger kids, blush blends into fashion, almost,' Philips says. 'They go really high with a bit of blush and it combines almost with the eyeshadow.' Article content While Philips admits he'd step in to offer some tips for blending or a better shade suggestion if he felt someone's 'blush blindness' had truly gone a bit too far, he'd be hesitant to hinder someone's sense of play or creativity with their own beauty look. Article content 'It's just fun, you know?' Philips says. 'You can be playful and creative with new makeup at any age.' Article content Perhaps in an effort to promote that play, while also offering wearable, blendable shades that play down the possibility of a 'blush blindness' snafu, Philips and the Dior Beauty team have created a new collection of blush sticks just in time for the easy-breezy beauty days of summer.
